...to ask how you get out of bed in the morning?

Just that really. I mean how do you literally force yourself to get up? I snooze my alarm 5/6 times, feel terrible, start every day rushed and late. Each day I think it’ll be different but it never is. Sad desperate for strategies! This has only started in the last year or so - I used to be able to spring out of bed on the alarm. Is there anything that makes it easier?

I’m another who gets up immediately, as snoozing the alarm makes me feel worse, plus I am then rushing. I go into the kitchen and stick the kettle on/let the cat out, then use the loo and switch the shower on to heat while the kettle’s boiling, then make tea before getting in the shower. By the time I’ve had a shower I tend to feel more human, and there’s a cup of tea ready and waiting to drink which helps. My morning routine is so finely tuned that I know any dithering will make me late, so I just need to crack on with it.

kateandme · 22/01/2018 21:22

if ur struggling with your job is there anything else you could look forward to in the morning.a nice breakie for instance to come down to.just little things.
putting your phone on the other side of the room and setting the alarm.
try not to let your thoughts race to anxiety or internal conversation when you wake.let your mind ajust with nothingness if that makes sense.filling ur head with what ifs or conversationso fo a day you might not be looking forward to will just turn your body into more hideaway mode.
take a biiiig stretch and really believe "I got this!"
get a dog.just becaue everyone feels better with a dog to get up to hehe

Justabadwife · 22/01/2018 21:22

I hate the dark mornings.
So at the moment both mine and DHs alarms are set for 7, If I'm not feeling it (most mornings) I reset it for 7.30 and just snooze.
Then I hear dd getting up, and drag myself out of bed.

In the summer
In up and out of bed at about 6.30, I put washing on and out on the line before school.

Proseccoagain · 22/01/2018 21:22

Used to have radio alarm set to 6am when I worked, listen to radio about 10 minutes, get up and make tea for me and DH, back to bed, read and have tea while DH got showered. Get up and get ready for work, making sure teenage DC were up and getting ready for school. Now, thank the Lord, get up when I wake up, make tea, feed cats, take tea and newspaper back to bed for me and DH. Do puzzles and crossword in paper, have cuddle with cats who have joined us on the bed, look at phone, get up when I feel like it!

OrangeCatnip · 22/01/2018 21:22

Do you drink coffee? if you do STOP. it doesn't wake you up without a cost. it makes you wake up sort terms in exchange for messing with your circadian rhythms. stop drinking it and after a few days to get it our of your system you will feel a big difference.

NapQueen · 22/01/2018 21:23

I remind myself that if i get up.as soon as the alarm goes off I can have 30 mins to.myself before the kids wake. This is especially motivational when they have been little shits.

AethelflaedofMercia · 22/01/2018 21:23

I agree, out of bed as soon as the alarm goes off. Don't lie there thinking about it. I have everything ready the night before and follow the same breakfast, shower, dress routine every morning, so I can do it on auto pilot.

Don't allow too much time to get ready in the morning. 1. That's an extra half hour's sleep you could have had, and 2. The more time you have, the more time you have to faff about instead of just getting moving.

halfwitpicker · 22/01/2018 21:24

I always develop a crush on a colleague, so I spring out of bed in order to shower and dress nicely. The though of seeing him spurs me on.

MeadowHay · 22/01/2018 21:25

Job stress is probably making things worse, and if you feel constantly tired all day as well I'd be speaking to the GP as that could be a sign of depression, anxiety, vitamin deficiency, iron-deficiency anaemia, etc, so might be worth getting some bloods done.

I'm autistic and have always been a terrible sleeper, need loads of sleep or I feel tired all day, and awful at getting up in the mornings, especially when it's dark, and I'm very affected by the weather and get Seasonal Affective Disorder. So, I know how you feel!

