Jealous Guy

Written and performed by a man who admitted he was violent towards women.

Just that really.

Nuance sometimes helps. The Stones singing Under My Thumb might be mock misogyny, esp as they are all long haired and flouncy, not the hard man look you expected in the 60s, and they're playing up to their bad boy image. It was always incumbent on the bloke to make the effort back then, and you could argue that what women lacked in social and political power they made up for in sexual power, so it's a case of making a bloke sweat a bit. That whole thing has gone really once you have women signing on to Tinder, it's not like all women do, but culturally something changes then.

Back to the Stones, you never really got the sense that Anita Pallenburg was a wet dishrag so that is a factor too. One awful Crackerjack clip however has a Northern lad straight out of Shirley Valentina doing a cover, nuance be gone, and it's just horrible.

Enjoy!

Oh, and I should out myself as a bloke as this is a gender-based discussion...

No, you didn’t need to put yourself as a man - that was obvious. 🙄

Iwasjustabouttosaythat · 17/01/2018 12:16

Put = out autocorrect bastard.

For me, its:

Olivers army. Brilliant song but mentions the N word. still played on radio.

In the summertime-Mungo Jerry- have a drink, have a drive.

melting pot-Blue Mink- the way they describe Chinese people.

Im sure theres more.

know what you mean though OP.

Butterymuffin · 17/01/2018 12:52

If you listen when Oliver's Army is now played on the radio, though, they repeat the last two lines of the first verse, instead of the actual last two lines of the second where you'd have the n word. I think this was done first on Stars in Their Eyes, and radio companies must then have thought this would be a good solution.

I can't fit loving Eminem's music in with my personal values. "You think I won't choke no whore until the vocal chords don't work in her throat no more!?" Absolutely vile lyrics, still love the song.

VictoriaOKeefe · 17/01/2018 14:09

when you are a beautiful woman you get a lot of "who wouldn't want to take you? Who wouldn't want to make you have sex with them?

IMightMentionGriddlebone · 17/01/2018 17:37

That's funny. Because the woman who grassed him up repeatedly and was ignored by the police and has also had several police complaints upheld says she told his bandmates and they did fuck all about it.

Just sayin'.

Shock In that case, I'll save my sympathy for somebody else.

Women’s sexual power - will in the 60s you couldn’t get the pill if unmarried, would struggle to support yourself as a single parent, no dna tests or child support agency, oh and you couldnt legally be raped within marriage.
So powerful!

labazs · 18/01/2018 16:47

other people have recorded this song

Lillithxxx · 18/01/2018 18:12

Strewth!
You could almost stop listening to anything in case (as a woman) it was obligatory to be offended.
