Just watched the clip of Jacob rees mogg at Bristol university, when a few momentum activists try to cause havoc and stop him from talking

Whatever anyone thinks of this man, I have to say he was pretty gutsy going up to them, considering they are all hiding behind Balaclavas and scarves and there wasn't any security there.
Most politicians wouldn't have gone near them, let alone try to talk to them

I like him. Yes his views are controversial and I don't agree with some of them, but at least he stands up for what he believes in

As I have already said condemning is easy. Stopping poisonous views and division takes courage.

So you're advocating political violence within the very wooly term of poisonous views, ironic considering your stance on anti neoliberalism and yet being a remainer... but i doubt you see the irony, it really is just nothing more than a team sport to you.

Justanotherlurker · 04/02/2018 21:08

I don't understand why some people here seem so disgusted about politics taking a step to the left, many are calling for centrist or moderate policies but that would require movement to the left as well.

Again, I think this says more about you than anyone else.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 04/02/2018 21:09

As I have already said condemning is easy. Stopping poisonous views and division takes courage.

But who is defining 'poisonous views'. As far as I can see 'poisonous views' in your opinion are views which you don't like. They are not universally viewed as 'poisonous views'.

So what you're actually saying is that you approve of the suppresion of opinions you don't like. This puts you in a bracket with Pol Pot, the Stasi, the blackshirts and Hitler, Robert Mugabe, Stalin, Kim Jong Un and McCarthy. Congratulations.

While we're at it, I view those who seek to silence their political opponents as those who hold 'poisonous views'. If I came round and trashed your house and smashed up your computer so you couldn't post would you be applauding my courage?

GhostofFrankGrimes · 04/02/2018 21:10

I suspect that you're flailing around trying to find some sort of right wing equivalent and failing because we don't have a regular and pervasive culture of right wing mobs threatening and trying to shut down left wing political discussion.

What would you call the likes of the "enemies of the people" headline if it was not to shut down debate? The right need some self awareness. In actual fact it is the right desperately flailing around with any old attempt to vilify "the left".

user1471450935 · 04/02/2018 21:13

Elton
I would say I am a left leaning Liberal, probably more SDP than proper liberal. But you won't apologise about your rudeness over Yorkshire.
You show your right wing ignorance too, because our school and 5 other secondary's which have gone into special measures are in Graham Stuarts (Tory MP for Beverley and Holderness) control. But unlike the Hull Labour MPs who come and apologise and try, Mr Stuart has said a fucking word. He is a two faced hypocrite'
Most failing schools in England and according to Ofsted 50 odd secondary's have never been good, including ours, are on the coast. Guess what most coastal areas have TORY/Ukip MP, actually under New Labour(Tory Lite) was the only time our school got close to being good. Tory cuts have fucked it.
woodhill it may have failed him in some respects, A levels probably, but school team are National Champions, so not all bad.
But I totally blame All right of centre MPs for the state of state education, it was crap under Thatcher/Major I went to school 1980-5 and its worse under Cameron/May. But they don't care as they use private. that will upset Dapplegrey

BrownLiverSpot · 04/02/2018 21:15

Yes, lurker, I do think we need change towards the left and I'm glad an increasing number of people agree with me. I assume you're not one of them.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 04/02/2018 21:20

You can't claims to support democracy and then turn a blind eye to verbal attacks on judges and civil servants.

So what you're actually saying is that you approve of the suppresion of opinions you don't like.

No it isn't what I;m saying.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 04/02/2018 21:30

You can't claims to support democracy and then turn a blind eye to verbal attacks on judges and civil servants.

Who has turned a blind eye?

The civil servants who were misrepresented had their recourse in the papers & on various news & political programs.

A statement was made in the HoC to apologise for misrepresentation too.

The headlines and articles about the judges were condemned too.

The breaking point poster was widely condemned also.

Why are you pretending that these things went unchallenged?

GhostofFrankGrimes · 04/02/2018 21:33

Why are you pretending that these things went unchallenged?

They keep happening don't they? So the apologies/condemnation count for shit because they are meaningless.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 04/02/2018 21:43

Apologies, regrets..

