Just watched the clip of Jacob rees mogg at Bristol university, when a few momentum activists try to cause havoc and stop him from talking

Whatever anyone thinks of this man, I have to say he was pretty gutsy going up to them, considering they are all hiding behind Balaclavas and scarves and there wasn't any security there.
Most politicians wouldn't have gone near them, let alone try to talk to them

I like him. Yes his views are controversial and I don't agree with some of them, but at least he stands up for what he believes in

I got that. Grin

makeourfuture · 05/02/2018 09:14

when Brexit becomes unworkable there will be no riots just more shouty folk in the press and radio phone ins playing the blame game.

And sick people with no care quietly expiring out of view.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 05/02/2018 09:56

Right, so the issue is somebody was shouty

No the issue is idiots that were cowardly and hid their faces thought it was a good idea to break into a meeting.

BertrandRussell · 05/02/2018 09:58

"No the issue is idiots that were cowardly and hid their faces thought it was a good idea to break into a meeting."
Which nobody thinks is acceptable.

Terftastic · 05/02/2018 09:58

Perhaps it is true that Mogg is a better debater. He may have a very wide public school vocabulary, and the confidence of wealth and privilege to remain calm. The armour of the well-cut suit and club tie.

But have these shouty people ever cut off a sick person's assistance?

Well this is so very true. The "better" debater isn't always right, or good - and JRM is an old Eton boy, where debating is just a sport, a game. Easy to win when you how.

Rebeccaslicker · 05/02/2018 12:04

Have the shouty people ever PAID for a sick person's assistance? Last time I checked, angst-ridden students didn't pay a whole lot of tax!

BertrandRussell · 05/02/2018 12:10

There seems to be growing confusion about who is who in this issue.....

There is certainly a difference between legitimate protest and heckling and this sort of balaclava wearing disruption. Even though this particular incident seems pretty minor, it shouldn't be tolerated.

Mind you, I might find it a bit difficult to resist heckling someone who does not believe in abortion for women who have been raped. Even though I know it would be pointless-he would remain unflappable.

computationalAspects · 05/02/2018 13:02

"Mind you, I might find it a bit difficult to resist heckling someone who does not believe in abortion for women who have been raped. Even though I know it would be pointless-he would remain unflappable."

But heckling is for people who don't have the ability to have a reasoned argument or debate.

He has his stance and has made it public and his reasons for his stance. What would heckling do other than make you look churlish and an opponent to free speech.

Interrupting an invited speaker with abuse because they disagree with you only makes you look like a twat. Not them.

The other thing about hecklers is even though they might be clever or witty or intelligent, they sound like a drunk shouting quotes from the Pogues because they're usually in the back of the crowd, they don't have a microphone, they rush to get out their words because people speak over them and therefore they can't put their point across. They do their opinion a disservice.

BertrandRussell · 05/02/2018 13:20

I’m not saying I would be right or sensible to heckle- just that I might find it hard to resist.

People with very little power get frustrated.

Terftastic · 05/02/2018 14:01

Probably not (although it depends how old they are, and whether they've worked beforehand) - but they will presumably go on to spend a lifetime earning. That's the idea of being a student.

Although you'll probably argue that lefties spend their lives on benefits, and become the great unwashed... but certainly my DH spent his student years protesting the Poll Tax and is now in his 40's and a six-figure earner. So he's paid a fair bit of tax.

