Have been seeing posts like this being thrown round on social media the past couple of days....am I the only one who thinks the whole world has gone bananas and we are now taking a huge step backwards???

To be furious?! Women's march?

Everything PositivelyPERF said.

Did anybody see the signs by the Cenotaph saying 'No country for old men'?

UpstartCrow · 23/01/2018 00:04

Lecturing women on a parenting forum about intersex disorders - as if we've never heard of such a thing - is ridiculous.

Yanbu, this is the logical end result of self identification. Facts become hate speech. Women lose the right to autonomy, we lose the right to free association, and its a breach of our basic human rights.

IfNot · 23/01/2018 00:04

God what a load of patronising stereotypical shite.
Black women are mainly worried about getting shot and "Native" Women are mainly worried about Mother Earth?
Latinas are all illegal and white women are all bimbos on Spring Break?
No. ALL women share certain struggles; equal pay, freedom from harassment, representation in politics, the massive numbers of deaths by domestic abuse. Women of colour, lesbian women, disabled women will have specific extra challenges it's true, but there are things that bind us together which are universal.
Men need to stop hijacking our shit and get their own march.

I don't think redsatinsheets is a TIM though
empowerforjustice.tumblr.com/post/156070072773/redsatinsheets-whats-real-interesting-about-u

I'm not on Tumblr so can't see all of their posts.

Nevertheless, I know quite a few natal (!) women (womben?) who are very supportive of the anti-radfems. It's easy to call them 'handmaidens' but they're much more thoughtful and critical than that. They are young and passionate about social justice and - to a woman - haven't experienced motherhood, though they've endured all the other sexist crap that woman is heir(ess) to. They see prejudice against their transitioning friends and get outraged at the lack of acceptance. Simple as.

Feminists accept transwomen!

They should have the same rights as everyone else.

Just not women's rights. Which are granted on the basis of their biology.

FurCoatFurKnickers · 23/01/2018 00:17

Me neither @bluescreen but the link to the comment I posted sounds a lot more like a woman than a TIM.

I agree with your post though, re: young and passionate but not yet experienced in terms of real life. I was like that once upon a time.

willstarttomorrow · 23/01/2018 00:19

No one seems to know what they are fighting for anymore, just that they feel they need to fight. I may be getting old (well actually I am) but the world feels more divisive and intolerant at times. Not, I hasten to add, the actual men and women I meet, know and love on a day-to-day basis who are largely liberal, tolerant and inclusive. Just the keyboard warriors and social media/famous attention seekers.

ginghambox · 23/01/2018 00:26

What did you think was going to happen?
It was always going to be hijacked by trans radicals , BLM extemist's and socialist nutters.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 23/01/2018 00:29

Not getting old at all

bluescreen · 23/01/2018 00:31

Feminists accept transwomen!
Er, yes, except they don't all. Germaine Greer famously wasn't cool with a transwoman being a fellow at Newnham back in the day. Lots of otherwise feminists aren't cool with trans athletes getting medals in eg weightlifting. Iranian women's sports teams are legendary.

They should have the same rights as everyone else.
They already do, except when it comes to reserved women's spaces.
Yeh, most women are totally cool with transwomen who pass or who are clearly trying to pass using women's facilities. (Because they are at much at risk in the men's room as we are.)
But a bit uncool when it's not.

Just not women's rights. Which are granted on the basis of their biology.
Yup. Agree with you here, which makes thee and me and most of us on this thread TERFS who should DIAF. Shock

misssmilla1 · 23/01/2018 00:33

I saw a wtf post yesterday on twitter from a 20 something old feminist saying that all old white feminists should 'step aside' (and by old it seemed to be anyone over 35...) as our opinions weren't valid and we were holding back the movement.

Whilst I understand that there is a need to be able to see viewpoints from others perspectives and acknowledge how environments have changed and that thinking changes with it, I find the 'step aside' thing horrific - surely this in itself is no better than these same people who accuse white cis women of being blind to what;s going on around them??

bluescreen · 23/01/2018 00:37

Age privilege. Wink

QuackPorridgeBacon · 23/01/2018 00:37

Ah yes, those that helped the movement gain our rights, should step aside. It’s a joke and I wouldn’t even call myself a feminist. I’m ashamed to say I’m in their age bracket. I’m 24. Blush

ohfortuna · 23/01/2018 00:38

general indifference from white cisgender women who only appear to care about themselves
cisgender women??
leave it out with cisgender bullshit for pity's sake, stop trying to fucking reclassify women

misssmilla1 · 23/01/2018 00:40

And that comment is all bollocks anyway. As a cis white woman in the US you're just as at risk of getting your affordable accessible healthcare slashed as any other group. Take into account the appalling rates of infant and mother mortality, lack of maternity pay and rights to go back to work and why do we assume we have the privilege?

And also MASSIVE generalization about all latinx being undocumented and black women' family being shot.

I HATE these generalizations and they abound - I've seen loads of "if you want to properly contribute as a cis white woman and not just ride your privilege, you should consider donating money / holiday time / vouchers etc to black / latinx women who don't have the privilege"

And here's the rub - surely if I assume all people of color work low paying jobs / don't have access to what I do, then aren't I making massive (wrong) assumptions about people based on their skin color? Doesn't the offer of money / time off in kind etc feel like a fuckin awkward thing based on the fact you're white and they;re not? Supposedly tho, this is my white privilege speaking (am happy to be educated otherwise but to me it feels more racist than anything)

FurCoatFurKnickers · 23/01/2018 00:42

@misssmilla1

I saw that too.

I have great respect for the contributions that many older women made to the feminist movement, at times when it was harder than I have ever experienced. It is also time for them to listen, to learn, to step aside

misssmilla1 · 23/01/2018 00:44

Yeah I was like "oh do fuck off love". Telling anyone to step aside whilst bleating about the need for intersectionality is hilarious (imo)

misssmilla1 · 23/01/2018 00:47

One thing I have noticed is that the same language on a lot of what I would call 'fringe' posts banging on about this stuff online is uncannily similar and there's a really odd feel to it. Whilst like attracts like, I'm actually quite suspicious, but can't work out why.

Is it so similar because its a very small echo chamber of people who somehow have just exploded to more mainstream? Have they all read the same 3 articles?

In some ways its really interesting as whilst the topic has changed they're all as batshit as some of the fringe extreme 80's wimminz stuff - heartening in a way that human nature doesn't really evolve

FurCoatFurKnickers · 23/01/2018 00:48

This is the tweet. Not many older (or younger) feminists agree with her funnily enough.

Quack Please don't apologise! This collective responsibility notion is odious. You aren't responsible for your generation any more than I am for the generation that's totally fucked up the planet.

Well, maybe I'm more responsible for the fucking up, what with driving a car and all.

I'm under 35, but am white and "read" as middle class - am I allowed to march? I'm mentally ill and on benefits if that helps?

TrinitySquirrel · 23/01/2018 00:50

I am genuinely terrified to ever have a daughter now. Sad

misssmilla1 · 23/01/2018 00:53

This bit from her twitter feed is gold:

"Because age tends to correlate with not being on board with progress, and older woman are specifically the ones who have been most vocal about standing in the way right now. Many, but not all"

Nice stereotyping!
