AIBU Trollhunting is ruining AIBU

Trueheart1 · 26/01/2018 22:47

I understand troll hunting if the OP is giving dangerous advice. However, increasingly every single poster is being grilled by troll hunters about every aspect of their post. It makes a thread hard to follow and really boring to read.

I don't understand why the troll hunters do it, there is an easy to use report button. I have read several threads in the last week where the OP was subjected to constant snide comments about the veracity of their post. I think if these troll hunters persist then people won't want to post at all.

Oh... stupid me. Really sorry, I didn't RTFT and thought MNHQ meant they delete the thread of someone they think is a troll if it's been reported too often. What you were actually saying is that you don't delete the account of someone who has reported too often.

Caprinihahahaha · 27/01/2018 11:35

Trolls, fantasists and people who just generally make up full shit are the biggest problem
There seems to be very little left on the site that’s just straight up true

Christinayangstwistedsista · 27/01/2018 11:35

Janey

The difference is that the person who made a joke about Milton, on another site, was banned.

Plus the fact that I’ve been in two national newspapers in recent weeks because the site is now click bait heaven

Sparklingbrook · 27/01/2018 11:37

Fuckit2017 that's all very dramatic. And rarely happens.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 27/01/2018 11:41

Trolls have ruined this place.
But if you want a site full of threads about “cheeky fuckers” with their accompanying band of Pom Pom waving numpties, pervs, begging hard done by’s and the like well it’s all just grand

ShastaTrinity · 27/01/2018 11:45

Come on ,most troll hunters have the same goal as trolls, create as much drama as possible. They are making it a game for posters to come with as much nonsense as possible.

It's also true that some posters cannot accept that not everyone has the same lifestyle than they do. Anyone doing anything different is accused of being a troll because no one could possible have a different life or a different opinion.

When someone post a thread that sounds very far from reality, you can just ignore, or play along and the real troll will soon get bored.

you feel duty bound to help

I think that if you feel like this, you’re probably taking the internet too seriously.

twattymctwatterson · 27/01/2018 12:02

Op the particular thread that you're annoyed about wasn't ruined by troll hunting. It was deleted for being a work of fiction. A particularly poor one at that! Do you really want to keep threads that are utter bollocks just for fun? CF threads have become utterly tedious and over egged. You do know you can find much better quality fiction in the library?

Twatty, I would have rather not have read through pages of forensic analysis on taking vs leaving your phone number when you move house. I sometimes think troll hunters imagine that they are Poirot.

paxillin · 27/01/2018 12:27

I think MN needs a no-name-change topic for normal posters to talk about stuff that actually happened. AIBU can can be for the trolls and cheecky fucker fans. Even then, the poo pee period school punishment troll needs to be deleted daily.

Sparklingbrook · 27/01/2018 12:32

We tried. Can't believe it was 2 years ago now.

C8H10N4O2 · 27/01/2018 12:58

you want to be careful people get called twats and cunts here all the time

Can't imagine people doing that to you - why ever would they want to?

The problem is trolls without whom troll hunters are redundant. Not all trolls aim to seek attention - too much can get in the way of a serious troll.

Growth in trolling is standard response to any group becoming well known, especially one which regularly features in the tabloids. This has always happened to popular groups.

As you grow you need more ways to manage the different issues.
I'd like to see the ability for NCers to indicate longevity/history piloted. Its not a guarantee (lets face it, a few of the biggest trolls on MN have been merrily posting for years with apparent impunity) but it helps.

Better analytics on new threads can also help but that isn't trivial to implement. Tracking IP addresses is a useful tool but its very easy to change or mask an IP address if your intentions are bad.

Moderating trolls is not easy but the C&D affair massively undermined trust in HQ's ability to act on trolling. Its not surprising when people use as their first port of call to check threads.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 27/01/2018 13:13

I still have an email from HQ suggesting MN may no longer be the place for me (eg, shut up or fuck off) for reporting a long term troll (of the scamming beggar type)

Mind you, I'd probably rather read a scamming beggar troll than a Royston Vasey SpanGran wannabe self-publisher pile of shite. The influx and encouragement of these by the terminally stupid is taking over where the PB invasion left off.

I rarely post outside of perfume threads these days. I get my fantasy off the telly.

ShastaTrinity · 27/01/2018 13:16

*I think MN needs a no-name-change topic for normal posters to talk about stuff that actually happened.

it will just put off people from posting anything serious.
Imagine there's an incident at school (or in my office) and I want to post about it. Anyone involved will recognise the place and the event. If I can't name change, they will go through through my history and easily identify me. Why would anyone want that?

Real trolls or journalists will just create fake account and keep them running innocently for awhile before striking.

Sparklingbrook · 27/01/2018 13:19

You could namechange and post that elsewhere ShastaTrinity if you really desperately needed to post it on MN. Not in the no name change topic.

All the other topics would run as normal so you could put it in AIBU like everything else.

Marinade · 27/01/2018 13:19

@C8H10N402 Am a bit intrigued, are you able to explain what the C&D affair is? And also the reference to Milton?

ShastaTrinity · 27/01/2018 13:28

then you would just have a "regular" troll, how is that going to help?

Again, I have been accused of being a troll several times when posting on a particular subject. Some posters are not trolls, but consider themselves "MN Royalty" and find it acceptable to abuse and swear at others constantly. Unpleasant childish people, but not trolls per say.

Sparklingbrook · 27/01/2018 13:30

If you have been accused of being a troll 'several times' what on earth have you been posting about ShastaTrinity?

Nanny0gg · 27/01/2018 13:40

We all know about Milton

No 'we' don't.

And I'm relatively long-standing.

ShastaTrinity · 27/01/2018 13:40

Some posts where I just dare having a different opinion to the majority.

it was about people being sacked, and people not being offered jobs. Without too much identifying details, i was telling some of the real reasons they had been let go - or not employed. That did not go down too well.

TheStoic · 27/01/2018 13:44

That did not go down too well.

The real reasons who had been let go? Were you talking about people you know in real life?
