To not use the little fruit and veg bags

ObiJuanKenobi · 16/01/2018 18:33

...at the super market that they provide at the end of the aisle?

DP has only just noticed I don't use them which he thinks is really weird.
I just think it's a waste of plastic if you wash your fruit and veg anyway.

Am I the only one?

How do you keep them together in the trolley and at the checkout?

Ski4130 · 16/01/2018 18:35

Nope, I don’t either, despite the occasional unenthusiastic way the checkout operator looks at my individual tomatoes/potatoes/whatever 😀

ObiJuanKenobi · 16/01/2018 18:36

Fuzzy I just plop them together in the trolley and then place them one at a time on the conveyor belt Blush is that not right?

I don't use them, they are a total waste. Good on you!

MagicMoneyTree · 16/01/2018 18:38

I’ve never used them either. Total waste of plastic. Why do they need to be kept together?

esk1mo · 16/01/2018 18:39

ive never used them, but my DP does

Majuna · 16/01/2018 18:39

I do reuse them at home.

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 16/01/2018 18:39

YANBU. I have some little reusable net bags which I use instead.

afrikat · 16/01/2018 18:39

I haven't used them in 10+ years I think they are one of the most ridiculously wasteful items out there. Especially when people put a bloody bunch of bananas in there!

StupidSlimyGit · 16/01/2018 18:40

YANBU, if you don't want to use them don't, personally I only use them if I'm buying loads of small things such as baby potatoes.
is that not right? it's fine as long as you don't get grumpy if the cashier takes an extra moment to gather stuff and weight it Grin

WhatWouldLeslieKnopeDo · 16/01/2018 18:40

Most people do use them. It would be better if they provided paper bags.

EeeSheWasThin · 16/01/2018 18:40

I don’t use them either, it’s a waste. My DM has helpfully crocheted a string bag for me but I forget to take it 😀

Battleax · 16/01/2018 18:40

The only problem with that is that some supermarkets make you weigh and label yourself in the greengrocery section. I take mini string bags.

SuburbanRhonda · 16/01/2018 18:40

Where did you get your little net bags, leslie? They sound right up my street Smile

fairislecable · 16/01/2018 18:41

If I use the scanner thing as I do my shopping I stick the printed label on my fruit/veg and put them in my shopping bag.

Small things like mushrooms I use the paper bags (which are provided), but tomatoes for some reason only have the plastic bags by them.

I wish paper bags were the standard.

megletthesecond · 16/01/2018 18:41

Yanbu. I don't mind my carrots rolling around on the conveyor belt. Gives them a bit of freedom before they're eaten.

Whisky2014 · 16/01/2018 18:41

I don't use them either.
Why do they need to be kept together?
This is the kind if thing people really need to be changing their habits on. We saw our parents using the bags so now we do too. Stop and think! The stuff goes in your normal shopping bag anyway, why does it need a separate one? Argh. Sorry it's a pet hate of mine!

Vinorosso74 · 16/01/2018 18:41

I don't use them either (exception being the paper bag provided for mushrooms).
My parents however take handfuls to put their rubbish in.....

ObiJuanKenobi · 16/01/2018 18:42

Yes I can definitely see their use when it comes to little things like button mushrooms or Brussel sprouts, I think I do use them for the little ones.
DP has now said my fruit and veg will get dirty - surely it won't be any dirtier that in the crates being fondled by the world and his wife Hmm

OP posts:
Pollaidh · 16/01/2018 18:43

I don't use them unless buying lots of little things like new potatoes. If it's a few lemons, apples etc, I just put them together on the conveyor belt.

ObiJuanKenobi · 16/01/2018 18:43

I scan my shopping as I go round so they go loose into my veg bag along with the sticky labels stuck to one of them.

Breadkneadslove · 16/01/2018 18:44

Meglet! Happy free range carrots made me smile Smile

FuzzyCustard · 16/01/2018 18:44

Agree with paper bags.

"why do they need to be kept together?" I am imagining the contents of my trolley at the checkout...a mashed up mess of fruits and veg, all rolling round together and squashed by the subsequent addition of cat food/washing powder/frozen chips etc etc. "Oh hang on another few minutes while I chase that last Jersey Royal round"

(PS I've been reducing my plastic usage for some time now, but can't get round the loose veg issue)
