The best flavour of jam

MrsHathaway · 06/02/2018 19:45

Shop:

  1. Blackcurrant
  2. Seedless raspberry
  3. Strawberry

Homemade:

  1. Damson
  2. Gooseberry
  3. Strawberry

DC contend that strawberry tops both lists Hmm

Clearly I am NBU. Strawberry jam is good jam but definitely not best.

Homemade: Rhubarb and ginger, gooseberry and elderflower, blackcurrant.

Shop bought: blackcurrent, raspberry, cherry.

Two votes for blackcurrent. I love blackcurrents.

Strawberry jam is the work of the devil. All strawberries should only be used for making proper homemade custard based icecream.

Jam is not to be trusted. It gets in your hair, it makes everything sticky and it's awful stuff.

Butter is all you need. Lovely, lovely butter.

TroysMammy · 06/02/2018 20:32

Marmalade is generally a jam made with citrus fruits.

I don't buy jam as I make my own. One particular favourite was melon and star anise. Kiwi is nice but not worth the effort as you have to peel and de-seed the fruit.

Dahlietta · 06/02/2018 20:37

Fig jam is divine, but it's not very versatile - you can definitely only eat it on white bread. I did have it on a muffin once actually and that was okay, but still basically white dough.
In terms of 'if I could only have one all-purpose jam in my life': raspberry, with bits of course. The person above who advocates bit-free raspberry jam is presumably a toddler.

We're not talking about sex, here, WhooooAmI24601! (Are we...?)

ToadOfSadness · 06/02/2018 20:39

Blackcurrant always
Lemon - there is a lemon one made in France, a conserve not a marmalade
Apricot
Raspberry but conserve not actual jam and then only used in semolina pudding due to pips.

Sgtmajormummy · 06/02/2018 20:39

Troysmammy The only time I made kiwi jam (just peeled and roughly chopped) has gone down in family history, and not in a good way.

I think it ended up as a novelty Hallowe’en slime green jam tart!

Stringofpearls · 06/02/2018 20:39

Blackberry
Raspberry
Blackcurrant

Ochre37 · 06/02/2018 20:40

Apricot Jam at home on thick granary toast or croissants

Strawberry jam for cakes (obvs)

Blackcurrant jam when in hotel in little pots

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 06/02/2018 20:40

Cherry
Rhubarb
Apricot

Strawberry is OK but only the heavy fruit stuff, not the seedless.

Pull your hair back. Done. Unless you're my DC3 and rub toast on your head for fun. 28 years old he was.

And Hmm at being called a toddler for preferring no seeds in my raspberry jam. I ain't the one getting it all over myself, for a start.

Definitely damson - home made or shop bought, I don't care Grin

MrsHathaway · 06/02/2018 20:45

For scones, proper lumps are better. In sandwiches (bread or cake) smooth is more convenient.

Last spring we stayed at a fantastic AirBnB on a fruit farm in the Highlands. There was bread in the bread bin when we arrived, milk in the fridge, fresh scones on the table and a jar of fresh strawberry jam. The first berries of the season. Fifty feet from the tunnels.

Oh my.

Very bitter marmalade. Grin

Oops, sorry, MrsHathaway, didn't realise it was you who didn't like the pips and I called you a toddler on your own thread Blush.
It's not me who gets jam in my hair though - I was quoting someone else! As I said, I don't think that poster is talking about just eating jam on toast... Wink

Dahlietta · 06/02/2018 20:46

(You're still wrong about the pips though....)

lampygirl · 06/02/2018 20:46

Strawberry and rhubarb (mixed, not 2 flavours) is the best. Is strawberry flavoured but less sickly sweet

Indie139 · 06/02/2018 20:46

Strawberry

MrsHathaway · 06/02/2018 20:46

Ha ha it's ok Grin

Jam is definitely not an upstairs food.

OP posts:
Dahlietta · 06/02/2018 20:47

We're agreed on that then, MrsH! Grin

meredintofpandiculation · 06/02/2018 20:51

Mulberry
Morello cherry with actual cherries in it.
Fig

Strawberry jam is nice, but only if it's got big lumps of strawberry in it.

Becles · 06/02/2018 20:51

Damson
Greengage
Cherry

Properly bitter thick cut seville marmalade

I'm having toast tomorrow after this.

TriJo · 06/02/2018 20:53

Strawberry or GTFO.

Fekko · 06/02/2018 20:54

Apricot or raspberry.