Things that help me:

  • Lumie sunrise alarm clock. I actually just use the light feature on it, and put my noise alarm on my phone on my bedside table. The sunrise alarm clock is actually on DH's bedside table. For people with DPs who need to still sleep, could they try wearing a eye-mask? That way it shouldn't bother them (I have done this when DH was getting up very early with the light up alarm clock and I wanted to stay in bed).
  • Getting loads of sleep - so going to bed early. At the moment I have ill-health and cannot get up in the mornings or I'm physically very sick so I have an excuse to lay in, but before I used to get up for work at about 7.15am, I'd try and be asleep no later than 11.30pm which really meant I would need to be in bed before 11pm. It usually takes me around 30-60 minutes to fall asleep on a night, no matter how tired I am.
  • No screen time in the hour or so before bed (or limited at least!) so no browsing the internet on your phone/laptop/computer. The bright light from the screens affects your brain and keeps it awake.
  • No caffeine in the few hours before bed - I'm very caffeine intolerant. I won't have a cup of tea later than about 7pm. Caffeine stays in your system for about 6hours.
  • Not going to bed hungry, because otherwise I sometimes wake up in the night hungry and this disturbs my sleep even more.
  • If it's noisy I will go to sleep with ear plugs in. I have cheap memory foam ones from Ebay that are great.
  • Making sure the temperature of the room isn't too cold, and then I crank up the radiator as soon as I'm out of bed so it's warm when I'm getting changed.
  • If possible, DH bringing me breakfast in bed Blush. But that's asking too much for every day Grin.
ToothTrauma · 22/01/2018 21:25

I have a birdsong alarm. I also have lovely shower, skincare and makeup products which I look forward to using Smile

Oh and I love my job Grin

NoStraightEdges · 22/01/2018 21:25

We have the lumie too. I also like the sunset setting at bed time too. Helps with the circadian rhythm and all that. Smile

kaytee87 · 22/01/2018 21:25

It's the winter, I think it's normal to struggle. Try to get up straight away without snoozing at all. Think how nice it would be to have time to enjoy a nice tea/coffee in bed before really having to get up.

I have an 18 month old, can't remember the last time I even set an alarm. Him shouting 'mamamamamama' when he gets up kind of forces me out of bed.

expatinscotland · 22/01/2018 21:25

'Do you drink coffee? if you do STOP. it doesn't wake you up without a cost. it makes you wake up sort terms in exchange for messing with your circadian rhythms. stop drinking it and after a few days to get it our of your system you will feel a big difference.'

I noticed no difference at all. I love the taste of it and drink it in the mornings.

DropZoneOne · 22/01/2018 21:27

This is me too. Made worse by the fact that I have a sunrise alarm but haven't used it in ages! Will start again tomorrow

WeAllHaveWings · 22/01/2018 21:27

As soon as the alarm goes off turn on light, covers back then alarm off. I get up at 5:25, if I didn’t do that I’d fall asleep too easily.

HolyMountain · 22/01/2018 21:29

Alarm at 5.45.

I bounce out of bed , I’m an early riser anyway and like getting up.

greathat · 22/01/2018 21:31

Dawn simulating alarm clock really helps

BadPolicy · 22/01/2018 21:34

I use a smart light bulb instead of a sunrise alarm, but it makes it a lot easier.

LemonsLemonsLemonsLemons · 22/01/2018 21:35

Thank you for all these kind replies Smile I’ll be trying some of these.

Kateandme I’ll be trying the stretching - and maybe write out a reminder of things to look forward to in the morning.

...oh and yes, I do drink coffee. Quite a bit! I try not to drink it after about 4pm now but I definitely don’t think I’m ready to take on the mornings without it yet. Maybe I’ll try to cut back some more though.

PositivelyPERF · 22/01/2018 21:38

5.45! The thought of getting up at that time is enough to give me insomnia! 😱

FlibbertigibbetArmadillo · 22/01/2018 21:39

I got a dog

NotReadyToMove · 22/01/2018 21:39

I go to bed early so that 7.00am is my Natural waking up time.
It also means that I tend to wake up at 7.00am at weekends too but is so worth it.

gingerclementine · 22/01/2018 21:41

Get a cat. It will come and lie on your chest, purr in your ear, drool in your mouth and if you still refuse to get up, it will start piercing your lips and eyelids with its claws until you get up and feed it. Works every time for me.

NotReadyToMove · 22/01/2018 21:41

Oh a.so checking that there is no reason for you to struggle so much, aka check that you are not exhausted maybe because of aenemia, vitD deficiency (you know we all supposed to take some vit D in the winter?) etc...
