Just watched the clip of Jacob rees mogg at Bristol university, when a few momentum activists try to cause havoc and stop him from talking

Whatever anyone thinks of this man, I have to say he was pretty gutsy going up to them, considering they are all hiding behind Balaclavas and scarves and there wasn't any security there.
Most politicians wouldn't have gone near them, let alone try to talk to them

I like him. Yes his views are controversial and I don't agree with some of them, but at least he stands up for what he believes in

@Eltonjohnssyrup

Is she? Think how much more of a dullard she'd be without that input. I guess appearances matter and she appears to be incompetent and idiotic.

@lostincumbria

Your assumption that he gets preferential treatment because of his race or sex. Is that not clear?

Your premise was entirely lacking anyway as he is by no means "untouchable". Do you not read the papers or watch the news? Do you think he has never been criticised? The line in The Times is "Tory poll fears over role of 'toxic' Boris Johnson".

What's your basis for him being untouchable or do you have a chip on your shoulder about wealthy white men?

LongWeek · 03/02/2018 09:57

Someone commented up thread that MPs have had 'a number' of threats against them.

I think people should consider that nearly all MPs have regular death threats. There is a reason why MPs automatically get new locks & panic buttons and police linked burglar alarms ( for their homes) paid by the tax payer when they become MPs.
MPs get threats against them, against their families.

Whatever you think of JRM politics, he walked up to masked people to try and talk to them, knowing that any of them could have been armed, and wanting to kill him.

MPs are advised to always be aware of exits to rooms, to think about where they would go if armed people attacked them.
They are told to advise local police if holding big meetings in case it get nasty.
For surgerys they have no security - the advice is 'keep a table between you and the other person'

I'm married to an MP. No matter which party, MPs are under threat all the time.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 03/02/2018 09:57

Good job those white Bullingdon boys don't ever make mistakes (ill, exhausted or otherwise).

Teresa May is a grammar school girl. The cabinet only has one former Bullingdon boy. I believe you may need a time machine to go back to 2015.

cuttingcarbonemissions · 03/02/2018 09:57

Diane Abbot went to a grammar school and Cambridge - so not poorly educated by any stretch of the imagination. Very similar to Margaret Thatcher.
Her performance as shadow minister has been poor (C-) with occasional flashes of complete incompetence which have been attributed to Type 2 diabetes.
But she is not the only mediocre minister/shadow minister we have. She attracts a disproportionate amount of vitriol purely because she is a black woman who does not look like Naomi Campbell.

lostincumbria · 03/02/2018 09:59

The protesters were ridiculous in what they did, they undermine their arguments. But it appears to have been the tories who used violence. Good on ReesMogg for defending the woman being attacked, if that is what he was doing.

Why isn't Guido attempting to identify the thug in the white shirt?

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 03/02/2018 10:00

with occasional flashes of complete incompetence which have been attributed to Type 2 diabetes.

Right so if all her cock ups are going to be attributed to diabetes I'm guessing you are ok for May to do the same with hers then?

lostincumbria · 03/02/2018 10:02

Nice work nextday. You got me.

Pity I'm a white man in his 50s earning more than double the national wage.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 03/02/2018 10:02

She attracts a disproportionate amount of vitriol purely because she is a black woman who does not look like Naomi Campbell.

I would say it's because she is extremely high profile, courts publicity then massively fucks up. As another poster said BJ gets just as much shit when he fucks up, there were concerted campaigns against Hunt and Gove. May has been targeted because of her diabetes. And I really can't remember any politician making such basic fuck ups in maths repeatedly. Yet Abbott is supposed to be handed a free pass because she's black. That seems a little racist in itself to me, that we should have lower expectations for her and give her an easy ride because of her colour.

It's interesting May's response to talk about her diabetes was to rebut it. She didn't claim it was sexist and try to hide behind that.

ButteredScone · 03/02/2018 10:03

The thing Jacob Rees Mogg, Diane Abbot and Jo Cox have in common is a respect for the democratic process and a willingness to engage in peaceful debate. This is so important. An exchange of ideas requires a difference of opinion and JRM is totally willing to listen and discuss.

For that reason, I have complete respect for him and for Diane Abbot. Respect is not the same as agreement.

However, these far-left thugs, who think they are entitled to violence, is absolutely chilling. Jeremy terrorists-are-justified Corbyn has given courage and succour to this. It’s awful. I hope the moderate Labour members are able to take back the reins soon.

BadLad · 03/02/2018 10:03

I see that make is unable to say the actions at that event were wrong.

There's still plenty of whataboutery to go yet. We've only had what about Abbott, Mosley and Hitler so far - you can't expect any concession of the point this early.