Squirming Tory Jacob Rees-Mogg says he 'deeply regrets' dining with far-right activist who was recorded in racist rant

Britain is a fairly right of centre country, it is the only country in Europe to back the neo-liberal politics. So when anti EU posters say leaving will rid us of this they are being dishonest. Thatcher/Major/Blair/Cameron all stood on neo-liberal tickets and all encouraged the EU to become more neo-liberal.
We have shit benefits/workers rights compared to the other major northern European countries.
So yes I agree move to the left and go back to consensus politics of the late 40's/50's and 60's.
I think we are all different, I grew up on Free School Meals, first generation not in council housing, but no television until I was 6 and no colour until 11. No central heating and some days next to nothing for tea/dinner. I never went abroad until I was 21 and wife had 1 holiday until she was 18.
So to see food banks and soup kitchens return in 21st century Britain is disgusting. Under the watch of this threads sweethearts Gove, Boris and the food bank cheerleader Rees Mogg.
Yet most on here support his rights to his views and think people aren't allow to protest against those repugnant views.
Must be lovely to have grown up in middle/upper class heated well fed ignorance and continue to support Rees Mogg's vision for 2020 Britain

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 04/02/2018 21:47

They happen because they are allowed to happen.

They are allowed to happen because this is a free & democratic country - this means that you are allowed to think & say whatever you want, so long as it's within the law.

Would you prefer that our freedoms of speech & thought were curtailed?

PinkertonSmythe · 04/02/2018 21:48

GhostofFrankGrimes

Are you able to tell the difference between headlines and groups of masked thugs performing so-called "direct action"?

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 04/02/2018 21:50

User - you described my childhood too.

Just because I have a different opinion to you, does not mean I "have grown up in middle/upper class heated well fed ignorance and continue to support Rees Mogg's vision for 2020 Britain".

It is very narrow minded of you to assume the things you do.

PinkertonSmythe · 04/02/2018 21:52

Why do you think Corbyn prioritized abolishing tuition fees at enormous expense over spending that would have helped the working class? Because Momentum Labour is as middle-class as it gets. Unless you think Milne and Lansman just climbed out of a coal mine?

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 04/02/2018 21:53

In fact, you didn't exactly describe my childhood as we were still council (Not first gen post council like you) & didn't have a tv til I was 9. I wasn't on free school meals though.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 04/02/2018 21:54

Momentum labour is the epitome of champagne socialism 🍾

GhostofFrankGrimes · 04/02/2018 21:55

If you peddle hate and division, dog whistle politics expect a backlash. Inflammatory divide and conquer headlines and soundbites exist for a reason. Its not to encourage healthy debate.

user1471450935 · 04/02/2018 21:57

It makes no difference I suppose, but I haven't seen any news for 48 hours, no social media or video content available to me. But was this an open invite event JRM attended. So was it in the student union and he sat with other MP's or people who could challenge his views, so a pro choice MP or a Hilary Benn non Brexitter type and any student could come and listen/debate.
Or was it an invite only( at huge cost) open only to certain JRM fanatics( most on this thread) and he could spout his toxic views unchallenged.
Because if the later, he is a coward, and he is no better than the protesters. Because he shouldn't just talk to his supporter's.
Let's see how long it takes to condemn that meeting Ghost posted.
If the Tory's condemn them selves.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 04/02/2018 22:00

Man of the people.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 04/02/2018 22:03

User, it was a speech that he'd been invited to give at the university - free as far as I know, but ticketed I think. Not sure if it was open to all, or just to students.

A group of people wearing balaclavas stood at the back shouting over him, so he went to them & invited them to talk - they just kept shouting 'fascist', 'racist' etc & wouldn't take the opportunity to question him or call him out on anything specific on a 1 to 1 basis.

He continued to calmly try to engage them & it descended from there.

woodhill · 04/02/2018 22:03

As a Christian why would JRM support euthanasia. A lot of people don't.

Julie8008 · 04/02/2018 22:04

So your describing Momentum / John Macdonald's politics there?

Julie8008 · 04/02/2018 22:05

I still cant believe several posters are here trying to defend violently shutting down free speech, just because they dont like it.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 04/02/2018 22:06
