If you have a coffee machine at home how many cups do you drink a day?

I had a Tassimo for Christmas. My intake of coffee has considerably increased since. I'm not sure that's good.
Does the novelty wear off eventually?

I used to be a big tea drinker but liked an occasional latte. I have hardly drunk tea since Christmas day (although i have tea capsules as well).

DH doesn't drink hot drinks either. He actually hates the smell of coffee with a passion so it was a very nice surprise at Christmas to get it as a gift.

1 cup at home, but I absolutely relish it.

If I'm also going out for coffee with a friend I might stretch to two cups per day. But 3pm is my cut off point as I'm one of those annoying insomniacs.

CakeNinja · 16/01/2018 21:35

I don’t drink hot drinks but bought one for dp the Christmas before last.
He doesn’t drink coffee daily but likes an espresso after a boozy meal at the weekends and also a couple on a Sunday morning. He occasionally has meetings at home and they will drink coffee then too.
Guests however drink the coffee regularly as it’s apparently much nicer than instant. I don’t know, all smells grim to me!
I order Espresso and Americano grande capsules in large packs from amazon whenever supplies are running low.

Sparklingbrook · 16/01/2018 21:40

I haven't tried making coffees for a larger gathering yet. I feel like they would all be having fun without me while I was messing about with the Tassimo. By the time I had made the last drink the first one would be finished. Grin

but there are 2 capsules involves for a latte.

My friend showed me lattes made with half a pint of milk heated in the microwave with an espresso disc added. Makes an even nicer latte than the ones with the milk pods.

And I had to get one of these storage units, don't have the bench space for the revolving ones, although it doesn't look like they have any listed at the moment:

These are good too, but they weren't around when I bought mine:

Up to three Nespressos a day.

TheVanguardSix · 16/01/2018 21:46

The novelty will definitely wear off, don't worry.

I have a Tassimo. I have about 2 cups a day before 11am.

Then I move onto the hard stuff: Barry's Gold Blend.

FancyNewBeesly · 16/01/2018 21:46

I have a bean to cup machine and drink 2-3 cups a day. We used to have a tassimo at work but found them a bit grim, especially anything with "milk".

I discovered that Ikea sell decent coffee beans, always on 3 for 2, so £4.50 for three bags of beans which is a bargain. I stuck up every time I go or someone I know goes for me - saves me a fortune (I realise this is not helpful for you, but might help someone with a machine that takes coffee rather than pods!)

Sparklingbrook · 16/01/2018 21:55

Thanks Muddling I will try that with my normal milk. And that drawer holder looks great.

I am not sure about sharing a Tassimo at a workplace or something. You never quite know who has done what with it.

OurMiracle1106 · 16/01/2018 21:58

My tassimo was also a present. Have 1 cup a day generally. Maybe 2 on rare occasions.

Love a caramel latte.

KickAssAngel · 16/01/2018 22:12

Fancy I hardly ever go to IKEA but am going this weekend for the first time in about 5 years. I have a bean grinder, and then a double-boiler machine that does espresso, hot water and steam for frothing.

I make a coffee every day from it, and use a to-go cup (from Starbucks, does not leak at all).

DH and I reckon that we've saved thousands over the years, as well as not using paper cups etc.

If anyone wants to use a machine but not have pods cluttering up the earth, there are these K-cups for several major brands.

OrlandosGibbon · 16/01/2018 22:24

I have reusable nespresso pods (lots on amazon), and drink 5-7 coffees a day (2 before work, 2 at work where there is also a nespresso, and 1-3 after work). Not all coffees work with the pods, and I’ve had the best results with Illy extra dark espresso grind. It takes about five minutes to clean and refill the capsules. Ignoring the cost of the capsules, each cup now costs me 13p in coffee, against 17p for Aldi capsules, and 31-33p for Nespresso.

shittyshitybangbang · 16/01/2018 23:28

Am I mad for considering buying a coffee machine after reading all the comments?. I don't really drink coffee but I'm am actually thinking about buying this.>>

JAMMFYesPlease · 16/01/2018 23:35

When I had a Tassimo, I started with 2-3 per day and then cut down to one. Now I have a filter coffee machine and have 1-2 cups on a morning and that's it unless I feel really drained after a bad night and will have another 1-2 cups later but that's rare.

BatFaceGal · 17/01/2018 08:29

We have a bean to cup machine and drink one cup each a day. However we don’t drink caffeinated coffee... always decaf beans from the Decadent Decaf Coffee Company. You can’t tell the difference

Iprefercoffeetotea · 17/01/2018 08:32

I have a filter coffee machine and drink two cups a day.

Don't really get the capsule thing - it's probably easier throwing coffee grounds onto the compost (or just into the bin if you don't have a compost bin) than having to find a recycling point for the capsules. Why do so many people like them? When I was a friend's I only got a tiny amount of coffee out too, with filter coffee I can have a whole cup.

Sparklingbrook · 17/01/2018 08:36

The Tassimo cup sizes are completely normal. I like the capsules as you can do more than just coffee. But this is my first venture into a machine that makes hot beverages. Call it entry level. 😀

I really do not understand why people love pod coffees so much. I see it as a marketing ploy to get people to buy a product for life rather than a one off purchase. Whilst they may be better than instant coffee they are still essentially stale coffee.

You can easily get a machine that does pods as well as ground coffee which gives you so much more freedom and will allow you to experience freshly roasted coffee at a price that is less than pods and still be able to use pods on days where you have less time. If you shop around you can get a great second hand machine for around £100 that could easily last you 5 years or more.

I really think those using pods are missing out on better coffee for a cheaper price and less environmental impact by not having a decent espresso machine that uses ground coffee.

Sparklingbrook · 17/01/2018 11:43

Thanks for your input Pumpkin, mine was a gift from DH, and I am really liking it so far, and am missing nothing IMO.

IthinkImislaid10years · 17/01/2018 11:52

I love popping a pod in and pushing a button.

I'm unconvinced grinding coffee beans would be as easy?

(Also my most recent machine was £40 new.)

I love the smell of freshly ground beans though. One day....

Grenoble124 · 17/01/2018 11:52

I use two nespresso capsules in the morning. On a very tired day I have a third capsule later. I used to have more but was flying through it so now my morning cup is a treat.

Sparklingbrook · 17/01/2018 11:53

I have just had the one latte today. I am going out to meet a friend at our favourite coffee shop later, going to have to pay for one. Shock Grin

PumpkinPiloter · 17/01/2018 12:11

IthinkImislaid10years Grinding your own beans is very easy. It is as simple as putting them in the top pressing a button and they come out ground :)

Using ground coffee to make something equivalent/better than a pod coffee is also extremely easy.

The difficulty factor only kicks in when you start to get really technical about coffee making which is something people generally do because they enjoy it rather than needing to do it to drink decent coffee.

Using a steam wand can be a faff but then there are devices that do it for you or cheat methods like the ones discussed earlier in this thread.

The real joy and step up in quality is being a) able to buy freshly ground coffee and b)being able to freshly grind your own beans both of which are very straight forward.

PumpkinPiloter · 17/01/2018 12:15

Sparklingbrook While I am really glad you are enjoying your present may I gently suggest that you do knot know you are missing something because you are yet to try making coffee at home form freshly roasted beans yet.

Be careful its a slippery slope!

Having said all that anything that gets this country away from drinking instant (gravel) coffee gets a big thumbs up from me.