C8H10N4O2 · 03/02/2018 10:03

Yes, it's kind of expected. That's the job you know? Every cabinet level politician does it

No they don't. The whole team shares the load in campaigns, the leader taking front position. Unless for some reason the leader is deemed a vote loser. Abbott's schedule during that campaign was so ridiculous there were cartoons about her doing every single interview whilst others were invisible.

The world carries on happening even if a politician is sick. If their health doesn't allow them to fulfil the position they should step down

As you point out, May also has diabetes - diabetes does not stop you working. It is, like many conditions, one where a change can take a few days to recognise. She did step down from campaigning when it became a problem.

People were so quick to jump on the "stupid Abbott" bandwagon that this went unacknowledged and the "stupid" comments continued (as they do here) in the same press who were supportive to May.

Incidentally some of the worst comments I heard about May and diabetes came from her own side and had more to do with misogyny. Something else she and Abbott have in common.

Squeegle · 03/02/2018 10:03

All our MPs deserve our respect for the work they do. I guess a few of them have really invited criticism for various rather corrupt actions . But in general they are a hardworking lot (even those we don’t like). And frankly it’s up to us as a nation to become more engaged and speak to them more and make sure they really are representing our views. I have never contacted my MP and then I am happy to complain if she doesn’t do the things I think are important!

Eltonjohnssyrup · 03/02/2018 10:06

Pity I'm a white man in his 50s earning more than double the national wage.

So a typical middle class Labour voter? No wonder the average wage of a Tory voter has dipped under those of Labour. It's just a middle class protest group which has completely lost touch with the working class. They actually deselected a candidate with impeccable connections near me for being 'too working class' for Labour.

And it's amazing how many middle aged men like you and makeourfuture come on MN to lecture the little women about how we should all be good Corbyn bots. Anybody would think the stories about Labour's macho sexist culture were true...

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 03/02/2018 10:06

It is, like many conditions, one where a change can take a few days to recognise

Her mess ups went on for weeks.

Abbott's schedule during that campaign was so ridiculous there were cartoons about her doing every single interview whilst others were invisible.

Well then blame her mate Corbyn then for agreeing to her doing them.

cuttingcarbonemissions · 03/02/2018 10:06

@Piglet

I am not a Diane Abbot fan, far from it. But I would be sympathetic to any politician or indeed anyone else suffering from an illness which occasionally impacted on their performance. If it happened regularly, I would question how well they were managing it and in some cases I would expect them to stand down. I dont think DA is in this category.

She is mediocre. But so are half the members of the Cabinet and shadow cabinet. The talent pool is pretty limited.

But the main point is that the only reason she attracts so much vitriol is that she is a confident black woman who is not beautiful. That is racism in action.

makeourfuture · 03/02/2018 10:06

I believe the police should investigate this and see if any laws were broken. From the limited view of these videos, I would say that battery could have occured.

Aside from suspect Guido Fawkes gossip I have seen no reports linking these people with any particular group.

nextDayDelivery · 03/02/2018 10:06

@lostincumbria

What does your race or sex have to do with anything?

I do like the way you think £14.40 p/h (if you meant minimum wage) or £54k = wealthy. That's cute.

BWatchWatcher · 03/02/2018 10:07

Does anyone else feel like they are being played by this video footage?
Poor wee Jacob RM and the nasty Labourites.
This smacks of a setup.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 03/02/2018 10:08

People were so quick to jump on the "stupid Abbott" bandwagon that this went unacknowledged and the "stupid" comments continued (as they do here) in the same press who were supportive to May.

But May hasn't had her health problems interfere with her work has she? Abbott has, which is why the press are not supportive of her. And she stepped down from campaigning when it became clear she was a liability.

woodhill · 03/02/2018 10:09

Don't agree with some of the things he voted against but it's a mixed bag and I agree with some of the things he voted for

Oh give it a rest. The left wing links of the protesters have already been established. BTW, Asda has a two for one offer on tinfoil this week if you're thinking of replacing your hat.

LifeBeginsAtGin · 03/02/2018 10:10

JRM is one man who is quietly carrying out his role as a Member of Parliament.

Momentum are an organisation of thugs.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 03/02/2018 10:11

Poor wee Jacob RM and the nasty Labourites.
This smacks of a setup.

Why? Because those on the left can't possibly be nasty?

MorrisZapp · 03/02/2018 10:12

I'm a hardcore, pro choice terf. So obviously my views don't align with this Mogg guy.

But I'm interested in the religious aspect. How do British Muslims feel about same sex marriage, sex outside marriage, contraception and abortion?

Feelitstill · 03/02/2018 10:12

I agree that a lot of the attacks on Diane Abbott are based on her looks, which is terrible. But then Anne Widdecombe suffered the same abuse. It’s more about being an unattractive woman than being rubbish at your job. Sadly.
