Who grates cheese anymore?

I accidentally got into a conversation with a woman I don’t know at work today and whilst regaling us with the fact that she never chops anything and buys all veg pre chopped, she seemed aghast that anyone bothers to grate cheese and why would you when you can buy it pre grated.

Maybe because it’s covered in potato starch, expensive and not great quality?

Am I the only cheese grater left?

I've never bought grated cheese in my life. I will confess to buying diced swede though. Those buggers are rock hard!

FreddieClaryHorshieLion · 10/01/2018 19:18

I use something like this (there are several... ehm grater sizes you could put in) for large-ish portions. but I also use it to make carrot salad etc.

Who grates cheese anymore?
Willow2017 · 10/01/2018 19:18

Nope I dont buy it either. Never considered paying more for grated cheese, I like mine to have a bit of 'bite' to it. I chop my own veg too.

We have it at work and I dont like it, tastes vile and just sits on top of stuff like baked potatoes in a lump.

Obviously if you have medical issues and its easier for you thats a different matter but the few seconds it takes to grate cheese its ludicrous to buy more expensive cheese with additivies if you dont need to?

WildCherryBlossom · 10/01/2018 19:18

I use ready grated gruyere & emmenthal for cheese fondue.

ragdoll700 · 10/01/2018 19:19

RowenasDiadem Im with you it tastes horrible

TrashPanda · 10/01/2018 19:19

I don't grate cheese, it's one of the reasons I keep DP around Grin

cricketqueen · 10/01/2018 19:19

My dd loves cheese and has just gone through a stage of only eating cheese on toast if I had bought grated cheese all the time I would have had to get a small loan haha

SukiTheDog · 10/01/2018 19:19

Me. Good strong cheese....use less of it!

idontlikealdi · 10/01/2018 19:19

I but grated mozzarella for the kids
When we make pizza. The rest of the time I grate!

SilverySurfer · 10/01/2018 19:20

Never have and never would buy pre-grated cheese or frozen/pre-chopped veg. Yuk.

tshirtsuntan · 10/01/2018 19:20

I like grated cheese for making cheese sauce, the powdery stuff helps.

Thermostatpolice · 10/01/2018 19:20

We grate. Pre chopped frozen veg are brilliant for quick soup. Otherwise we chop too.

I grate my own. Pregrated just doesn’t taste the same and it doesn’t bloody melt properly!

KurriKurri · 10/01/2018 19:22

I don't buy pre grated cheese, and I mostly chop my own veg, but I have problems with my hands and can't manage butternut squash - the skin is to hard for me to cut through (I struggle a bit with swede too) so I do sometimes buy that pre chopped.

Esspee · 10/01/2018 19:23

A tip for people who use cheese for toppings regularly. Freeze your favourite cheddar in single use blocks. Once defrosted and you slice it it will crumble. Just rub it between your fingers as you sprinkle it over the dish. Tastes great and no grating.

Lana1234 · 10/01/2018 19:23

Yeah we grate our own cheese. Doesn't take much time or effort and much nicer than pre grated.

Mrsemcgregor · 10/01/2018 19:23

If you use pre grated you don’t get to eat the big lumps that crumble off whilst grating. My case is rested.

OvO · 10/01/2018 19:24

Yuk to pre-grated cheese.

I HATE grating cheese. So I either make a DC do it or I just grate the lot by sticking the grater disc on my food processor. Takes about 6 seconds to grate a big block!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 10/01/2018 19:24

I grate cheese, it seems fresher somehow that way. I do buy cheese slices though, especially the Edam ones as its hard to get a slice decent for a sandwich from a wedge. I buy sliced corned beef too, as the cans are lethal and the meat is mushy. I buy pre cut carrot batons, which I fully acknowledge is plain lazy....

PookieNoodlin · 10/01/2018 19:24

Nope we're still graters here too!

Not only is it rank, it's not very good value for money either! Why would I buy a small bag for like 3 quid when I can get a massive block for the same price that will produce twice as much grated cheese.

Cherrycokewinning · 10/01/2018 19:24

I buy pre grated to save time. It’s hardly quality cheese anyway (just sandwich cheese) so the taste isn’t a factor.

TurquoiseDress · 10/01/2018 19:24

Definitely like to grate my own cheese!

OH still keeps buying the pre grated cheese which in my opinion tastes awful.

It literally takes a few minutes to grate some nice cheddar

KindergartenKop · 10/01/2018 19:24

Grated cheese costs the same.

FluffyWuffy100 · 10/01/2018 19:25

I grate cheese. Don’t really like the ore grated stuff.
