AIBU Trollhunting is ruining AIBU

I understand troll hunting if the OP is giving dangerous advice. However, increasingly every single poster is being grilled by troll hunters about every aspect of their post. It makes a thread hard to follow and really boring to read.

I don't understand why the troll hunters do it, there is an easy to use report button. I have read several threads in the last week where the OP was subjected to constant snide comments about the veracity of their post. I think if these troll hunters persist then people won't want to post at all.

We do have a few forum rules to make sure we keep Talk a good place to hang out:

No personal attacks
No posts that break the law
No trolling, misleading or deliberately inflammatory behaviour
No trollhunting
No spamming
You can report any of the above to us using the report button above each post.

Remember, we do not pre-moderate posts. We rely on our members to let us know about any posts that break our Guidelines.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 27/01/2018 00:35

As is trolling but HQ let it stand far too often.

HuskyMcClusky · 27/01/2018 00:38

Yes, the troll-hunters are definitely the problem.

Not the 99% bullshit troll posts.

🙄

P.s. The Cheeky Fucker thing? NOT FUNNY ANYMORE.

DonnyAndVladSittingInATree · 27/01/2018 00:42

Agree with that husky. It’s like a CF competition in here at the minute. Who can post the CF story to end all CF stories.

hiphopchick · 27/01/2018 00:54

YANBU. I read the weird thread earlier about some people trying to access someone's house thinking they were the previous owners, and 1 in 5 posts were deleted by MN. So annoying and tiresome and hard to read.

HuskyMcClusky · 27/01/2018 00:58

So annoying and tiresome and hard to read.

Oh, I think it was pretty annoying and tiresome before that happened.

bummypicklemummy · 27/01/2018 01:05

I agree. I think Mumsnet should do a 'three counts and you're banned.'

A while back I posted with a nc about a couple of topics that were very upsetting for me and was looking for advice and support.

Being called a troll nastily on both of them was actually surprisingly hurtful.

IkeaGrinch · 27/01/2018 01:12

Yeah it’s annoying. Especially as I guess many posters change a few details of the stuff they’re posting about to protect their anonymity so they can easily post some minor inconsistency that troll hunters then pounce on.

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 27/01/2018 01:20

But sometimes it takes so long for MN to act. Like that guy who was here every weekend with the, “why is it ok for women to rape men”, and “it’s unfair on my son that this girl called rape” type threads. And every time people took it hook, line and sinker! Astounding they can’t spot something that obvious. Yes, they all got deleted eventually, but there were a lot of upset people. I don’t see anything wrong with pointing out he’s a frequently posting troll so people can maybe not get invested.

Trueheart1 · 27/01/2018 06:22

As I said, I totally understand if the poster is an MRA or a perv but I am recently finding every post full of smug troll hunters making snide comments and grilling OP.
It is very clearly against the rules and is really boring.
Do troll hunters really think we need lots of them on every post because we are all too stupid to think for ourselves?

OP posts:
TeasndToast · 27/01/2018 06:35

There was a well known hard right MRA on the other day though. I didn’t even need to do an advanced search to remember his posting history as previous posts had always been so misogynistic, racist and generally unpleasant I knew exactly who they were.
When he started to say he was a Ugandan female feminist activist (while denying the existence of sexism and racism in his life) to discredit the women on there I really wanted to be point out all his other threads.
But a TAAT and troll hunting is against the rules so I didn’t bother. But some long standing posters got sucked in still.
I think he eventually got banned by name changing and calling a long term member a ‘cunt’ Hmm
Sure he will be back though.

echt · 27/01/2018 06:38

Simply not true. YABU.

KayaG · 27/01/2018 06:53

It’s sad to see good people sucked in and you feel duty bound to help

Well don't. Just report and bugger off. It's not your duty, FFS.

Chugalug · 27/01/2018 06:55

I had 2 threads going a couple of weeks a go,where I desperately needed advice ,and things at home were spinning out of control,I asked for help and advice. And some people were lovely and helpful and calmed me down, but others just thought I was a troll ,or making it up ..it was quite a grilling ...so it's put me off posting again when I need advice..will just post about trivial stuff from now on...ive name changed since a couple of times..

footballmum · 27/01/2018 07:03

See I find the GF more annoying. The ones who you know are taking a totally opposing view and express it in a really unpleasant aggressive way. It’s horrible and unnecessary and I think was made MN quite a hostile place. It’s certainly not the place to seek support or ask advice if you’re in any way fragile or vulnerable as I think it could do real damage to some people Sad

BashStreetKid · 27/01/2018 07:09

It gets seriously irritating when troll hunters accuse people of being inconsistent when they blatantly haven't bothered to read their posts properly.

Natsku · 27/01/2018 07:22

Troll hunters have their place but too much is too much - save it for posts where people are getting sucked in to sharing very personal things or getting emotionally involved.

But I don't even place too much faith in a long posting history any more either, not after I was once (on a different forum) taken in by a troll who had put in a good year at least of posting normally and consistently before starting her great big sympathy-garnering troll that took us all in until some people started getting suspicious and started troll hunting and figured out the lies. It was really upsetting as I honestly believed this person was dying, and we were friends and talked lots so didn't want to believe the troll hunters but thank goodness they carried on before people got sucked into giving money and that kind of thing to the troll.

Pepperedbeef · 27/01/2018 07:26

This happened to me a few days ago. MNHQ were extremely fair and reinstated my thread, confirming they were trying to clamp down on Troll hunters. It does feel like some users believe they’ve been put in charge Hmm

Trueheart1 · 27/01/2018 07:43

Chugalug what happened to you is exactly what I mean, the troll hunters will discourage anyone from posting.

Natsku, I am sorry that you came across such a disturbed person.

Peppered Beef, I completely agree with you. Why do troll hunters think they are running the show?

OP posts:
TheStoic · 27/01/2018 07:48

If people weren’t so thick, troll hunting wouldn’t be necessary.

Honestly, how could anyone have thought that thread was legitimate? It beggars belief.

NotYetMadeYourMindUp · 27/01/2018 07:54

Trolling is ruining the whole of mumsnet.

It's the only site over ever been on where some loons think "troll hunting" is worse than trolling.

Trueheart1 · 27/01/2018 07:54

Stoic, that is exactly my point. We are not all "so thick". Some of us might like to give it the benefit of the doubt, some might think it is fantasy and enjoy it. I liked reading that thread because of other contributors sharing their experiences with former owners.

The thread was ruined by people like you who think you know better than all us thickos and feel the need to point out how clever you are on every thread.

The reason you cannot use the report button and leave the thread alone is that you don't care about people being suckered, you care about showing how superior you are.

OP posts:
TheStoic · 27/01/2018 07:58

Well, clearly the ‘troll hunters’ DID know better. And they usually do. I have more respect for the trolls than for the simpletons who hang off their every word. It is embarrassing to watch.

So true.
