As above (at the risk of sounding tin foil hat) and if we're not, what the hell is going on in the world, what's causing it?

Surely the most important thing about communication is the ability to listen?

OP posts:
Falmer · 24/01/2018 13:10

special, "Denying education is abuse". There are many sen children who are not being educated at all or receiving less education than they should. Your comment shows that the authorities are being abusive then? Which was one of the reasons for my opening this thread.

There's listening and there's patiently letting a friend witter on about nonsense . You either gently point them to logic or you shrug and let them get on with it.
As for random posters on MN, waste my time by telling me the Earth is flat and I will not respect your opinion.
My opinion has been changed by a lot of things I have read in MN - the Earth being flat isn't one of them.

Steel does not need to reach melting point to become incapable of supporting a skyscraper. Especially after the building has already suffered structural damage by having a passenger jet fly into it.

I thought it was worse than that the steel support had fire retardant foam on them that the initial impact blasted off in some parts - thus giving the steel even less time to reach temperature that it could no longer support the floor above weights. There is footage showing one the the building twisting before it crashed down – and once one fall goes you’ve got the weight hitting next floor down on already weaken steel supports.

Plus the building wouldn’t have been built to withstand such an impact because it was the first time a plane was used in such a way.

If there is a conspiracy about 9/11 I don't think it the building collapsing or excuse sto start wars -
I think its the actions authorities took around air quality and its implications.

I don't think the flat earth idea was widely held by people in the past - pretty sure the Greeks and Egyptians knew eather wasn't flat. Wikipedia does seem to agree.

I don't get why they think everyone would lie and fake so much evidence about it.

Falmer · 24/01/2018 13:30

whoop, you think calling people nutjobs, mentally ill, etc is gently pointing them to logic? Hmm

OP posts:
specialsubject · 24/01/2018 13:40

Yes, denying education is abuse, whoever does it. Your point? Your logic?

whooptifeckindo · 24/01/2018 13:47

Never once called you a nut job or mentally ill. In fact, I have rigorously defended Home schooling.
I have views on all sorts of things that don't stand up to scrutiny. That said, I'm not a flat earther and think that holding that view shows very dodgy thinking. I get why people think 9/11 was an inside job or whatever . It is hard to get your head around a small group of people causing such a dreadful thing. but to avoid logic, reason and science to maintain that view is also pretty dodgy.
And then to say that anyone who uses logic reason and science to disprove a conspiracy theory is a sheep ... very questionable thinking.

Falmer · 24/01/2018 13:51

theEagle, you don't get why they think everyone would lie and fake so much evidence? We'll never know now, will we?

OP posts:
whooptifeckindo · 24/01/2018 13:52

Why do we have to prove a negative on this?

Falmer · 24/01/2018 13:59

squishy "I might want to put such a shocking theory to the test". Maybe they have? And again, we'll never know now, will we?

OP posts:

Certainly I think that the world has become more polarised and life is more complicated. I think that the advent of the internet and social media has added to that and it has also given a voice to a million conspiracy theories. People often take comfort in these conspiracies because they offer easy answers to complicated questions and in a sense make people feel in control in a chaotic world. I tend to think that there is too much division and incompetence even amongst people in the upper echelons of government for any kind of vast conspiracy to be true.

Let's face it, how many people have cast doubt on the intelligence of George W and yet, somehow some people believed that he was capable of being part of some vast 9/11 conspiracy? It's pretty ridiculous.

theEagleIsLost · 24/01/2018 14:19

I don't think it a rational view point – at least flat earth wise.

I get people lie and fake things but they usually have a motivation – they gain something by doing so there is an expected pay off for the effort.

Flat earth there is no obvious motivation to lie – most people can go through the day not caring about the earth shape – tech they used might need to know but most people can comfortably not care. Money nor maintaining reputations, nor maintaining power don’t seem to apply here

Then you need to consider the hugh number of people who work for different governments and companies who'd have to be involved everything from shipping, airlines and every pilot, satellite engineer weather forecasters and modellers, geologist, cartographers.

Apparently some work gone into how many people can know before there would be a leak - so for a decade 125 max can know anything about it before there are leaks.

whooptifeckindo · 24/01/2018 14:19

So if we don't prove the Illuminati or the Ant Hill Mob DIDN'T carry out the 9/11 attack, they must have done it. Hmm. Good clear thinking, there.

They really are, blackberry. BrianCox has some comical things to say about this.

user1471596238 · 24/01/2018 14:29

Don't forget that a lot of these conspiracy outlets rely on hits and the more hits they get, the more advertising they get. People are drawn towards outlandish stories even if deep down they might not believe it. Conspiracy theories are an industry unto themselves. What about all that planet Nbiru or whatever it was called? Even as NASA were pointing out that if we were really on a collision course with another planet we would be able to see it without a telescope, these conspiracy theorists were still trying to peddle it and will continue to do so because it generates hits and consequently money.

whooptifeckindo · 24/01/2018 14:31

Finland doesn't exist either. That's a brilliant one.

theEagleIsLost · 24/01/2018 14:36

It's odd because Saudi Araba is up to its neck in 9/11 not directly but indirectly -and money and geopolitical mean western governments still do business with them - they not hidden away there is evidence they fund such extremists.

It's like looking for a monster under the bed and ignoring the man with the bloody knife stood over you.

Anasnake · 24/01/2018 14:48

special, my point is simple. If they (there we go with the "they" again strawberriesSmile) if they can abuse children, what else are they capable of? It frightened me because what they did not only caused emotional harm but physical harm to other children. Then we discovered that there was not a damn thing we could do about it. Everyone knew, from the bottom (complaints dept, etc) to the top (ministers, deputy prime minister) Ds is now adult and can't even write, just about manages to sign his name when necessary. That was the catalyst, that's when I started questioning other things. Some too far fetched, some quite feasible.

Op, you and your son have been messed about and not given the support you need. That's shit. Sadly, I have my own experience of that. It has changed the way I see a lot of things.
However, it is illogical to strike out and assume conspiracy when, tragically, it has probably been shitty unprofessionalism and box ticking at fault - with catastrophic consequences for you and your son.
I'm really sorry you're going through this. I'm sorry that no one has been listening to your concerns. It really is local unthinking shitness that messes up lives, not grand conspiracies.

Falmer · 24/01/2018 15:20

whoop "so if we don't prove the illuminati, etc". No one has to "prove" anything, can't we just discuss and listen to different views from our own?

OP posts:
Falmer · 24/01/2018 15:22

Thanks whoop, I'll take that on board
