To not use the little fruit and veg bags

...at the super market that they provide at the end of the aisle?

DP has only just noticed I don't use them which he thinks is really weird.
I just think it's a waste of plastic if you wash your fruit and veg anyway.

Am I the only one?

I just pinch the paper bags from the mushroom section and use it for other veg and fruit.

wrenika · 16/01/2018 19:50

I don't use them...but my mum snaffles a handful whenever she does her shopping because she thinks they are handy...so my goodness only goes someway toward undoing her badness!

Situp · 16/01/2018 19:53

I cut up an old muslin curtain and sewed into bags to use. I can then bung them in the wash if they every get grim.

The big problem with a lot of biodegradable stuff it that in the anaerobic atmosphere of landfill they don't break down. They still use a non-renewable raw materials to make.

BakedBeans47 · 16/01/2018 19:53

I have never in my life seen people either using reusable net bags (although those do sound cool) or having multiple items of loose produce rolling around their trolley or the belt. Another of those only on mumsnet things I feel Grin

I do wish they’d provide paper bags though

Sparklingbrook · 16/01/2018 19:57

I use them. I also weigh the fruit/veg and stick the sticker on the bag, scan it and put it into my reusable shopping bag.

I don't want all the fruit and veg rolling about.

If they used paper bags for fruit and veg the poor cashiers would be having to open and peer into every bag to see what was in it then weigh it. Making using the manned tills even more time consuming.

Dahlietta · 16/01/2018 19:57

No, I pretty much never use them. Maybe if I'm getting more than 4 of one thing I would consider it, but I can't think when that last happened. Parsnips? I do use the paper bags for mushrooms though.

TheHuffAndPuffALot · 16/01/2018 20:01

I actually tweeted Asda today as, bar some onions, spuds and aubergine, all the fruit and veg were being sold in pre-sealed plastic packaging.

Surprise surprise I've had no reply yet....

FlyMaybe · 16/01/2018 20:02

I've just ordered some mesh bags thanks to this thread.

Dogs in a shopping trolley? No. Just NO.

anotherexhaustedpigeon · 16/01/2018 20:03

@megletthesecond your post made me so happy, freedom for carrots everywhere!!

I pick up a couple of the mushroom bags and use them for tomatoes and small potatoes, works perfectly and the toms never rot as fast as in plastic IMO

HRoosevelt · 16/01/2018 20:03

I put my loose stuff in the bags I've brought for the shopping

CaptainHammer · 16/01/2018 20:05

Yanbu, I don’t use them either.

Maryann1975 · 16/01/2018 21:17

I’m struggling with this at the moment. I’m trying to cut down my plastic use, but I do internet shopping from Tesco and they seem to put it all in plastic bags and the rest I get from Aldi where you have to buy it in prepacked bags. It really annoys me.

Sparklingbrook · 16/01/2018 21:19

How does it work for weighing stuff if you don't put it in the plastic bags?

ObiJuanKenobi · 16/01/2018 21:34

I don't tend to weigh anything there aren't label printing facilities at my store

OP posts:
ObiJuanKenobi · 16/01/2018 21:34

But I would imagine I could place potatoes onto the scales, bag free, without too much of an issue!

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 16/01/2018 21:36

I buy about 8 apples at a time. And loose new potatoes. They would be escaping from the scales without a bag. The weighing area isn't that big.

I need to study how people do this obviously.

Battleax · 16/01/2018 21:39

But I would imagine I could place potatoes onto the scales, bag free, without too much of an issue!

Well done you Hmm

It's convincing the staff on the till that your label "covers" all your loose baby new potatoes and you're not pinching anything that's the issue.

ObiJuanKenobi · 16/01/2018 21:41

We don't have labels so I don't need to weigh anything.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 16/01/2018 21:42

If the scales are some way away from the new potatoes do you clutch them all to your bosom and hope for the best as you walk over? Confused

No hands free to push the trolley...

Battleax · 16/01/2018 21:42

Yes you said that.

Then you moved onto what you'd do if you did need to print a label.

SimonBridges · 16/01/2018 21:43

I use some reusable bags called Onya Weigh. I was going to link to them but they seem out of stock everywhere.

Sparklingbrook · 16/01/2018 21:43

But someone has to weigh them. If not the customer then the cashier.

Battleax · 16/01/2018 21:44

You lob them one at a time, sparkling cheering yourself every time you get a direct hit Wink

ObiJuanKenobi · 16/01/2018 21:45

I did say earlier about little fruits and veg - new potatoes would presumably be covered under that umbrella.

OP posts:
Battleax · 16/01/2018 21:46

This is going round in circles.

You'd cause ructions in my Waitrose if you didn't put them in ^something*. They don't like ructions.

That was the point; Not all supermarkets are the same.
