Jealous Guy

Written and performed by a man who admitted he was violent towards women.

Just that really.

I enjoy it, but still shocks me every time I hear 'I don't like Mondays'. Very crass for many that those events were written into an upbeat pop song.

AnnieAnoniMouse · 14/01/2018 15:45

You’ll be wanting to ban breathing next.

Turn it off if you don’t like it.

GabsAlot · 14/01/2018 15:45

afaik jonny depp has never been charged with any ofence

his ex on the other hand has

lljkk · 14/01/2018 15:47

What about "Wake up Little Suzy", How misogynistic is that?

Frogletmamma · 14/01/2018 15:47

I always wonder about take a walk on the wildside being played at lunchtime on radio 2. Whats giving head (cue DD)?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/01/2018 15:48

Yep! I was on the thread about it. I think some posters were surprised, may even have been persuaded by the long, to and fro discussion.

I am a bit dismayed that Paradise by the Dashboard Lights That poster cannot have actually listened to or read the lyrics.. just the title and maybe the baseball bits Smile

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/01/2018 15:49

What about "Wake up Little Suzy", How misogynistic is that? Sits, waits....

UAEMum · 14/01/2018 15:50

I hate "never been to me" by Charlene. Anti feminist anthem. Basically, says she has had a wonderful life travelling, sunning herself on yauchts, sleeping with Kings etc. Sadly, she regrets not settling down and having children. She is telling all us women with "boring lives" to shut up and be grateful. Its a catchy tune mind!

dawnc27 · 14/01/2018 15:52

some of the beautiful souths lyrics are a bit dodgy, for example woman in the wall he only knew his problem when he knocked her over and when the rotting flesh began to stink and retty much everyone of eminems but they are still 2 of my favourite artists

TinklyLittleLaugh · 14/01/2018 15:54

When I was a kid, and I heard the Roxy Music version of the song thaT they recorded as a tribute to John Lennon, after he was murdered, I honestly thought it was meant to be about the man who killed John Lennon. Confused

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/01/2018 15:55

dawnc don't listen to Babybird's I Didn't Want To Wake You Up then!

The next day, I shouted in your ear,
I wish that I could wake you up
The next week I kicked you in the head
I wish that I could wake you up

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/01/2018 15:56

Tinkly That is why they released it. Bryan Ferry said as much, often!

Andrewofgg · 14/01/2018 15:56

Othello - racist

Taming of the Shrew - misogynistic

The Merchant of Venice, let's not get started!

On the other hand: Measure for Measure, an attack on sexual harassment and the abuse of power for sexual purposes.

Where the hell do you stop?

Clawdy · 14/01/2018 15:59

Wake Up Little Suzy is misogynistic? ? Two young teenagers fall asleep in the car at a drive in movie, and wake up in a panic, as they will both be in trouble at home now.....what am I missing here ?

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/01/2018 16:00

When we all sing Kumbaya, endlessly!

Gingernaut · 14/01/2018 16:02

Why play Michael Jackson and not Gary Glitter?

Both are/were paedophiles....

Andrewofgg · 14/01/2018 16:07

Gingernaut One was acquitted of all charges and if you were surprised we are both in good company; but he was.

CedricDiggory · 14/01/2018 16:07

Op I completely agree with you. Quite frankly I think it’s disgusting that’s it’s being played. I’m with you on this one.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 14/01/2018 16:09

Really Curious? Perhaps I picked up on that. Unbelievably crass though if that's the case. Not sure that Bryan Ferry should have been claiming to speak on behalf of Mark Chapman.

Tinycitrus · 14/01/2018 16:11

Yes a committee which can uphold the orthodoxy and protect us all from Bad Thoughts - be aware though, the rules change hourly.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/01/2018 16:12

Kumbaya my Lord, kumbaya
Kumbaya my Lord, kumbaya
Kumbaya my Lord, kumbaya
Oh Lord, kumbaya

Someone's singing Lord, kumbaya
(not any more they're not, they're all too rude)
Someone's singing Lord, kumbaya
Someone's singing Lord, kumbaya
Oh Lord, kumbayah

Someone's laughing, Lord, kumbaya
(That'll be me, apologies, it got too daft),
Someone's laughing, Lord, kumbaya
Someone's laughing, Lord, kumbaya
Oh Lord, kumbaya

Someone's crying, Lord, kumbaya
(Still me, sorry, reality has set in)
Someone's crying, Lord, kumbaya
Someone's crying, Lord, kumbaya
Oh Lord, kumbaya

Someone's praying, Lord, kumbaya
(Please let this be a dream, I'm begging, just a dream)
Someone's praying, Lord, kumbaya
Someone's praying, Lord, kumbaya
Oh Lord, kumbaya

Someone's sleeping, Lord, kumbaya
(Cos there's bugger all left to, my Lord, Kum By Bleeding ya!)
Someone's sleeping, Lord, kumbaya
Someone's sleeping, Lord, kumbaya
Oh Lord, kumbaya
Oh Lord, kumbaya

To reintroduce a bit of perspective, as the cries of McCarthyism mount, we're talking about whether certain songs should continue to receive mainstream airplay, not about a mass burning of any music/literature/poetry that might offend.

It's an interesting debate, as it touches on several flashpoints.

poetryinmotion13 · 14/01/2018 16:13

Curious Kumbaya????!!!!!! NO!!! We would all be in Hell then. I hate that song!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 14/01/2018 16:15

Tinkly think it was more "we wanted to cover it for ages, it seemed like the right time, Chapman was a jealous guy, Lennon was his own oracle, it struck a nerve with fans and non fans alike!"

Tinycitrus · 14/01/2018 16:17

Certain songs?

How do you judge? Who gets to choose and why do we need to be protected?
