Who grates cheese anymore?

I accidentally got into a conversation with a woman I don’t know at work today and whilst regaling us with the fact that she never chops anything and buys all veg pre chopped, she seemed aghast that anyone bothers to grate cheese and why would you when you can buy it pre grated.

Maybe because it’s covered in potato starch, expensive and not great quality?

Am I the only cheese grater left?

For mac and cheese and lasagne- pre grated cheese. You can't tell the difference if it's fully melted. Everything else (I agree with a PP-it still doesn't melt on a jacket potato), I grate my own.

I grate our cheese.

The best thing about it is the last bit that's too much faff to grate so gets scoffed.

Ds's ex gf used to buy pre-grated until I asked her "I thought you liked cheese?" she used to leave it in my fridge Angry vile stuff.

Chop veggies here too, even fresh carrots for the dog.

Grated cheddar - I put a block through the magimix once a week and keep it in a Tupperware in the fridge. Mozzarella for pizza - bags of the grated stuff in the cheese drawer, it melts fine and tastes great.

NZ cheese on the whole is pretty crap though. You’d think that for a country with such an emphasis on the dairy industry that there would be good cheese. Sadly you’d be wrong, and you would end up paying the equivalent of £8 a kilo for the cheapest stuff with any flavour.

Luckily they manage to get ice cream right!

I buy pre-gated sometimes often because I'm lazy. I even buy pre-sliced cheese sometimes, though that's more so DD can do the cheese herself for her toast so I don't have to go to the kitchen and slice some for her. Which I suppose is down to me being lazy again.

I'm surprised so many people grate Cheddar, but buy the mozzarella already done- I find the Cheddar harder to grate, surely with mozzarella you just pull strips off? I find that very satisfying actually.

The surface of cheese oxidises which adds to the flavour, which is why freshly grated cheese tastes (even) better than sliced or chunks.

I'm lazy and live alone so tend to get most of my veg inclding onions & mushrooms frozen and therefore pre-prepared. But cheese HAS to be in blocks, one block can be eaten in chunks, sliced or grated Grin

I remember (old gimmer alert) the tubs of dried parmesan that were the height of sophistication when I was wee.

I get into trouble with DH when he finds tooth marks (mine) on the block of parmesan. When I can't find the cheesegrater and he's supposed to help me look, I bite into it to give him a sense of urgency. It's very effective.

I usually buy cheese and grated. Almost never buy pre prepared veg. Other than butternut squash which I sometimes get prechopped to avoid the very real possibility of impaling myself on the knife.

I do, my sister does, my mum does. I ask you who buys the horrible grated cheese. Its tastes off. You need to grate it fresh. Try it op...you wont buy pre grated again. Can i suggest this grater..ive bought it for loads of wedding presents and every single person has told me best present ever and used daily. Ive also been to my friends houses and seen my wedding present on the draining board and been in use!

I sometimes buy grated gruyere, but I don’t like English cheese other than goats cheese so none of the rest applies to me. Ready sliced or grated cheese tends to taste a bit plastic anyway.

But at risk of going off on a tangent, does anybody have a really good cheese grater? I always end up with cheese everywhere. I bought one with a collection container that fits on the bottom and thought it would solve all my problems, but quite a bit falls off the outside too. It needs a container that clips on, has a non-stick bottom and projects beyond the grating face. Anyone got such a utopian grater?

pregrated cheese goes mouldy if you dont use it quickly. Normal block cheese doesnt

we grate.when we first got our ikea grater with box underneath we were very excited.
not on to people who obviously use pre chopped stuff when time is limited but I think this is part of the problem.we need to get people(kids etc) to get back into the chopping,preparing good meals and stuff. spednign time and learning the skills to do so.

5 years ago I’d buy all the pre chopped/pre grated convenience food, heat up Jar and freezer food and call it dinner but not anymore!

The only cheat I sometimes use is pre chopped, frozen onion if I’m making a batch of chilli or something, because chopping three onions is about my limit!

I'm a grater. Pre grated cheese tastes funny.........plus I always use the fine grating side, not the chunky one as I find it makes the cheese go.further if it's just being scattered over soup or food.
