I'm politically neautral on Brexit, it's a complicated issue, but I'm interested in the consequences that are coming out now. If you voted for Brexit, what were your reasons?

durgha
I don't think that it matters whether laws are made in Dublin, Glasgow, Birmingham, as long as they are agreed
I guess that why I voted leave and you didn't, because it matters to me where laws that dictate how I live are made (Just ask Nicola Sturgeon). Its a very important part of democracy.

Because we are 1/28 of the EU every single person in the UK could resist a law the EU passed and they could just overrule us and say tough, we know better.

So the question is why do you think the people in foreign countries should decide our laws? Why are you so happy to surrender our democracy?

durgha · 31/01/2018 01:20

faith, you lost me when you started this..
"😂😂
She's doing a rubbish job of refuting!!

Some people are easily impressed 🤣".
Nasty.

durgha · 31/01/2018 01:25

Julie, the EU is made up of the countries that are members. If member states agree on, say animal welfare practices, does it matter where the bums on seats are?

Julie8008 · 31/01/2018 01:36

Of course it matters because you end up forcing countries to do things the people do not agree to do and they have no ability to enact change because you have taken away their democracy.

Where does it lead, an EU police to go into a country and replace local governments? Didn't they do that to Greece, during the worst of the financial crisis?

durgha · 31/01/2018 01:42

And for what it's worth, Julie, I'm Scottish and voted, like the majority of people living in Scotland who voted, to remain in the EU. You say you voted out "because it matters to me where laws that dictate how I live are made". Are you going to tell me to shut up twice? Once, because I voted to remain and twice because Westminster gets to decide what we are allowed to have devolved? Actually thrice, because you want some laws you haven't got a clue about to be sworn on English/British soil. Holy Toly.

durgha · 31/01/2018 01:48

julie What has the EU done to you or yours that you disagree with and wouldn't have happened if you didn't get Brexit?

Julie8008 · 31/01/2018 01:49

durgha and if Scottish people want to leave the UK then I will support their decision, I wont support people trying to force them to stay in the Union against their will. But so far the Scottish people dont want to leave the UK. That's democracy. Something the Catalan people where denied, as your beloved EU walked on by.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 31/01/2018 01:50

Nasty?!
You've a very thin-skinned definition of nasty.

durgha · 31/01/2018 01:51

would

notangelinajolie · 31/01/2018 01:52

I voted for Brexit because I do not wish to live in a Federal State with a Federal Army in which 28 countries are ruled by 3 'dominant' countries. I prefer to live in 'one world' where all countries and their people's are equal
I do not want to live in a superstate bubble of countries who discriminate against those countries and people not fortunate enough to be included in their 'club'.

durgha · 31/01/2018 01:54

faith, yes I guess I'm just a softy.

Julie8008 · 31/01/2018 02:01

durgha I gave a long list of why I voted to leave the EU on the first page.

In summary. DC asked the EU to reform, the EU said no. We were asked, imo, to stay in the EU for the rest of my lifetime. The implication being that Westminster would use a remain vote as an excuse to push through further EU integration.

We where threatened with punishment if we tried to leave. Well as a rule I generally dont give in to threats and decided the best future for my children was as a sovereign nation again. So they will have the ability to forge the kind of country they want rather than one dictated from the EU.

So why are you so keen to regain independence from Westminster just so you can give it to different country's? Seems a bit strange!

durgha · 31/01/2018 02:01

Julie What has the EU done to you or yours that you disagree with and requires brexit to make your life better?

durgha · 31/01/2018 02:04

Apologies, julie cross post. Hadn't seen your ramblings.

makeourfuture · 31/01/2018 06:20

Of course it matters because you end up forcing countries to do things the people do not agree to do and they have no ability to enact change because you have taken away their democracy.

Each Member State is fully represented in the processes of the EU.

I think what you really mean is that England should be able to boss the others around.

FaithHopeCharityDesperation · 31/01/2018 06:57

I think what you really mean is that England should be able to boss the others around.

You are assuming she 'really meant that' on what basis?

Most of the problem in these discussions is the ascribing of 'what I think they think'.
Usually by a vocal minority of anti-Brexiters about leave voters.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 31/01/2018 07:23

No the problem here is that people can’t see beyond debunked slogans, feign insult when politely questioned and then eventually lash out because their bias/echo chamber has been disturbed.

I see in the news this morning that car production is down. Keep on winning!

MissionItsPossible · 31/01/2018 07:34

And the wheels on the (NHS 350 million) bus goes round and round Grin

FunkyCatsFiestyStats · 31/01/2018 07:34

I voted leave, which would shock most of my friends if they knew, as I am a leftie labour supporter.

Honestly, I am pro the EU as a concept. I think the free movement of people only strengthens our country and allies us with other nations.

However, having been to Brussels and seeing it with my own eyes - the EU is a corrupt, wasteful organisation. Its books have never been balanced. I just feel these kind of practices are so far removed from the purpose the EU is supposed to fulfill.

GhostofFrankGrimes · 31/01/2018 07:49

EU accounts I believe are online. Books not being balanced sounds like more bs.

Feelitstill · 31/01/2018 07:50

Most people know that, which is why leave won. It’s only a small minority of remainers who are still in denial, & probably because they have a personal connection with the EU via their jobs. No other reason for the extreme passion & anger. Why would anyone be this sad about leaving a failed political union? It doesn’t make sense unless there’s a personal reason.

Subtleconstraints · 31/01/2018 07:53

Funkycats what did you see with your own eyes that is so corrupt and wasteful?

makeourfuture · 31/01/2018 07:57

Why no plans?

If you are opening a schnitzel kart you make plans.

Here is an experiment you can do today. Active mumsnet research!

Tell your spouse you are thinking of opening a side business. They will say, "Show me your plans".

KennDodd · 31/01/2018 08:01

Nor did I believe the NHS would get millions of pounds extra every day, nor for any of the reasons Remainers mostly assume.

I hear that a lot from Leavers, that nobody was stupid enough to believe that.

It's interesting, after all it was the official Vote Leave campaign that used that and it's attached most closely to Boris Johnson, so I have a few thoughts on why it was used.

The Vote Leave campaign were stupid enough to believe it, dispute the ONS telling them repeatedly it was not true and not to use it. It this is the case than that raises the question what else were they stupid enough to believe?

Or, they knew it was misleading but thought the public would be stupid enough believe it, so used it, this raises the question what else did the lie about?

Or, they knew it was false, knew the public would see straight though it, decided it would be good to use anyway and would gain them votes.

KennDodd · 31/01/2018 08:02

The third option seems the least likely to me.
