Who grates cheese anymore?

I accidentally got into a conversation with a woman I don’t know at work today and whilst regaling us with the fact that she never chops anything and buys all veg pre chopped, she seemed aghast that anyone bothers to grate cheese and why would you when you can buy it pre grated.

Maybe because it’s covered in potato starch, expensive and not great quality?

Am I the only cheese grater left?

Nope not the only one left. I've never bought ready grated cheese!

gunsandbanjos · 10/01/2018 18:58

I like the cut of your jib @juddyrockingcloggs!

I grate. If you have a block of cheese you can grate or slice.

You can't slice pre grated cheese.

Chathamhouserules · 10/01/2018 18:58

I hate grating cheese but I still do it because pre grated tastes crap

condepetie · 10/01/2018 18:58

I grate my own cheese but do buy the prechopped veg on occasion - carrot sticks or grated carrot for salads, for example

unicornfarts · 10/01/2018 18:58

I'd ask her whether she's noticed that home-grated cheese does not keep in the same way as pre-grated stuff does, and has she wondered just what it is they have to add to make it behave that way?

Same applies for a lot of shop bought food! It's quite an insight to spend some time only eating what you can make or pick from a plant.....really reminds you of what they do to food before it gets to the shops.

JackieReacher · 10/01/2018 18:59

I do buy frozen chopped garlic and ginger though

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 10/01/2018 18:59

No grating here. It's thrilling.

CheshireChat · 10/01/2018 18:59

I like grated cheese and buy it regularly as it's the same price at Iceland and the like.

Flavour wise, because I like mild cheese it doesn't really matter, if you prefer mature cheddar then it makes sense to grate if yourself.

I grate the vast majority of my veg though.

gunsandbanjos · 10/01/2018 18:59

Glad to see I’m not the only one!

I did also mention all the extra packaging and plastic she was using in the pre packaged veg but she didn’t seem to give a shit.

I wouldn't buy pre-grated cheese; there isn't the same range of cheese available and I always imagine it would dry up very quickly if not used. However, I could see the point of buying it if you'd find it difficult to use a grater, e.g. due to arthritic hands, limited upper body mobility etc.

MrsHathaway · 10/01/2018 18:59

Depends what for. Bagged grated is great for baking (e.g. cheese scones).

I have a rotary grater to save fingertips and labour (because the DC can do their own).

Soubriquet · 10/01/2018 19:00

Noooo.

It's always really stale and hard. Not at all nice.

Least grated cheese at home is crumbly and worth the time to grate.

Though I have been looking at mandolins

AdaColeman · 10/01/2018 19:00

I've never bought grated cheese, it's quick and easy to do it at home. Also I think the grated cheese must oxidise while on the shelf, so won't taste as good as freshly grated cheese.

Smarmydrippings · 10/01/2018 19:00

The only cheese I've ever purchased pre grated was mozzarella for pizza.
I only made that mistake once. It's was rank.

GabsAlot · 10/01/2018 19:00

er no im not buying two types of bloody cheese

NotCornflakes · 10/01/2018 19:01

Grater and chopper, signing in! I do buy cheese slices sometimes though.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 10/01/2018 19:01

I have an electric heater and I bloody love it.

Idontdowindows · 10/01/2018 19:01

Chop and grate everything myself. The only thing I make an exception for is the bags of potatoes for frying IF I'm in too much of a hurry to peel, chop and pre-cook myself. Other than that, it's all whole.

I even have bone scissors..... Shock

CheshireChat · 10/01/2018 19:01

And for some reason I dislike frozen garlic/ginger/ onions, I find they have no flavour when everything else frozen is fine.

Other than stir fry veg.

whosebootsaretheseshoes · 10/01/2018 19:02

Another grating hater here, but would rather do that or get DD to do it than use the ready grated stuff.

Rejoiner · 10/01/2018 19:02

WE have an electric grated primed and ready to go on the kitchen counter.

The only thing I buy pre done us swede

gunsandbanjos · 10/01/2018 19:03

@keepthebloodynoisedown I totally understand if someone needs to buy it, anyone with dexterity issues would struggle to grate or chop and it must be really helpful.

I buy grated 😱. I only really use sprinkled on pasta or jacket potatoes🤷‍♀️

exLtEveDallas · 10/01/2018 19:03

We buy grated cheese for the dog (Known as "Dog Cheese" along with "Dog Ham" which is that horrible weird chicken roll stuff) and decent cheese for us.
