Just watched the clip of Jacob rees mogg at Bristol university, when a few momentum activists try to cause havoc and stop him from talking

Whatever anyone thinks of this man, I have to say he was pretty gutsy going up to them, considering they are all hiding behind Balaclavas and scarves and there wasn't any security there.
Most politicians wouldn't have gone near them, let alone try to talk to them

I like him. Yes his views are controversial and I don't agree with some of them, but at least he stands up for what he believes in

If he's PM in 12 months that won't be because people voted for him - see Gordon brown. And what happened to him the first chance people got to vote!

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 04/02/2018 13:05

I have to agree with Bertrand - JRM is becoming increasingly likely to be the next Tory leader.

Ironically, if it happens this will have been driven in no small part by the left rather than the right.

I wouldn't want him in charge, I disagree with most of his politics & beliefs. But! he's a rare breed of politician - apparently honest & transparent & not changing his opinions based on who the current audience is - I respect that facet of him tbh, however much I don't agree with him, and so do many others.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 04/02/2018 14:02

Well with the unsavoury characters that have allegedly been let back into Labour, according to todays papers, that's me and my family done with Labour.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 04/02/2018 14:33

Apparently the Brexit wing of the cabinet are trying to strong arm May into leaving the customs union with a team threatening to oust her if she doesn't. That team includes JRM as chancellor.

That makes a hell of a lot more sense than PM. He has only been an MP since 2010, he is a back bench MP who has held no ministerial responsibility and has no diplomatic experience. It would really make no sense for somebody with his total lack of experience to be PM at such a sensitive time.

I don't believe he can win elections either. I don't believe his personal and religious views would be off putting to the vast majority of people who consider voting Tory, most people who strongly object to that are people who would never consider voting Tory anyway. However, I do believe that the fact he is an extremely rich man who has defended things like tax havens would play very, very badly with the electorate and could be extremely damaging.

I think him being chancellor makes much, much more sense because of his previous financial experience and because it's a role where his Catholic moral stance is likely to cause minimal conflict.

bridgetoc · 04/02/2018 14:46

Boris, Gove, JRM.......... Backed up with Davies and Fox?

This is what the country needs, and what most Tory supporters want, and what us brexiteers voted for.

If May doesn't pull her socks up, and get the likes of Hammond under control she must go.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 04/02/2018 14:54

I actually think a Boris/JRM PM/chancellor double act might stand a chance of winning elections as it goes.

Boris does get a lot of flack, but I think he mainly gets it from people who would never consider the Tories anyway. I think he's quite attractive to those who would.

Not attractive in a wanting to bang way though. That would be weird.

LifeBeginsAtGin · 04/02/2018 15:01

Boris, Gove, JRM.......... Backed up with Davies and Fox?

OMG - sounds like a srong, winning team. Most sensible thing I have heard in a long time.

The UK is leaving, lets have a team who will do the best for the UK and not have a wishy washy PM still clinging to the EU but her kitten heels.

bridgetoc · 04/02/2018 15:08

Boris, for what ever reason, is very popular. Yes, some people hate him, but for me a politician should be hated by a certain percentage of the electorate.

Boris bucked the national trend when he twice won the election to be Mayor in London, a city that is now a Labour stronghold. More importantly, he managed to convince the country to vote Brexit.

People vote for him......

BertrandRussell · 04/02/2018 15:18

As someone once said "the British public love a toff"

AntArcticFox · 04/02/2018 15:19

Boris never looked convinced or convincing on Brexit to me.

No one person (or bus!) won Brexit. Boris and his advisers would be bigheaded indeed if they thought he had done it.

AntArcticFox · 04/02/2018 15:22

Well Harriet Harman, Tony Benn and Stella Creasy are/ were all "toffs" so no, I don't think it is held against them by the average person.

Feelitstill · 04/02/2018 15:23

Boris never seemed that convincing to me.
If it wasn’t for Nigel Farage remain would have won for sure.
UKIP & Farage got us out of the EU.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 04/02/2018 15:25

Tony Blair was a 'toff' he went to public school. And even Comrade Corbyn got two Es at A'Level from his minor public school...

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 04/02/2018 15:27

I agree it was Farage that convinced the country

Boris hopped from one side to the other

Eltonjohnssyrup · 04/02/2018 15:31

London was marginally less of a turgid shithole under Boris.

It wasn't quite the stabby acid flinging terrorist dodging cesspool it is at the moment anyway.

Abra1de · 04/02/2018 15:34

Not to any of them I know.

To be fair Khan has had to U-turn on stop and search

Farage and UKIP, must take a certain amount of credit for the whole anti E.U movement, but during the referendum, they actually cost Brexit votes, not won them. The likes of The BBC knew this, which is why they gave him maximum coverage.

In fairness to Farage, even he admits that without Boris, Brexit didn't stand a chance.
David Cameron knew this also, which is why he hit the roof when Boris told him he would run for Brexit.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 04/02/2018 15:45

Abra1de

Can't find any more recent polling, but he was rated at 69% approval in September (which is extremely good) and was the most popular choice amongst Conservatives to be next leader. So perhaps the people you know aren't very representative?

Abra1de · 04/02/2018 16:02

Perhaps not. They have brains.

BertrandRussell · 04/02/2018 16:03

“It wasn't quite the stabby acid flinging terrorist dodging cesspool it is at the moment anyway“

Blimey. Do you ever actually ever go to London?

Eltonjohnssyrup · 04/02/2018 16:04

Blimey. Do you ever actually ever go to London?

Yes. I was born there and grew up there and my family still live there so about once every month or two.

BertrandRussell · 04/02/2018 16:16

You obviously have a different definition of “ stabby acid flinging terrorist dodging cesspool” than I do, then.

BertrandRussell · 04/02/2018 16:18

And JRM will be leader of the Conservative Party in less than 3 months.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 04/02/2018 16:19

Oh London has it's plus sides. I'm not denying it. For example if one wants to find crack one can purchase it with a great deal of ease.
