To think Corbyn's maths is wrong again

www.google.co.uk/amp/www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2018/01/28/jeremy-corbyn-announces-labour-will-buy-every-homeless-person/amp/

How is this going to work? Does he mean "give" as in legally transfer or does he mean no rent? How does he think the houses are going to be maintained and utility bills paid? Is it fair on people who've been on waiting lists? Is it really going to reduce the numbers of homeless people if it becomes seen as a quick way to skip the queue?

I got back to my car in an NCP the other night, to find 5 homeless people right next to it with foil and needles. They were also going through some wallets (which may well have been their own; I didn't stop to check of course). The state of them was very sad and although I did feel intimidated at first, I also didn't report them because I thought, where else would they go - it's chucking it down. But then again, no way would they be able to look after a house. They were like zombies.

He's absolutely right to want to do something about the homeless situation. There should be more lots more help. But I don't think this is the answer. AIBU?

Haha, I’m not sure. I think that proportional representation is the answer. At least the LDs tempered the ambitions of the tories. As this thread shows, having polar sides of a debate doesn’t get anyway. Proportional representation would mean a much more balanced approach to government as more compromises are made.

The sad thing for me is that politicians put power above the actual needs of the population.

Justanotherlurker · 29/01/2018 21:15

I agree PR would be nice, but as with the last chance we had, both Labour and Tories want to keep it as it is.

Plus I don't think the british public is really accepting of PR if we do get the same kind of results as the rest of europe, some of the far right parties who are running very close in the rest of europe make UKIP look very tame.

Rebeccaslicker · 29/01/2018 21:31

a clean slate would be nice. And some qualifications. You know - to be in education in the government, you actually have to have some experience in that area, that sort of thing. The Canadian government is a good example of that!

I think he means provide a home for them, not legally transfer ownership. If they aren't working I assume they would be entitled to benefits like anyone else. It is easier for people to get help with addictions, mental health problems and get jobs if they have an address.

Money can be found if there is a will, May found bribe money for the DUP didn't she.

makeourfuture · 30/01/2018 06:45

Indeed. They are not zombies.

Headofthehive55 · 30/01/2018 08:54

A lot of families in temp housing are there because they were evicted due to arrears. Are we suggesting there is no consequence to arrears they get another house anyway?

Perhaps it would be better to get housing benefit paid direct to landlords. It might encourage a landlord to take on a housing benefit tenant.

LifeBeginsAtGin · 30/01/2018 09:17

If the Tories and Labour could be just right and left of centre it would be better, but then we have Momentum swinging so far bloody left they are almost on the right.

makeourfuture · 30/01/2018 09:23

And Tories running some sort of purge of the undesirables.

LifeBeginsAtGin · 30/01/2018 09:28

morning Mr Lansman!

Believeitornot · 30/01/2018 11:25

I think they need to look at why they’re in arrears in the first place. Definitely agree that HB should go direct to landlords (some councils do offer this sort of thing) but there are structural issues going on in terms of a lack of social housing, insecure private tenancies, dodgy landlords and high rents.

WitchesHatRim · 30/01/2018 12:13

Do you ever take a day off makeourfuture?

You seem to pop up on any thread that vaguely says anything slightly disparaging agai st Labour or pro Tory.

Rebeccaslicker · 30/01/2018 12:21

Housing benefit used to be paid directly to landlords. I had a holiday job in a letting agency when they decided to pay it to the tenants instead. Our faces: Confused - and yes, the number of tenants in arrears did go up somewhat.

Make - if you really can't see that there is a huge spectrum of homeless people, then you need to get out of your ivory tower, get outside, and look around. It's horribly sad but there are some people functioning at the zombie end of the scale. Drugs do wicked things to people.

He's amazingly dedicated, Witcheshat. One has to admire that.

Gosh Chardonnay, it's like you haven't read any of his posts. "One" never does anything. It's always "we" (but never in the royal sense, naturally) Wink

Do you ever take a day off makeourfuture

There are 3 makes at the moment. I am just logging in now and it takes a few moments to see what kind of corner morning make has painted me in to. Dude is supposed to do a handover.

LadyinCement · 30/01/2018 13:06

I presume Momentum have a watch on social media so they can spring in immediately anyone types "Corbyn".

You won't find makeourfuture on any other threads, I'm sure, talking about their mil, or dog training or debating baby names...

Rebeccaslicker · 30/01/2018 13:12

Maybe it's like when Harry Potter says "Voldemort" and a load of Death Eaters appear immediately...

OP posts:
ChardonnaysPrettySister · 30/01/2018 13:25

I’ll try to squeeze in a few mentions if Corbyn on S&B, Lady, see what happens.

LadyinCement · 30/01/2018 13:35

ha ha... Can you imagine the titles, S&B: "Where can I buy a corduroy jacket like Jeremy Corbyn's?" or Travel Advice: "Where can I stay in Islington that's not near Jeremy Corbyn?"

The Momentum social media watch team will go into a tailspin!

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 30/01/2018 13:59

We could always try What do you think of Jeremy?

Will work in Baby names and you n the Doghouse.

Believeitornot · 31/01/2018 06:20

Glad to see that as ever there’s no proper scrutiny of Theresa May who’s the one actually in power and doing the most damage.

makeourfuture · 31/01/2018 06:26

Good morning.

Today let's focus on Tory:

  • Debt
  • Failed austerity
  • Housing failure
  • Plans for NHS privatisation
  • Education cuts
  • No plan Brexit
makeourfuture · 31/01/2018 06:28

Glad to see that as ever there’s no proper scrutiny of Theresa May who’s the one actually in power and doing the most damage.

Absolutely. The house is on fire. We need to stay focused.

Rebeccaslicker · 31/01/2018 06:56

So go on - start your own thread. Lots of people will pile in, I'm sure.

But this is a thread about CORBYN's inability to think out, describe or cost a policy.

ShotsFired · 31/01/2018 07:20

@makeourfuture Absolutely. The house is on fire. We need to stay focused.

Well then let's not invite an arsonist with a can of petrol to the party, eh?
