To miss Mary Whitehouse?

Okay not her racism, sexism and anti gay views. But there is so much explicit sex and nakedness on TV now, I do wish there was someone in the public eye speaking out against it.

The Greeks wrote, we can read their own words.

Supermum That is depressing to hear. I do think sex education and talking about abuse is very important. Ignorance protects no one.

You're right OP. Unfortunately people have the historical perspectives of goldfish and believe that it was always this way. One of Mary Whitehouse's bugbears was the "slippery slope", which everyone scoffed at. Yet even 10 years ago something like Naked Attraction would have been unthinkable. Now here it is and the majority shrug their shoulders. In another 5 years it will "Blowjob Attraction" where people choose a date based on their ability to give good head. And everyone will shrug again. You'll get Mumsnetters saying "Oh I think it's great, it teaches people that being proficient sexually is important for compatibility" or some such shit.

It's watching a culture degenerate before your very eyes and at a rapidity that is probably unknown in human history. Because of the Internet and multichannel TV, every niche, sexual fetish or way of behaving is normalised and then thrown into the mainstream. Yet everyone wonders why teens are having such dysfunctional interactions with sexting and pressure on girls to perform sexually, they wonder why all the men they date want to reenact porn scenes, they wonder why "ghosting" has become normal, they wonder why men won't commit... All of which have complex origins, but which in large part are due to the utterly debased sexual culture we have developed in the past 10-20 years.

So no OP YANBU.

7Days · 18/01/2018 17:17

Yeah I agree op. I'd like good programmes that you coukd watch with kids. Less emphasis on sex in general.
Yeah sex and nudity is a part of life. It's the mixing of generations I don't like. Its cringe to watch sex scenes or innuendo with your teens or your fil. I'm ok with that, I think you can be a well adjusted person with a healthy sex life without watching what used to be categorised as porn with people you are not sexually involved with. It's not easy to enjoy a lazy chilled family time evening any more.
It won't cause an outbreak of repression if tv makers etc laid off it for a while.

"Naked Jungle" was 18 years ago ...

And I think it was "The Word" from the early 1990s, which had a spot where a girl had to identify her boyfriend from a selection of strangers by looking at penises alone. (Does anyone else remember ????)

Did anyone ever see "Wouldja Couldja" from the early 2000s ?

Lest we forget ...

crunchymint · 18/01/2018 17:22

Naked Jungle was widely derided and did not run long.

Yanbu. I'm sick of it. Its so boring.
I don't watch anymore.
But people love to be titillated. Just like the Victoria freak shows.

Graphista · 18/01/2018 17:47

"Ignorance protects no one." Oh the irony! 😂😂😂

crunchymint · 18/01/2018 17:56

Seeing explicit sex scenes does not protect people.
And what was once soft porn, is now mainstream in adverts and TV

OP posts:
lynmilne65 · 18/01/2018 18:09

And how do you think pornography starts??

ForalltheSaints · 18/01/2018 18:15

Mrs Whitehouse campaigned against things other than too much sex, in particular violence on tv, and I wish there was someone of her stature doing that today.

lynmilne65 · 18/01/2018 18:16

Do shut up Crunchy

"And I said that Greek art of men was not made for erotic reasons."

Vase paintings. That's all I can say: vase paintings. Unless they are unerotic sex scenes, of course.

Distractotron · 18/01/2018 18:24

Oh, The Word! I remember some girl doing the "I'll do anything to get on tv" bit tongue kissing an old bloke without his teeth in. Made me gip.
I'm still waiting for Running Man to be a thing. And I only came on this thread for the TMWE posts 😂

EdmundCleverClogs · 18/01/2018 18:25

Why? Still waiting for someone to explain why we cannot have viewing on tv/film showing things of a negative nature. There are plenty of options of what to watch on tv, very easy not to watch things with sex and violence, so why do we need a Victorian nanny to campaign for these things to be censored? Not everyone wants to watch bland tv. What channels would we have left - CBeebies and one other channel showing a mix of utterly boring-but-nice drivel, like Miranda Hart’s sitcom? Do we have to start censoring books as well? How about our own filthy minds?

The Spitting Image sketch I was looking for was a spoof advert for the satellite TV channel MW would have endorsed ....

Hi, I'm in my fifties, so remember her well. She, in my opinion was always a great source of entertainment, and I remember laughing at her on numerous occasions. I can tell you now, i'm wishing I had taken her seriously just like I wish I hadn't ridiculed Enoch Powell. Both were correct and ahead of their times.

StripySocksAndDocs · 18/01/2018 18:38

Don't recall Naked Jungle, never even heard of it, so no idea how short lived it was. Naked Attraction has hardly been running for eons has it?

The Word was seriously gross at times!! Sweaty armpit licking and the whatnot.

LyraPotter · 18/01/2018 18:45

Just don't watch what you don't like. You can't impose your own views on the entire nation under the guise of moral panic about seeing a willy on TV. It's done the world a lot of good to be less hysterical about nudity imo.

user1492877024 · 18/01/2018 18:50

LyraPotter Really? How on earth has it done the world a lot of good? Strange comment.

crunchymint · 18/01/2018 18:54

Naked Jungle had one episode. There was an outcry. The idea of what is acceptable on TV has changed a lot.

And Enoch Powell was not right. He was a right wing racist

OP posts:
YenneferOfVengerberg · 18/01/2018 18:56

"No I genuinely wish there were no explicit sex scenes on TV and no nakedness except for sex education programmes."

You really think it should be completely banned? So if I wanted to watch something like Game of Thrones or Breaking Bad or The Sopranos, despite being an adult who can make my own decisions, and even if I was to have to actively choose to watch it for example selecting it on a streaming service, I shouldn't be allowed because you personally don't like it?

I mean if someone suddenly got their cock out in the middle of Countdown I'd see your point. But something called The Naked Dating Show airing after the watershed is pretty easy to avoid.

user1492877024 · 18/01/2018 18:56

crunchymint Why was Enoch Powell a right wing racist?
