Okay not her racism, sexism and anti gay views. But there is so much explicit sex and nakedness on TV now, I do wish there was someone in the public eye speaking out against it.

Don't like the TV nudity much. Doesn't do anything for me. Usually just go on internet porn sites.

maddiemookins16mum · 18/01/2018 19:05

It's all about choice. I'm an adult so I will watch what I enjoy and as a sensible (most of the time) adult I'm capable of monitoring and censoring what my child watches. It's even easier to do this now with a quick google being able to tell you pretty much everything you need to know about most TV shows.
My DH and I love GoT, we wouldn't need MW to protest on our behalfs as to how awfully debauched it is (we already know).
It's not 1975 anymore.

My only niggle though is how much more 'unsuitable' some soap operas have become for family viewing. 'Back in the day', you could pretty much sit down and watch (or have on) Emmerdale Farm or Corrie and nothing really would be too outrageous, not anymore. Most of todays soaps should be on from 9pm onwards.
It's not all birthing lambs and sewing knickers in soaps these days.

crunchymint Hi crunchy, i'm genuinely interested in why you think Enoch Powell was a racist. I look forward to your reply.

YenneferOfVengerberg · 18/01/2018 19:13

Also, Mary Whitehouse's views were pretty integral to her campaigns. She campaigned against things like blasphemy and homosexuality, both in the media and in general. She also tried to censor and ban things like music and books. She tried to get a man sent to prison for publishing a poem FFS. She also wanted 70s Doctor Who banned for being too violent.

Would you extend your wanted ban to other things? Books, games, films etc? We live in an age where there is a bigger range of television than ever. Gone are the days of four channels. You can watch critically acclaimed dramas or trashy reality TV or anything in between wherever and whenever you want. You watch what you want, and I'll watch what I want. It's not hard.

MexicanBob · 18/01/2018 19:14

Am I really alone...

Yes.

MexicanBob · 18/01/2018 19:18

user14928 I'm genuinely interested in hearing why you think he wasn't.

crunchymint · 18/01/2018 19:22

Enoch Powell spoke out against immigration, and he also said the following -

“What’s wrong with racism? Racism is the basis of nationality.”

the country would “not be worth living in”, because “in 15 or 20 years' time the black man will have the whip hand over the white man”

He predicted race wars

OP posts:
user1492877024 · 18/01/2018 19:24

Was he wrong then?

user1492877024 · 18/01/2018 19:26

MexicanBob Fair comment. Because he never ever indicated in anyn way that he was.

NotACleverName · 18/01/2018 19:30

Was he wrong then?

Well, since black men do not have the whip over white men I'd say that yes, Enoch Powell was in fact wrong.

user1492877024 · 18/01/2018 19:34

NotACleverName I think we will just have to agree to disagree on that one as that is clearly your opinion only.

NotACleverName · 18/01/2018 19:42

I think we will just have to agree to disagree on that one as that is clearly your opinion only.

I'm sorry you disagree with reality, Nigel user.

user1492877024 · 18/01/2018 19:47

NotACleverName I'm sure that in your mind this is your version of reality. Lol.

JacquesHammer · 18/01/2018 20:09

Ah yes. He was bang on the money. The poor oppressed white man, huh?

🙄

Justanotherlurker · 18/01/2018 20:23

Well, since black men do not have the whip over white men I'd say that yes, Enoch Powell was in fact wrong.

South Africa is a pretty shit place at the minute...

Its quite funny watching white feminists group all white men together as one homogenous group, white working class boys are the worst performers in schools, I dont mind personally as my DS is brown, I know he gets treated better because of his skin colour than the many working class white boys in his school, more often than not by white females...

alfagirl73 · 18/01/2018 20:27

This thread makes me want to go binge-watch GoT or The Tudors! LOL! Grin

LyraPotter · 18/01/2018 21:18

@user1492877024 because fear and anxiety about nudity benefits no one. Naked bodies aren't shameful. You aren't less valuable or less important because someone has seen you naked. And hysteria about nudity has for a long time been used as a tool to oppress women and deny them proper education about their bodies.

I don't watch Naked Attraction because I think it's boring. That doesn't mean I think the world is going to hell in a hand basket because it exists. You are under no obligation to watch what doesn't interest you. But that doesn't mean that your preferences suddenly have the weight of moral laws.

BattleCuntGalactica · 19/01/2018 15:44

Good lord.

Anyone who's read Enoch Powell's Rivers of Blood speech and makes the statement that he wasn't racist, is in fact a complete idiot.

QuiQuaiQuod · 19/01/2018 16:19

Yes, as individuals we can turn off the offending programmes. But we can't escape from the effects on our children, or society in general

this^^ I agree, op. and apparantly parents let their children way=tch things like celeb big bro, nudity, swearing, sexism, sex, etc etc.

doctor Whos got worse over the recent years, supposed to be family entertainment but now pure tokenism and trying to be in with the in crowd.

mind you, even strictly and dancing etc show kids its okay to be rude to people (Craig rev H and Jason Gardiner), the roman gladiatorarena/victorian freak showness of BGT (laughing and mocking Susan Boyle, Amandas lack of clothing etc).

videos-sorry, porn videos.

I am the regenerated Mary Whitehouse btw!!!! Wink.

Anne Widdicom seems the only voice of reason these days on tv/media (mostly, dont alwaysagree with her).

DGRossetti · 19/01/2018 16:22

Yes, as individuals we can turn off the offending programmes. But we can't escape from the effects on our children, or society in general

aka "think of the children"

So who shall be our moral guardian ? Who shall we trust to save us - from ourselves ?

I can answer the above in the negative: absolutely no-one who thinks they should do it, for a start.

The problem with trying to do anything morally, is that "morals" like "ethics" and "laws" are simply man made constructs. Like religion.

crunchymint · 19/01/2018 16:24

Some things are morally wrong.

OP posts:
KenForPM · 19/01/2018 16:27

Well, yes. But you can’t compare nudity on TV to something like murder.

DGRossetti · 19/01/2018 16:33

Some things are morally wrong.

Obviously ! Morality is an invention designed to make some things wrong.

There's no universal or absolute morality though.

DGRossetti · 19/01/2018 16:33

Well, yes. But you can’t compare nudity on TV to something like murder.

Some can.

twattymctwatterson · 19/01/2018 16:39

Is sex morally wrong then? Hmm
