AIBU Trollhunting is ruining AIBU

I understand troll hunting if the OP is giving dangerous advice. However, increasingly every single poster is being grilled by troll hunters about every aspect of their post. It makes a thread hard to follow and really boring to read.

I don't understand why the troll hunters do it, there is an easy to use report button. I have read several threads in the last week where the OP was subjected to constant snide comments about the veracity of their post. I think if these troll hunters persist then people won't want to post at all.

Many MN changes were first suggested by individual posters, @RoseWhiteTips. Several things are longstanding ideas so far turned down, such as a no-name-change topic and an "ignore poster" button. Others have happened, such as the removal of user1928374675893, the @ callout and the introduction of a sporner corner.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 31/01/2018 15:40

MNHQ have said more than once that they don't ban for continuously reporting, they've also said that there would be more to it for someone who did report a lot and were banned.

RoseWhiteTips · 31/01/2018 15:42

I think the name changing thing is odd. On other sites, this would unacceptable. It lends itself to abuse, frankly.

Lying add the place-markers, especially those who just do a ".", and the far too important to read the whole thread or even the Op's updates posters onto the list and it's a circle of hell.

On the subject of place-markers KateMumsnet, it would be good if you could delete them it is not necessary and at times in very poor taste.

PerfumeIsAMessage · 31/01/2018 15:59

Oopsy, did you mean to namechange and then agree with RoseWhiteTips, er, RoseWhiteTips?

Greensleeves · 31/01/2018 16:00

LyingWitch I think I am one of those posters you despise above all others

I have namechanged and posted "joke" threads several times, hamster casserole etc, and I am sure some posters think "she's a troll, why isn't she banned"

the thing is years ago when the site was much smaller (sorry) lots of regular posters did this and it was generally found funny and didn't upset anyone. It wasn't perceived as threatening. The tone of the site has changed and the troll/trollhunter problem is so prevalent now. I don't think I had realised how much it had changed until now.

Rosetips whoops! 😂

Greeny was it you had the one about the cake in the bin?

Christinayangstwistedsista · 31/01/2018 16:10

Oh dear, awkward

Christinayangstwistedsista · 31/01/2018 16:11

How did I manage to miss a thread about a hamster casserole?

Greensleeves · 31/01/2018 16:11

yes cake in the bin was me

but it wasn't supposed to be a "goady fucker" thing to upset or threaten anyone, which is probably how it would be perceived now. I always owned up to mine and never thought I'd upset people.

Bluedoglead · 31/01/2018 16:14

I thought it was funny

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 31/01/2018 16:14

Greensleeves, No, jokey threads are fine - even CFs are fine by me (even though I don't like the threads much). The thread that I have in mind would be the one that was "AIBU to think there's no excuse for anybody to have a messy house" - and the OP, in the first paragraph, said she'd name-changed because she knew she'd be slated as it was a controversial thread and she knew it would upset some posters.

If I'd had access to the 'big red button' at that moment, she'd have been banned. That thread caused so much misery.

A jokey thread though, change name as often as you like and bring it on. :)

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 31/01/2018 16:15

I do not know what is funny about a cake in a bin

What is wrong with you people!!

RedDogsBeg · 31/01/2018 16:15

You're right Greensleeves a small site has a certain tone set by the dominant core posters, the bigger the site becomes the more the tone becomes diluted. Newer posters don't, and can't be expected to, get the in jokes that were once prevalent.

In a number of ways I think the increase in the size of the site and those posting on it has improved it, in some ways it hasn't but nothing stands still.

Greensleeves · 31/01/2018 16:16

Oh, OK! I'll bugger off then Grin. I agree with you about the cowardly namechangers who want to insult people.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 31/01/2018 16:17

RedDogsBeg, I don't like the placemarkers either. Particularly the ones who do it on 'break-up' threads where the OP is in bits. It's just so arrogant and disrespectful.

On 'nothing' threads I guess it doesn't matter, irksome though it is to see it on a thread.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 31/01/2018 16:20

lying

Well especially as you can put it on your watch list

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 31/01/2018 16:24

This is true,Rufus. Perhaps some posters don't know about that - or just want it in their TIO? On sensitive threads though it's just awful.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 31/01/2018 16:31

Greensleeves, I'm now quite intrigued about the hamster casserole and the reasons why you threw a cake in the bin...? Shock

Now one of my cakes would be quite understandable. Grin

FarseAboutAce · 31/01/2018 16:31

I blame Hully.

If she hadn't posted about spoons and threatened to KILL her neighbours it would all be sweetness and light on here.
