Banning the union flag so it's only shown once a year. Surely the failing SNP is loosing popularity and she's just getting ever more ridiculous.

K2p2k2tog - you are so good at a fake Scottish accent you should write for the Daily Mail. Maybe you already do.

Fekko · 24/01/2018 09:12

Where I work (not in Scotland) there’s a very fancy Italian coffee shop that sells all sorts of expensive coffees and delicacies. This includes tunnock tea cakes! The nice owner gives me some now and then (when I press my nose up against the glass) as he knows I like them and was very excited when I first saw them.

Fekko · 24/01/2018 09:13

(Soda- she sounds like my brother actually).

k2p2k2tog · 24/01/2018 09:13

Yes but Fekko the SNP are trying to rebrand it as the English flag. Which it's obviously not.

Everything they do is about sending messages to Scottish people about how we're different, separate, have our own language, culture, customs, and how those people over the border are so very, very different from us. Don't fool yourself that they're really interested in anything other than independence. At any cost.

She's ramping up the pressure as she's committed herself to deciding when she's going to put us through the hell of IndyRef2 by the summer.

k2p2k2tog · 24/01/2018 09:14

I don't need a fake Scottish accent - I have an authentic one :-)

londonrach · 24/01/2018 09:15

She sounds very childish and petty

Fekko · 24/01/2018 09:17

She can bugger off then. I loathe the braveheart/theme park/glocca mora image of Scotland.

HamishBamish · 24/01/2018 09:20

If it's being reported accurately then I think it's very childish. We are still part of the UK and voted to confirm that. These stories are very damaging to the relations between Scotland and England in particular. There is still a lot of resentment after the referendum despite us voting to remain part of the UK.

I wish NS would stop banging the independence drum. We voted to remain and surely that should be enough.

dementedma · 24/01/2018 09:21

the MAJORITY of Scots who voted to be in the union should all fly their own union flags. many of my Scottish friends, like the pp above are angry that the Saltire has been hijacked by the SNP.

A friend of mine is a very senior military office. There was a big event at Edinburgh Castle and Alex Salmond was one of the VIP guests. Beforehand he demanded that the Saltire flew over the castle to welcome the overseas VIP guests. When he arrived he saw the Union Flag flying and was furious. Insisting my friend come to the window he pointed at the flag, had a rant and demanded to know why the Saltire wasn't flying as instructed. Coolly, said friend replied " But it is flying Sir. If you look closely you will see it forms part of the Union Flag."

Absolutely true story - had it verified by other attendees. Alex was, to say the least, not amused.

Basseting · 24/01/2018 09:26

The SNP (like the English Govt to be fair) have form for slipping stuff like this out into the press to distract from the real issues:

Scottish NHS on it's knees. Childrens wards being closed. Waiting lists horrendous (patients being sent to England for treatment too)

Attainment gap in education the widest its ever been. Slashing of funding for FE colleges. Scottish Curriculum for 'excellence' widely derided by educational experts and providers.

Economy tanking even faster than UK economy in general.
Oil in particular (which was supposed to be the pot of gold which would make Scotland impervious to all woes)
Failure to be taken seriously in Europe re staying in EU after Brexit.

Oh, yes, and there was that failed Independence Referendum (which they will rerun as soon as she feels there is a snowflakes chance it will go Yes this time). That is the real bugbear and the reason the SNP have not concentrated properly on anything else for the last decade.

So yes, whinging on about flags is something the SNP do and will continue to do both because they really ARE that petty and because it is a handy smoke screen

Mrsmadevans · 24/01/2018 09:26

She has been out of the news for ages I wouldn't put it past her to have said this to get her uglymug in the papers.

ATownCalledGallus · 24/01/2018 09:27

What's the English Government, Bassetting? Where do they meet?

DameGlitterSparkles · 24/01/2018 09:28

She's such a wanker

youcanonlylaugh · 24/01/2018 09:31

I don't see the point in this but Nicola is great otherwise.

ATownCalledGallus · 24/01/2018 09:33

Ugly, odious, wanker - attacking people on a personal level rather than attacking their policies does nothing for your arguments.

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 24/01/2018 09:35

She has a fuckload of more important things to be bothering with.

Agreed. And I wish she would bother with them for once.

Our economy is stagnating, education is a mess and the Scottish NHS is no better than the English/Welsh one, which seems to be the SNP government's only performance target.

And still, their primary concern is sticking one over the English and getting independence. Which we Scots have been making quite clear through the actual referendum and various polls and elections since, that we (the majority) do not want. We want Scotland functioning well, please.

We're stuck with this until the next Scottish elections at least, and I desperately hope the SNP are not able to form a government after that. For all our sakes.

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 24/01/2018 09:39

K2p2k2tog - you are so good at a fake Scottish accent you should write for the Daily Mail. Maybe you already do.

Sodabreadjam, why did you assume K2p2k2tog didn't have a Scottish accent?

This idea that people who don't support independence aren't really Scottish is despicable. Ignorant, socially damaging and one of the behaviours that shows up Scottish nationalism to be no different to any other kind of nationalism.

BitOutOfPractice · 24/01/2018 09:46

I think a Tunnocks Teacake ban could be the saving of the union. Surely the sensible Scots wont stand for that nonsense!

youcanonlylaugh · 24/01/2018 09:48

Ugly, odious, wanker - attacking people on a personal level rather than attacking their policies does nothing for your arguments.
Wink quite like your post then x

BitOutOfPractice · 24/01/2018 09:49

Bassetting in fairness most of those woes apply to England, Wales and NI too. Certainly the NHS and education system in crisis in England. Ditto the tanking economy. Ditto the not being taken seriously in Europe.

All with the added bonus of not having the "English Government" of which you speak

Viviennemary · 24/01/2018 09:50

I think it's quite funny. She only did it for a bit of mischief making IMHO. She knew the Daily Mail would be all over it. I'm not keen on her personally but she knows how to get the old Braveheart syndrome going.

sodabreadjam · 24/01/2018 09:53

The last change in flag flying protocol was in 2010 brought in by Alex Salmond with the agreement of the Queen. Seems like the Daily Mail, Telegraph etc. Just decided to become outraged today. www.alexsalmond.scot/press-releases/2018/1/24/flag-flying-policy

Whatatado · 24/01/2018 09:54

The SNP are a great government, and have the support of a lot of people in Scotland.

Is this a joke? The SNP lost a 3rd of their seats in the last election (2017). Hardly a vote of confidence!

ATownCalledGallus · 24/01/2018 09:55

youcanonlylaugh, I was repeating the terms that others on this thread have used to describe NS. Obviously.

FlyingElbows · 24/01/2018 09:56

Well here in the South West of Scotland the union flag has some unappealing connotations. The very last thing we need is people flying union flags. It's bad enough as it is!! Nobody Scottish will need that explained. An away an shite if ye 'hink oanywan is gieing up a tunnocks tea cake!!
