AIBU Trollhunting is ruining AIBU

I understand troll hunting if the OP is giving dangerous advice. However, increasingly every single poster is being grilled by troll hunters about every aspect of their post. It makes a thread hard to follow and really boring to read.

I don't understand why the troll hunters do it, there is an easy to use report button. I have read several threads in the last week where the OP was subjected to constant snide comments about the veracity of their post. I think if these troll hunters persist then people won't want to post at all.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 27/01/2018 13:45

I can see why that didn't go down too well TBH.

ShastaTrinity · 27/01/2018 13:49

The reason why it didn't go down too well was only because posters refused to believe any of it was true, not because they disagree with mentioning real events.

Sparklingbrook · 27/01/2018 13:50

Is there any reason they didn't believe any of it was true? Was it very outlandish?

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 27/01/2018 13:50

Grin I’m getting that familiar feeling...

ShastaTrinity · 27/01/2018 13:54

I don't think it was outlandish, it was possibly not really politically correct, but it was true.

Some posters also cannot accept that you have an opinion on something without being a troll either. I don't want to start another bun fight, but imagine a thread about Brexit where posters voted "leave". Being the only one voting "remain" would not make you a troll, would it?
It wasn't about that at all, but you get the idea.

EleanorXx · 27/01/2018 13:56

It's definitely something that is on the increase - not just on Mumsnet but across many forums
Eh? No it’s not, if anything trolls are going down on most forums, mumsnet just welcomes them as they make troll hunting a crime.

Sparklingbrook · 27/01/2018 13:59

Not politically correct but you chose to post it on MN, there's a clue right there possibly.

At least you know what not to post now.

ShastaTrinity · 27/01/2018 14:05

Not politically correct but you chose to post it on MN

You wouldn't post example of racism for example? I don't think you understand what I am talking about.

IvorBiggun · 27/01/2018 14:19

Ok you lot, what to do about this thread that has been reported multiple times in then last 3 hours and is still there? It has everything:

Ridiculous premise
Fan girls
Lack of brain cells being engaged by posters

The op of the thread is asking posters to do RL stalking of a supposed errant husband.

Do you after three hours of inaction from MNHQ...

a) sit on your hands
b) find a thread about CFers to get absorbed in and cheerlead like mad even though it’s all clearly bollox
c) Post a warning on the thread
d) go and watch kitten videos on YouTube
e) do some improving and wholesome activities with the DCs in real life?

Sparklingbrook · 27/01/2018 14:20

I would not post an example of racism on MN, no.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 27/01/2018 14:25

Well if we take MNHQs lead on it the right thing to do is read all the reports, post a “I’m a cool HQer” post on the thread showing your “I’m down with the kids” credentials then wait to see how wacky the thread gets as an indicator of how likely it is to be picked up by outside media. If it turns out to be an actual RL situation with a burning RL outcome they will delete. “Because is the number of reports they had.” If it gets picked up by pretty52 or the ladbible they’ll let it stand.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 27/01/2018 14:26

Burning=boring

ShastaTrinity · 27/01/2018 14:26

I would not post an example of racism on MN, no.

why not? Do you really believe it's better to ignore issues and pretend they don't exist?

Sparklingbrook · 27/01/2018 14:33

I don't feel the need to discuss absolutely everything on MN That's why not. Hmm
Just because I don't feel the need to post on MN about something doesn't mean I think it doesn't exist!

People use MN for different purposes.

ShastaTrinity · 27/01/2018 14:36

ok

just doesn't mean what other people post is untrue.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 27/01/2018 14:38

It's all just tedious. The name-changing GFs get on my nerves more than anybody else and I think they're the ones spoiling the site for everybody. I expect they're regulars who like to retain their 'pristine' username so change to be an arse. As much as they aggravate me I just think they're sad, desperate losers in RL who get no attention there so must create it here.

I'm not interested in posting anywhere but here, it's a far bigger platform with more topics, not just picking over posters and posts and I actually think that MNHQ do a fair job. I've been 'Mumsnet calling'd' myself and it's never been unfairly. That's my experience anyway.

Sparklingbrook · 27/01/2018 14:40

I have no way of telling what anyone says is true or untrue. Nobody does.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 27/01/2018 14:42

Me neither - and that is the premise of why troll-hunting can't work. I've seen as many threads declared as 'trolls' that haven't been as have. Nobody ever posts back to say, "Sorry, I was wrong", do they? Lots of bluster and outrage when a thread is deleted though.

Most of the deleted threads on TIO turned out to be PBP, not trolls anyway.

paxillin · 27/01/2018 14:43

Yes, namechanging to be goady. In case you wondered, if you have ever started a thread with "namechanged for this, because I know it is controversial": You are a racist/ disablist/ misogynist/ goady twat.

Sparklingbrook · 27/01/2018 14:45

Yes the huge announcement of the namechange is always a little bit suspicious. Trolls and PBPs use it too.

Coconutspongexo · 27/01/2018 14:53

Also hate the CF threads and the cheerleaders more than the troll hunting. I think placemarking makes threads harder to read than ‘this didn’t happen’

GoldilocksAndTheThreePears · 27/01/2018 16:55

I think the word troll gets thrown around a little too readily. Disagrees with majority of answers? Troll. Understandable drip-feed (easy to miss details when making a post). Troll. Post issues seem unlikely? Troll. Poster has no experience of/doesn't understand something? Troll. I know I've found myself changing details to be more 'believable' or main-stream. Just because something seems unlikely, or more often unlikely to happen to me, doesn't make it literally impossible. I've seen an instance of calling troll based on a previous post but enough time had passed that the two instances could easily have occurred but once troll is called, there goes any chance of a useful thread.

Plumes · 27/01/2018 17:32

Also hate the CF threads and the cheerleaders more than the troll hunting.

Same.

Endless threads about supposed cheeky fuckers, and twit like cheerleaders getting over-involved in the nonsense.

LimberlostGirl · 27/01/2018 17:39

I missed the thread which seems to have brought about this one. It does occur to me though that starting this one means a double whammy success if someone was winding people up.
