I was just wondering how long you and/or your DP/DH/DW spend each day commuting to and from work if you don't work from home.

Also, how do you travel to get there?

10 min walk - BUT... had heart trouble before Christmas, so takes 20 min now, knackers me - and there is no bus I can catch.

40 min walk is fine if there is an alternative when in ill health etc...

frumpety · 17/01/2018 07:32

30 minutes in the morning to go about 5 miles , drive home usually takes about 20 minutes same distance .

Me - 4 minutes in the car
Dh - 7 minutes by train then a couple of minutes walk

SellFridges · 17/01/2018 07:33

If I went directly to work and nowhere else, it’s a 4 minute drive, plus 5 mins walk from the car park. Or a 20 minute walk.

But I always have a child shaped detour. So in the car it’s about 15 mins plus walk. Can be up to 30 in traffic. And if I’m walking it’s a 30m walk via school.

HunterHearstHelmsley · 17/01/2018 07:33

Either an hour on the train or 2 minutes in the car. Depends which office I'm at.

SellFridges · 17/01/2018 07:34

For DH, it’s 14 mins on train plus the same walk. Or 45 mins in the car. He has the same detours as me though so that adds time. Can’t wait for both children to be in one place!

InflagranteDelicto · 17/01/2018 07:34

Dp: 1h15 by car. No real traffic issues, just distance and country roads.
Me :10 mins by car, 20-25 by bike. I can get the train, but I choose not to because it's not cheap. It's useful when my car is in the garage!

QuitMoaning · 17/01/2018 07:34

50 minutes train journey and 20 mins walk either end. Could get the tube at London end but walking is better for you and massively cheaper.

frenchlife19 · 17/01/2018 07:35

DH 2 /3 hours depending on which site he is on

G1ggleloop · 17/01/2018 07:36

Me:3 min walk plus 7 mins on the tube
OH: 35min drive/ 3min walk, 40 mins tube depending on what time he goes in. If he drove in after 7am it would take him well over an hour due to the traffic, but usually leaves home between 330 and 430

newyearnewname18 · 17/01/2018 07:38

About 1.25 hours if I'm doing nursery run, combination of walking, bus, train

About 50-60 mins if DH is on nursery duty.

Catsize · 17/01/2018 07:38

Between one hour and three hours each way, depending on location. Car and/or train. Usually about 1hr 45 each way.

speakout · 17/01/2018 07:39

For me - 30 seconds. I work from home.
OH 15 minutes drive each way.

Lovely.

Tumbleweed101 · 17/01/2018 07:39

5-10min drive.

squidkid · 17/01/2018 07:40

I work on several sites, so it depends: 1) 45 minutes walk or 30 minutes bus 2) 35 minutes walk 3) 45-1hr drive depending on traffic
Other half works 5 minutes walk from home which was pretty incredible when I was on maternity leave.

GoldenPlatitudes · 17/01/2018 07:43

15 minutes car journey, 30 minutes on the train then a 15 minute walk.

OneBiscuitAtATime · 17/01/2018 07:43

45 minutes in by car in the morning, an hour on the way back.

ButtMuncher · 17/01/2018 07:44

10 min walk.
It was a 3 hour round trip until we moved.

MissWilmottsGhost · 17/01/2018 07:44

15 mins by car/45 min walk/25 min cycle (steep hills either way). No bus available to current job despite being at a university in a large city Angry

DH 10 minutes by bike.

DH and I were just discussing the other day 'do you remember when we used to commute >1hr each way by car and get home at 7pm?', we couldn't believe how much day we wasted sat in traffic, and how much money we spent on fuel/tax/mot/insurance on 2 cars Shock

pastabakewithcheese · 17/01/2018 07:46

15 min walk then 50min tube
DP 15 Min walk then 25min tube

GruffaIo · 17/01/2018 07:47

Me: 2.5 hours - walk, train, bus. Reversed in the evening unless I'm working in a second location so need to get a different bus, tube combination to that site, then tube, walk home.

OH: 3 hours - walk, bus, train (2 changes), staff minibus from the last station. Reversed in the evening.

idontlikealdi · 17/01/2018 07:47

45ish mins door to door

2 min walk to station
3 min train
Wait for mainline train
20 min train
10 min walk

That's when the trains are actually on time though.

Smellylittleorange · 17/01/2018 07:47

7min walk 12 to 20 min train 25 min walk (reversed on way home)
Dh 7 min walk 10 min train (to depot) then he drives on all day/night of he has to drive anything between 12 to 25 mins i guess

FozBoz · 17/01/2018 07:50

Me: 1hr 30 each way x2 a week (work from home once a week)

DH: 2hrs each way x2 a week (3 day working from home)

Public transport for both our commutes would take double that time and cost us out of work. I'm on mat leave at the moment and my commute is making me consider going back carefully.

Interesting to see most people are around 20-30 minutes - we'd forgotten what a normal commute is!
