AIBU Trollhunting is ruining AIBU

Trueheart1 · 26/01/2018 22:47

I understand troll hunting if the OP is giving dangerous advice. However, increasingly every single poster is being grilled by troll hunters about every aspect of their post. It makes a thread hard to follow and really boring to read.

I don't understand why the troll hunters do it, there is an easy to use report button. I have read several threads in the last week where the OP was subjected to constant snide comments about the veracity of their post. I think if these troll hunters persist then people won't want to post at all.

OP posts:
bummymummythefirst · 29/01/2018 13:25

I have to say, more than a few people were really cunty to me a couple of weeks ago. I won't ever post for advice on Mumsnet again. Which is sad as I've have for over 10 years.

OOOOOOOOOOO · 29/01/2018 14:44

Troll hunters play right into trolls hands.

I agree but I think what trolls really, really like is when they get the troll hunters AND the troll hunter hunters arguing with each other on their threads. Its why so many troll threads are written to fall right on the boundary as to what is believable.

Troll hunters should never comment on a thread and should report their concerns
AND Troll hunter 'hunters' should never comment on a thread and should just report their concerns.

Gorygloria · 29/01/2018 14:48

Spot on OOOOOOOOOOO

I think the troll hunters engage because it’s a bit of sport, so it does undermine their mission somewhat

Coconutspongexo · 29/01/2018 15:05

I’ve never seen MN say someone is genuine.

hungryhippo90 · 29/01/2018 15:09

Yes it’s ruining it, I wish that I could enjoy the enjoyable troll posts without all the “if it’s true” I flipping loved the old house owners guests one... and poof it seemed to disappear!

Sparklingbrook · 29/01/2018 15:09

I think that would be in reply to a report Dippingmytoesin? Although I think I have seen on threads MNHQ saying that the OP checks out as far as they can tell and for trollhunters/spotters to pack it in.

NotYetMadeYourMindUp · 29/01/2018 15:13

The faith some of you have in MNHQ is cute.

ExConstance · 29/01/2018 15:14

If I see a troll hunting post I report it, if we all did that it would be reduced. If you are genuine it is very upsetting to be accused of being a troll, as happened to me some years ago when I was posting about a very difficult time in my life.

NotYetMadeYourMindUp · 29/01/2018 15:20

Maybe you should report the huge numbers of obvious troll threads instead.

RoseWhiteTips · 29/01/2018 15:21

CotswoldStrife

I can see a thread in AIBU now that I think is goady/untrue. OP hasn't been back and it's had a lot of posters. So there you go, the troll hunters haven't stopped that one unfortunately

I do hope you have reported it, in that case, as people are being encouraged to do on this thread. Instead, you seem to be inviting others to starting speculating. Hmm

RoseWhiteTips · 29/01/2018 15:39

...to start

Coconutspongexo · 29/01/2018 15:41

MNHQ don’t even have issue with pro ana posts so I don’t trust they have an issue with trolls.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 29/01/2018 16:08

I'll be honest, there's not a single CF thread that I've liked, it's grown like topsy because posters are egged on and waving pom-poms all over the place. I've hidden them all.

The threads that I don't believe, I may/may not report - but then I'll hide it so it doesn't keep needling me.

The troll-hunters are really on a hiding to nothing because far from being 'appointed' to the task, they're going against a stated guideline (and one that has dire consequences). But they do it in short of a 'little huddle' and it looks very obvious. I'm sure it's sport for them - and it's sport for the troll-wannabee trying to circumvent them. Let's face it, it's not difficult because they have a step-by-step 'How To Do It' in the form of troll-hunters' talking about their exploits all the time.

I've been derided for my foolishness in thinking that Mumsnet and MNTrolls is the same thing on Reddit but firstly, since Mumsnet seems to be the major topic of conversation I could be forgiven that - and second, I'm not the one(s) telling trolls-in-waiting everything they need to know and giving them SO much oxygen on two sites now. I'll stick with my little grey cells any day of the week quite frankly, as lacklustre as some might perceive them.

So if MNHQ lets pro-ana posts and troll posts stand then, with respect, that is their circus and monkeys to manage. Once said posts are reported, our job is done. Anything else is just attention-seeking in its own right. I've done it myself before anybody accuses me of being on my high horse but it's pointless.

The faith some of you have in MNHQ is cute.

That is a breathtakingly arrogant post, however do you find the gall to post it, you know, this NOT being your site and all?

You, I and at least half the posters posting could stop posting cold turkey and it probably wouldn't cause as much as a ripple. Some posters have such delusions of their irreplaceability and importance on the site. I'm under no such illusion myself.

paxillin · 29/01/2018 16:35

Use the whole quote, @JaneyEJones. I said all of those groups you quoted have been accused of spoiling MN. Trollhunters belong to the rule breakers, which is one of the groups accused of spoiling MN. They in turn think the clipboard wavers are tedious.

Long-standing, cynical posters are often the target of "they spoil it for us" threads, as are new posters crashing around blindly and whining about the swear words.

We just have to live together, since a huge site such as MN will never just attract one sort. Actually, that is the whole point of it for many.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 29/01/2018 16:38

Me too, Dixie, they are poison and I loath them more than anything else on Mumsnet.

I've said quite often that MNHQ could pop onto a thread and unmask the namechanger-just-to-be-a-goady-fucker with, "Hi everybody, this thread's goady-fuckery has been brought to you by LyingWitch who has name-changed just for the purpose. We'll be suspending her name-changing rights for a long while"...

That would b excellent! Grin

Indeed Dixie, they believed the salesperson who sold them their 'invisibility cloak' not realising that they've been had. They are so, so obvious. I see them and just smile to myself.

"Namechanged because this is controversial" (usually read: racist, misogynist, disablist, snobbish...) should mean automatic switch back to usual, nice name.

Coconutspongexo · 29/01/2018 16:55

Janey you clearly frequent MNTrolls maybe you’ve realised most the posts aren’t troll hunting anymore and it’s drinking threads or people posting stuff they can’t on here anymore because it’s not the most welcoming friendly place here

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 29/01/2018 16:55

pax

I hate 'i know im going to get flamed for this' and then an insipid post

Oh for goodness sake...stop bigging up your part Hmm
