AIBU Trollhunting is ruining AIBU

I understand troll hunting if the OP is giving dangerous advice. However, increasingly every single poster is being grilled by troll hunters about every aspect of their post. It makes a thread hard to follow and really boring to read.

I don't understand why the troll hunters do it, there is an easy to use report button. I have read several threads in the last week where the OP was subjected to constant snide comments about the veracity of their post. I think if these troll hunters persist then people won't want to post at all.

OP posts:

I've name changed on this
I'm a new poster never on MN before
I'm gonna get flamed.

Yawn.

ShatnersWig · 29/01/2018 17:00

I still don't see why MNHQ can't introduce what most other forums have, whereby next to the poster's name it shows the date they joined (and sometimes the number of postings they've made). Then even if someone name changes you can see if they've been here for a day, a month, five years. If you see something which is controversial or could be seen as goady or typical Daily Mail journo fodder you can then look to see if the poster has been here for one day or one year and decide whether it's likely to be troll or not.

paxillin · 29/01/2018 17:07

Yes, the "will get flamed for this" come in several flavours of irritating, Rufus.

There is the would-be-revoluzzer who needs to hear how out-there they are when they say "I'll get flamed for this, but I don't like Boden" (answer: are you me, OP?). There is the right-on one wishing to shock "my DS has pink wellies" (answer: well done you, OP). And of course the nasties who post racist and disablist hate crap with the "flamed for it" preamble.

"This may be outing...

"I have a job and a son at school and I own a car blah blah blah..."

Well fuck me, it MUST be you Angela from 15 High Street, Bedhampton!

RedDogsBeg · 29/01/2018 17:14

I've looked at the MNTrolls site and the 'posting stuff they can't on MN anymore' seems to be mean tearing current MN posters to shreds or mocking, sneering and laughing at them, I'm pleased that MN is unwelcoming for that level of vitriol against posters.

Like Janey I don't see the point of the MNTrolls site, initially it was set up to discuss the fall-out of the D&C debacle, then it appeared to morph into 'Spot the Trolls on MN', (which is of benefit to whom?) and finally into the current incarnation of 'Which MN poster shall we eviscerate today'.

As Lying said report the Trolls then leave MNHQ to deal with the thread(s) as they choose - their site their decision.

Or after 20 odd pages I don't want to dripfeed but. This may be outing. That's more than irritating. I had sex and didn't use a contraceptive could I be pregnant. Confused Didn't your Mother tell you anything dear.

paxillin · 29/01/2018 17:17

I always wonder about outing, @etap. I think a "SIL has come for a week and her DS bit the cat" is the most outing sort of thread, albeit only if SIL is on here..

RedDogsBeg · 29/01/2018 17:18

pax any poster who replies with "Are you me, OP?" should be banished forever.

paxillin · 29/01/2018 17:21

Or be called RedDogsBegWhoThinksSheIsPaxillin for a while as a punishment @RedDogsBeg Grin.

I must be terribly naive, but I'm still not really sure what trolling actually means?? It is the often unnecessary hostility that I find annoying sometimes. And the sideline spats that often stem from that.
As for name changing, I think sometimes it is necessary. I've not been on MN for relatively long, but have found it entertaining at times, and really helpful at putting the odd personal dilemma into perspective. I actually got 'spotted' by a couple of friends, which amusing as it was, made it such that I felt I couldn't post another personal dilemma, under my 'real' MN name! I'm sure most of us that have done it, have done it for a genuine reason.

paxillin · 29/01/2018 17:32

I know my deletion score. 3 posts for quoting something someone else had said (which got deleted) and one thread for TAAT ('twasn't and I do bear a grudge). I shall go and polish my halo.

Sparklingbrook · 29/01/2018 17:34

One deletion here. For sarcasm. Hmm

I have always said that name changing should be allowed but more restricted.

Estellanpip · 29/01/2018 17:35

Tbf some of the most popular threads are a right load of shit but I never see anyone troll hunting on them. People just go along with it, possibly because the poster is living in fantasy land rather having nefarious intentions.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 29/01/2018 17:41

Or possibly because some of us have just spotted and hidden them at once, Estellanpip. The fantasy threads are just that. I prefer better-written fiction so I hide those and go back to my Agatha Christie's... now she really knew how to grip an audience. Grin

ChristmasTablecloth · 29/01/2018 19:37

I reckon 90% of posters who have been here 5 years plus hide or scroll past 90% of troll posts, including the cheeky fuckers and the regulars who just post about the same subject on a loop.

I'm surprised that some on Reddit have the energy to monitor Mumsnet to be honest, it's not like they're saying anything that lots of us don't already know. I suppose there must be a big element of back patting in it.

That hq still wholly rely on members to report iffy posts and apparently don't have any sort of proactive moderators after 15 years and a steadily increasing number of trolls is pretty baffling.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 29/01/2018 19:42

I've just spied a misplaced apostrophe in my post... it's Christies of course!

Christmas it doesn't baffle me. The premise of MN was always a help and support board for parents and they're managing 'by exception'. I would too. No way would I stump up for moderators to post amongst us and keep the peace on an adult chatboard. When posts are bad enough, they're reported. Mumsnet is much more of a business now than it ever was and that must come with some changed perspective.

I'd absolutely ban the name-changes to be goady posters though. No excuses and no second chances, they'd be out.

Christinayangstwistedsista · 29/01/2018 20:10

I've only had one deletion, must try harder

Anyway, on to more important matters, I think I am getting toothache

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 29/01/2018 20:11
