AIBU Trollhunting is ruining AIBU

I understand troll hunting if the OP is giving dangerous advice. However, increasingly every single poster is being grilled by troll hunters about every aspect of their post. It makes a thread hard to follow and really boring to read.

I don't understand why the troll hunters do it, there is an easy to use report button. I have read several threads in the last week where the OP was subjected to constant snide comments about the veracity of their post. I think if these troll hunters persist then people won't want to post at all.

The discussion on the thread has been centred around the idea of “Elders” being reminded it is not good form to derail threads, merely to show what they regard as their forum muscle.

IMightMentionGriddlebone · 01/02/2018 13:17

Yes, I know you weren't literally referring to my actual age. As I said before: ' I'd describe it as random mumsnetters reacting to your comment'.

IMightMentionGriddlebone · 01/02/2018 13:18

Oh, and what did you expect to happen when you did that?

Bigfatchips · 01/02/2018 13:50

"Tbf I don't think MN is anywhere near as cliquey as days of old. Probably because many of the oldies have either left or have been banned."

or namechanged! Whenever there's a "How long have you been on Mumsnet thread?" I'm staggered at how many people have been here 10 years or more.

But name changing is absolutely one of the main reasons for the change of feel to the site.

Bigfatchips · 01/02/2018 13:56

Completely lost on the side conversation going on with RoseWhiteTips now.

Perhaps this is where a Reddit style format might actually be useful Grin. So that those who want to say "Oh hi Rufus, funny seeing you here - hope your piles aren't so bad now" can reply directly to Rufus's comment without derailing the thread. And anyone else who is invested in Rufus's piles can join that little chain while op and the others are still talking about the main topic?

Just a thought.

RedDogsBeg · 01/02/2018 14:11

When couldn't you name change on MN? You've certainly been able to for all the years I've been on here.

Bigfatchips · 01/02/2018 14:16

Who are you asking RedDogsBeg?

Name changing has always been allowed.

Trueheart1 · 01/02/2018 14:18

I see the idea of an "elders" section is not popular. To clarify I was not implying that the contributors had to be older. For instance a 24 year old with 5 years posting would be in the 5 year section.

OP posts:
RedDogsBeg · 01/02/2018 14:22

I was asking you Big as you said that name changing is absolutely one of the reasons for the change in feel of the site, but as it has always been the case you could name change I'm not sure how those two statements tally up. Unless you are saying the name changing feature is now being used and abused far more?

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 01/02/2018 14:29

People have always NC. In some ways I think it helps the site not become too cliquey in a way. Like Pagwatch said earlier we should be being nice to everyone. Can be hard at times but it's something we should all strive to do.

paxillin · 01/02/2018 14:39

What a silly analogy. This is not a drinking den.

Read the threads posted before and after the plonk is on the table kids' bedtime and you will see it is a drinking den. MNHQ have 3 taps: hot water, cold water, gin.

Christinayangstwistedsista · 01/02/2018 14:40

I think name changing is one of the biggest problems on here. If you don't want personal details on here or you don't want things you have said to follow you around then don't post them. It's much easier to be a total arse when you can just name change and start afresh

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 01/02/2018 14:45

People NC for other reasons than solely being an arse.

RedDogsBeg · 01/02/2018 14:46

It's not the name changing that's the problem it's the abuse of the option and that should/could be easily remedied, MNHQ receive reports of a goady or nasty post/poster and they look to see if it's been deliberately done under a name change and at the bare minimum remove that poster's facility to name change.

Christinayangstwistedsista · 01/02/2018 14:49

Red

I agree

I would like to think that anyone that does NC just to be a twat and then NC back to their usual name would be dealt with appropriately by MNHQ.

Bigfatchips · 01/02/2018 14:55

Yes, the name changing facility is being used more. I use it all the time now! Hardly ever used to - only the itchy fanny threads and the like.

People are more aware that they can and will be discussed in the tabloids and on other sites like the Reddit spin off.

So they name change more frequently. Infact, Justine & Co. have encouraged name changing as a way of getting around the Daily Mail problem.

There are fewer and fewer recognisable names on here.

I said that it had changed the feel of the site but I didn't say whether I thought that was a good thing or a bad thing.

Christinayangstwistedsista · 01/02/2018 14:57

Great

I think that's a tad optimistic

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 01/02/2018 15:16

Can we not discuss my piles please

Christinayangstwistedsista · 01/02/2018 15:17

Why not?

Serves you right for not name changing

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 01/02/2018 15:19

christina

It would be fair if id ever discussed my piles on mumsnet Grin

Erm, I did say that people who know each other shouldn't overwhelm a thread so whilst I'm grateful for all the people saying 'well yes but as long as they don't derail the thread' I'm not sure why it's being couched as being a different view.

Btw if this was a drinking den it wouldn't be an analogy, it would be a comparison.

RedDogsBeg · 01/02/2018 17:29

Trouble is Pagwatch in the majority of instances they do overwhelm the thread and it can be very jarring in the middle of a thread to see a conversation totally out of context to the thread. Rarely is it just two posters just saying "Hi" it tends to go into "how are you/how is/where have you been/what have you been doing?" and on and on, then other posters join in and the thread veers off topic, it can't be great for the OP of the thread either who is being treated as an irrelevance at this point.
