Jealous Guy

Written and performed by a man who admitted he was violent towards women.

Just that really.

I don't care who you are
Where you're from
What you did
As long as you love me
Who you are
Where you're from
Don't care what you did
As long as you love me
What the fuck is wrong with those lines?

Teabagtits · 16/01/2018 00:36

alibobob the primary 7s at my daughters school sang that Fun song at their leaving assembly. I did wonder if the teacher had read the lyrics... oddly I quite like the tune despite the potential dv suggestion.

I often wondered why Neil Sedaka’s Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen is so revered given how creepy it is waiting for a child to become legal... it’s almost as if he inspired the daily mail
“Tonight's the night I've waited for
Because you're not a baby anymore
You've turned into the prettiest girl I've ever seen
Happy birthday, sweet sixteen”

“But since you've grown up, your future is sewn up
From now on you're gonna be mine, so”

He’s barely given the poor lassie the opportunity to turn 16 without staking his claim and he goes on about her being 6years old... he’d been waiting a while for her then... shudders.

I know this thread is predominantly about dv in music but there’s a huge number of songs that fetishise the barely legal too and they get loads of radio2 airplay on Steve Wright

ginghambox · 16/01/2018 00:41

Because Sedaka was singing as a boy the same age .FFS

Some of the teenagers listening to this crap have low self esteem. This whiny lyric does nothing for them.

jcyclops · 16/01/2018 01:43

17 pages in and lots of mentions of people accused of this or rumoured to have done that, but nobody has mentioned a certain singer who was actually convicted of violence against women ie. Cheryl Tweedy.

IMightMentionGriddlebone · 16/01/2018 01:57

ImAGoner That will be lostprophets. Unfortunately for his bandmates (who were and are beyond revolted and horrified), their artistic work goes down the drain too.

I believe they've started a new band without that singer, under a different name, because they wanted a clean slate.

CheshireChat · 16/01/2018 02:03

My absolute hate is Mötley Crüe's Saints of Los Angeles

Girls passed out,
Naked in the back e
Everyone is going to score

Yeah, by raping them Hmm. It's not even one of their older songs.

However, I disagree we should ban things that make us uncomfortable- it's ok to passionately disagree, it's ok to choose a different form of entertainment, but not ban them.

diodati · 16/01/2018 02:46

So what's next? Burning books by writers with suspected or confirmed abusive behaviour? Destroying paintings, sculptures, architecture... where does it stop? Shakespeare beat his wife or maybe liked young boys, Homer, Da Vinci...

araiwa · 16/01/2018 03:19

anyone calling for any artistic expression to be banned should be ignored for evermore

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 16/01/2018 06:42

Gingham I don’t see any DV reference in those lyrics.

Sedaka was 22 by the way when he sang “sweet sixteen”.

teabagtits you’re right that song always did seem kind of creepy. It’s like “let the poor girl grow up in her own time FGS”.

IfyouseeRitaMoreno · 16/01/2018 06:43

Calm down. We’re not calling for any banning. Just having a discussion if that’s ok.

Lillithxxx · 16/01/2018 07:13

Jcyclops
Cheryl. Yes you wouldn’t want to meet
her in the Ladies....
MN is full of self the opinionated double standards brigade and why I’d never use it to ask for any advice.

That's funny. Because the woman who grassed him up repeatedly and was ignored by the police and has also had several police complaints upheld says she told his bandmates and they did fuck all about it.

Just sayin'.

Eltonjohnssyrup · 16/01/2018 08:12

Shakespeare beat his wife or maybe liked young boys

Ah, but haven't you read the earlier posts?

We can rationalise anything Shakespeare did by assuming that all intelligent people have always had the thoughts and values of early 21st century middle class lefties. It's simple!

fluffiny31 · 16/01/2018 08:16

To be honest not many songs bother me if I think it's inappropriate I turn it off. But they stopped playing songs of convicted paedophiles ie Ralph Harris etc.

Justanotherlurker · 16/01/2018 08:32

Did Rolf harris ever really have any hits that are played on mainstream radio stations, i very much doubt it.

Calm down. We’re not calling for any banning. Just having a discussion if that’s ok.

And you cannot expect the conversation to stay within the confines of your boundaries, this is the text book example of the slippery slope and all those wanting just a "discussion" have yet to say where the line is, is there a time frame, is it just a particular genre of music?

SuperBeagle · 16/01/2018 08:37

I have a Wiggles video from the 1990s with him in it. Mainstream. Wink

Eltonjohnssyrup · 16/01/2018 09:00

Two little boys used to be on Radio 2 quite a bit

That is literally what the thread is about: stopping things being played on the radio. Hmm

midnightmisssuki · 16/01/2018 09:09

are you sure theyre not playing the one by Biran Ferry - thats a famous one, in fact i prefer it!

midnightmisssuki · 16/01/2018 09:09

Brian^^

cantucciniamaretto · 16/01/2018 09:09

It's the same song.

midnightmisssuki · 16/01/2018 09:10

Bryan^^

Jesus im on fire to day with my horrendous spelling! Sorry!

midnightmisssuki · 16/01/2018 09:11

Yes - its the same song - but sung by a different person - the OP is outraged that John Lennon sang it so i gave her an alternative Confused cantucciniamaretto

Fekko · 16/01/2018 09:14

We won’t delve into Dylan. Much as I llove him we just haven’t got time for all his dubious lyrics.
