Adult males can now shower with girls at swimming pools

Swim England has issued new guidance about trans swimmers - link here. Some of it is sensible- I'm sure trans people can feel self-conscious swimming, so trans-only sessions are a good idea (though of course trans people should be able to use the pool at other times too).

What's disturbing though is the section on Environment, which says that trans people should use whichever changing room they prefer. 85% of men who identify as trans have had no surgery, so this means adult men showering & changing with women and girls. How can this be allowed under child safeguarding rules? And what about all the women who will feel unable to swim if they have to change with men - or whose religion does not allow them to do so?

AIBU to think that everyone's needs & comfort should have been considered?

Puzzled they're usually for all women, though may be mostly used by Muslim women. Though I believe groups can hire the whole pool for private use, which could be a way round this for Muslim women. Obviously it would depend on the cost. My local pool rents out to swimming clubs and closes to the public during those times.

Adrifty86 · 06/02/2018 15:49

We don't have mixed changing rooms here.

Only two pools within reasonable distance, both with relatively small women's changing rooms and only one or two cubicles. Most women end up getting changed out in the open or you would be waiting for hours in a queue.

Are you telling me that now any man can walk in there, get changed with his dick waggling around in the open and we just have to put up with it?

Both pools have a history with certain men that use their facilities harassing female members (one is a gym). And now those men can walk in whenever they like.

What a fucking brilliant idea.

Guess that's no more swimming for me or my daughters then (or my friend whose faith would definitely mean she couldn't come anymore)

OvaHere · 06/02/2018 15:54

Yes Adrifty the mixed changing villages really aren't as widespread as people think once you get out of larger towns and cities and pretty much none existent for smaller gyms.

noeffingidea · 06/02/2018 15:56

I do actually think that women who can't cope with seeing a willy are a bit silly
I've seen thousands of 'willys', (I was a nurse, mainly on a male ward) they don't bother me at all, but I still wouldn't use a communal changing room under these conditions. Thats because I'm not going to change or get naked in front of a man, other than a sexual partner or an HCP. And nor will I allow my daughter to.

BarbarianMum · 06/02/2018 16:05

Spot on. After all, what harm could a willy possibly do? Hmm

I actually can't believe anyone could type something so stupid. Did I miss the irony?

BrendasUmbrella · 06/02/2018 16:11

Though doubtless a certain kind of trans activist will target those too ...

I would expect that. Like the men who say they are desperate to take part in women-only marathons. Do they regularly run marathons? No, never done it. Or the men who threw tantrums at a women-only screening of Wonder Woman. A man sued the cinema for infringing upon his civil rights to see the film in that particular cinema at that exact time and date. MRAs will keep popping up like bacteria until they have everything their own way.

Blutacismynemesis · 06/02/2018 16:19

I don't think anyone has an issue with seeing a "willy" where there's a genuine reason and no ulterior motives (e.g. in healthcare, an accidental flash changing on a beach, or consensual sex).

But this is leaving a door wide open to the types of men who get their kicks specifically by getting their junk out in front of non-consenting women and children, because they enjoy the reaction. Bad enough if you meet them in the street (and I have more than once, as a teenager), but at least there it's easier to get away from than when you're half-naked in a confined space.

PidgeonPodge · 06/02/2018 16:21

Then you must have lived a lovely life. There are many, many reasons why that would be unacceptable to some women. I simply don't believe you can't imagine what any of those would be.

I would not enter any women's changing rooms before my op. I still wouldn't enter some of the ones described above (small, no cubicles) because I'm a considerate human being. I choose multisex changing rooms with many private cubicles.

Having been the victim of sexual assault myself I am also well aware of the panic and terror involved with being in proximity to a strange man, it matters not what his intentions are (because sadly for many it has been demonstrated that a fair many have very bad intentions)

No woman should be forced to share a changing room with a man (i.e. anyone with a penis is a man = it's fucking insane that that needs clarification these days)

These aren't transsexuals that are being 'allowed' in (I think many are thinking of it like that in their head)

It is the AGP's, the sexual predators, the cross dressers who will be aroused by being in the women's changing rooms.

They will be the ones getting access to vulnerable women through this policy. And they are the ONLY ones this policy (and all the other fucking madness) will benefit)

Justabunchofcunts · 06/02/2018 16:25

Thank you for posting that Pidgeon. I am sorry that all this mess is affecting you too.

ALittleBitOfButter · 06/02/2018 16:29

The first time I saw an erect penis I was 11 and walked into a female toilets in the park next to my school. A man, wearing red French knickers, stockings and a bra was sat in the end cubicle masturbating. The police told my mother that men did this frequently and I shouldn't have been allowed in the toilet

Something everyone knows except libfems...

BiologyMatters · 06/02/2018 16:33

The world has gone mad. If i saw a man in the women's changing rooms at my pool, i wouldn't go back. In a unisex family changing room you expect to see men and there are unwritten codes of conduct. In a female changing room you expect women and young children. No adult dicks.

PidgeonPodge · 06/02/2018 16:33

It is monumentally shit, I'm essentially being used as a stepping stone for sexual perverts and misogynists to get their own way.

It's affecting/ will affect the women I know and love a lot more than me sadly Justabunchofcunts

BiologyMatters · 06/02/2018 16:37

Everyone's falling over themselves to validate these men as well. Oh dear must consider their feelings. What about the feelings of the mother with her young child who doesnt want to go into a changing room to see a fucking adult penis? or the 12 year old girl, or the woman who has been raped, or the elderly muslim woman, or every other female?

These men do not matter more than the women whose facility it is. If the male changing room is dangerous for TIMs then go and lobby them about it. Men do not become less dangerous to women because they say theyre trans.

UnimaginativeUsername · 06/02/2018 16:40

What on earth? What kind of local authority allows this, where is it??? They really need to stop that from happening. Nobody can shower naked at the place I go for a swim. There are signs prohibiting it.

Why would they need to stop it. A few naked women in their 60s in the female showers isn’t hurting anyone.

UnimaginativeUsername · 06/02/2018 16:41

IME it’s usually older women, who must be more confident in their bodies than me. Good on them.

Rebeccaslicker · 06/02/2018 16:42

Hands up who would feel comfortable being naked, bending over, putting on a bra and making sure it's properly in place, next to one of these women?

Who would want their young daughter doing the same?

genuine trans people who've lived as women for years and had ops/hormones are a world apart from men who just have "lady feelz" (or claim to).

I will not go to a public pool that adopts this. I and many other women. No more swimming for us.

No swimming for our daughters either. Our lives will be restricted, to appease these men.

Doesn’t this just give licence to men to do the same though? And if there were naked men in there, would you have the same attitude?

Rebeccaslicker · 06/02/2018 16:54

Lefkosia - which may well be what they want. Less competition for the straight men, whose validation and attention it is that they really really want!

UnimaginativeUsername · 06/02/2018 16:56

I never said it gave men license to do anything. It’s the female showers in the female changing rooms.

Presumably men can shower naked in the men’s if they want to. I don’t know, as I’ve never been in the men’s (or asked about it).

jay55 · 06/02/2018 17:03

How on earth does this help with trying to keep girls involved in sports?

Apologies, I thought you meant that it was a mixed sex communal shower Wink
Why should what they are doing be banned? That would be stupid Smile

Nickynackynoodle · 06/02/2018 17:22

I wonder if swim England has a gender pay gap and if so, why their female employees haven’t just identified out of it. I mean, they clearly think it’s a thing so they should put their money where their mouth is.

headinhands · 06/02/2018 17:29

Our local swimming pool is mixed changing/showering, just like centerparcs.
