To think Nicola is just grasping at straws

Banning the union flag so it's only shown once a year. Surely the failing SNP is loosing popularity and she's just getting ever more ridiculous.

OP posts:

I always think the vile personal attacks against Nicole Sturgeon reek of both desperation and misogyny.
She’s an intelligent, accomplished woman, a skilled politician who often runs circles round Westminster politicians. Rather than acknowledge that, far too many people attack her physical appearance- and that’s not acceptable. Resort to those sort of attacks and you’ve already lost your argument IMO.

Bobson · 26/01/2018 18:21

I think some people dislike a woman being in charge and feel they can heap the kind of abuse on them that they would never target at a man.

Fekko · 26/01/2018 18:23

That’s pretty much par for the course for female politicians. Remember the ‘battle of the legs’ or the slagging off that Mo Molem got about her appearance (before she announced that she had cancer and had piled on weight and lost her hair).

ChickenVindaloo2 · 26/01/2018 18:27

Donald Trump comes in for a lot of personal abuse. And he's a male politician. So did Tony Blair.

Fekko · 26/01/2018 18:29

I’d say most female ones do and some male ones do too.

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 26/01/2018 18:33

Lorraine Kelly is not from Dundee. Not really the point of the thread but it's not accurate.

paniconthestreetsofdreams · 26/01/2018 18:35

Love her and can't wait to be independent but this isn't true and a retraction has been printed.

Many of the replies here make me even more determined that the union needs to end.

🇬🇧 is an embarrassing symbol and i wish it was banned.

paniconthestreetsofdreams · 26/01/2018 18:36

Every time Scotland, the Scottish Government or Nicola Sturgeon is praised for doing something well (better performing NHS, better child health policy) the Tory papers dig up some rubbish to activate their Union Jack worshipping core base. Just a distraction.

This with bells on.

BoneyBackJefferson · 26/01/2018 18:40

She has a fuckload of more important things to be bothering with.

Yes and like many politicians she is good at manipulating the news to get what she wants.

My first thought is what is she pushing through that she doesn't want us to know about.

Luckymummy22 · 26/01/2018 19:08

Miss Kelly you see a hell of a lot of Irish flags in Glasgow too. Strange when it’s Scotland and not ROI

ratspeaker · 26/01/2018 21:51

Suprise suprise. Daily Mail doesn't check the truth before printing stories.

Even more suprising they admitted it and apologised. Sort of.

durgha · 27/01/2018 01:32

The original post has been found to be untrue. Ms Sturgeon did not ban the Union flag. The Daily Mail managed to squirt out a wee apology since they were caught lying. Those of you who dislike the SNP, why can't you accept that this time, your ire is unfounded? I don't care if you don't rate the SNP, but I do care if you try to convince other people that lies are true. And I think Lettuce and Bobson have a point. Most of the naysaying babblers on this thread come across as a bit misogynistic.

Toadinthehole · 27/01/2018 05:52

For God's sake.

Of course the Queen is always going to approve a policy her elected Scottish government, because anything else would be undemocratic. Whether it's what she wants is irrelevant. Alex Salmond knows this. The man is the same shitstirring gobshite that he's always been.

makeourfuture · 27/01/2018 08:04

Her Brexit stance is spot on.

ATownCalledGallus · 27/01/2018 08:17

Yes, durgha, I'd be so impressed and heartened if just this once, one of the Nicola-haters came back to the thread and conceded that ok yes, this time they got it wrong. For the sake of truth.

Anyone ... OP ...??!

But I suspect there are things more important to them than the truth.

k2p2k2tog · 27/01/2018 08:32

🇬🇧 is an embarrassing symbol

Banning the Union Flag.... oh dear.

trixymalixy · 27/01/2018 08:40

What a shame that the daily mail etc have fucked up what is actually a very interesting story by trying to pin it on Nicola. Had they said SNP instead of Nicola the story then it would have been a different matter.

As far as I can gather the protocol was changed in 2010 in a sly sleekit underhand way. Note how carefully Salmond chooses his words. He doesn't say the queen agreed to the removal of the union flag. The queen agreed to the flying of the royal standard. I suspect she was led to believe both would be flown.

The interesting question is why it has taken until now for the official guidance to be updated. Why didn't they want anyone to know in 2010? I suspect they knew how petty and parochial they knew it would make them look and didn't want it known before the referendum.

It's pathetic and reinforces my disdain for the nationalists.

zsazsajuju · 27/01/2018 09:50

It might have been an interesting story in 2010. But obviously didn’t.

I’m afraid the only thing pathetic and invoking disdain on this thread are the delusional anti-snp who will spin any nonsense to tell their story of evil nationalists. I wonder what their real motivation is - misogyny I agree but I think there’s racism in the mix too.

ATownCalledGallus · 27/01/2018 09:52

Trixy, a referendum wasn't even on the cards in 2010 ...

paniconthestreetsofdreams · 27/01/2018 10:10

Banning the Union Flag.... oh dear.

I think you mean oh please.

000bourneFarm · 27/01/2018 10:12

As long as they are paper and not plastic ones, I'm not fussed.

Fekko · 27/01/2018 10:14

I’m a very vocally proud Scot and love to see the 3 flags flying. I can’t be arsed with all the anti Union Jack sentiment.

Scots have contributed a hell of a lot to the union - shit loads really. I’m very proud of that.

trixymalixy · 27/01/2018 10:15

Oh come on gallus, get real, Alex Salmond will have been planning for a referendum way before 2010. Scottish independence is his one goal in life.

What's interesting about this story is not the flags aspect but the lack of consultation and transparency over this change. What else has Salmond sneaked through on the sly that we don't know about yet?

If you are not concerned about that then you really should be.

Thank god Scots were not stupid enough to vote for separation and let Salmond have free rein.

The nats make a big thing about voters being far more engaged in politics since the referendum. Their problem is that it's not just the yes voters that are switched on. No voters are too and we're in the majority and they are less likely to get away with this kind of bullshit than they were in 2010.

SusanneLinder · 27/01/2018 10:19

Well turned out to be a non thread as isnt true that Nicola banned Union Flag.
Regarding GE election, SNP lost seats because many Independence supporters voted for Corbyn rather as they thought a Labour government might suit them better as they wanted rid of Theresa May. Huge surge for Tories, due to not wanting another Indyref.
In Council elections in Scotland a month previously, the SNP lost control of one Council as Labour and Tories went into coalition, to keep the SNP out. Still very popular though and got control of Glasgow and many other Councils even as a minority.
I did exit polls so spoke to a LOT of voters up here of different political persuasions.