Good afternoon, finally had some sleep.
But I thought I would say goodbye, enjoyed talking to faith and some others. Good luck faith, I really hope things improve for you & your kids. I may not agree with your politics, but I am willing to agree yours are honestly held and you have the right to hold them, I may not share them up I believe you have the right to hold them. Good Luck.
I really think I am leaving now, don't think it is good for me, once again I am picked up on one sentence about revolution and told I know nothing, it was a throw away comment, meant as a joke. Piglet I was explaining why I became a soft left liberal, many on here did and do have middle/wealthy backgrounds, and told I know fuck all about the county I was born in and apart from 10 years I have lived all my 48 years.
BUT you all ignore my 23:39 post of yesterday, so can I repeat it but I will Bold it, I have told 25 friends and colleagues this story yesterday afternoon at rugby and today at work and everyone has cried, but you ladies don't seem to care, so here it is again.
Family friends introduced us to their new granddaughter today, she is 8. she is adopted, and her back story mad us cry. Anyway the girl asked for a biscuit, we gave her a packet of chocolate wafers. She took one, eat a bit and looked around, took another, then another and then another. When no one said anything, she put the extra three in her 3 pockets. When her granny ask why, she said no one ever gives me Biscuits, and I don't know when I will eat again. It was all true, she nearly died of starvation, when found.
That is Britain today, food banks, kids starving, disabled people committing suicide due to illegal PIP cuts. All in the name of this governments (TORY I remind you) cuts.
But it's people like with my left of centre beliefs and hopes foe a better Britain for the likes of the above girl, who are evil and out of touch with average man Well I say thank god I am am. Hilter was supported by 89% of Germany, I know which % I would respect.
You carry on arguing about whether a group of Idiots in hoods or a man with dubious morals are worse. Whilst many of us watch our home country fall apart around us. Must be nice to be either a momentum or tory supporter, no worries about how you both are fucking up BRITAIN.
I actually feel sorry for all of you. but no I don't because I feel really sorry for the little girl, who now owns a new teddy, given to her my a 6ft 3in rugby playing son, who was heartbroken she had no teddy at 8 and he had 7 lying around his 17 years old bedroom.
I find Britain/mumsnet more horrifying by the day.

I will lurk, but I doubt this girl's story will make any difference. I am off back to education, where I started my mumsnet posting, AIBU is too heart breaking and scary.
A saddened dad of 2, and slightly soft left leaning fool

The feeling is mutual user - good wishes to you also Smile

People with little power get frustrated Grin

You don't say! Tony Blair brought it home how little power people have. He rode rough shod over a nation, surpressed free speach and then folks. Thosefrustrated people voted for brexit.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 05/02/2018 17:00

Don't be put off posting btw user - with no competing views, how does anyone get exposure to life outside their own bubble?

I may have disagreed with some of what you said, but not all - and I respect your tenacity in responding to me!
(I'm far more easy to talk to & debate with in person than online, honest! Words on a screen can't convey tone & can often be misinterpreted)

Eltonjohnssyrup · 05/02/2018 17:07

user, you do realise children aren't adopted because they are poor. They are adopted because they would be in danger remaining with their natural parents. An adopted child saying that is unlikely to be saying it because her parents couldn't afford to feed her, but because they simply couldn't be bothered.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 05/02/2018 17:07

Ditto the teddy.

Dapplegrey · 05/02/2018 17:31

User147, well in fairness if you post opinions such as your revolution comment (revolution is quite a drastic solution) then surely it's fair enough for posters to comment on them.
I didn't tell you you knew nothing - I said there may well be a revolution but it may bring more problems than it solves.
Anyway, I enjoy reading your posts so keep 'em coming.

Now that nice Cameron man, he was always cheerful and clever.

Jacob Rees-Mogg’s scuffle ‘bodyguard’ exposed partying in Nazi uniform

GhostofFrankGrimes

I was waiting for you or make to post that, at least you waited for someone else to pick up it up other than Skwakbox

I think it shows how far politics has become, as this is, it seems we’re digging up “dirt” on random citizens that step out of line now?

Do you really think anything at all can be inferred from this?

GhostofFrankGrimes · 05/02/2018 18:12

care to address the incident that this thread is about rather than trying to deflect?

makeourfuture · 05/02/2018 18:16

Is that the guy that hit the woman?

GhostofFrankGrimes · 05/02/2018 18:16

If the article is correct I think it was very concerning. The public have a right to know what their elected reprentatives get up to and the company they keep.

More importantly for the sake of this thread it offers the other side of the story. Hecklers on the one side and on the other an allegation of a man striking a woman.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 05/02/2018 18:16

One thing that's been bugging me which I couldn't quite put my finger on has just come to me - the whole thing about the vulnerable & people with little power being frustrated & thrown under a bus.
Yes, I agree with that - but it's therefore incumbent on others to be their voice.

What's rankling with me is that people like the masked up heckler twats are the very people who could have been their voice but they actively chose not to.

For example, Josh Connor (shouty twat) is from a middle class family & lived a comfortable life prior to uni - he's already a graduate, so presumably skilled in critical thought & well able to articulate a coherent argument.

He was given an opportunity to directly question & tackle JRM on a one to one basis - as were the rest of the twat-crew (also graduates? I don't know).

Anyway, I think it's this that winds me up more than anything - middle class, educated people that don't use their privilege in a positive way but would rather behave like dicks.
(I've the same disdain for upper class twats too, so don't worry!)

I always get pulp's 'common people' as an ear worm in these situations...!
