Who grates cheese anymore?

I accidentally got into a conversation with a woman I don’t know at work today and whilst regaling us with the fact that she never chops anything and buys all veg pre chopped, she seemed aghast that anyone bothers to grate cheese and why would you when you can buy it pre grated.

Maybe because it’s covered in potato starch, expensive and not great quality?

Am I the only cheese grater left?

Eeeewwww, pre grated cheese is rubbery and disgusting. Pre prepared veg is almost as bad!

WhyOhWine · 10/01/2018 19:05

I confess to being a buyer of frozen chopped onion (hate chopping onions). I do grate cheese though.

Kitsharrington · 10/01/2018 19:05

I’m sure I’ve read this before.
Pre-grated cheese is grim.

BeyondThePage · 10/01/2018 19:05

I have a magimix - it grates AND chops.

RowenasDiadem · 10/01/2018 19:05

Has anyone actually tasted it? It's horrible! I grate my own every single time.

plominoagain · 10/01/2018 19:06

Grate and chop here too ! I find it quite restful tbh , a bit of mindless activity .

Ironmanrocks · 10/01/2018 19:06

I buy grated cheese. I also buy solid. So use solid for jacket potatoes, I only buy grated for cauliflower cheese as I cannot grate the amount I need for that! Its not expensive though - I buy it on offer and its often as cheap as block cheese. I now feel ashamed though! Blush

Parker231 · 10/01/2018 19:06

I buy grated cheese (can’t taste the difference), prepared vegetables and salads and jacket potatoes in a box. Am always short of time so anything which gives me some time back and an easier life.

glow1984 · 10/01/2018 19:06

The only prepared veg I have is frozen, and I do grate cheese. Im sure the pre-done stuff is more expensive!

kissbeforelippy · 10/01/2018 19:06

I buy grated mozzarella but cheddar gets grated in our house. Like MrsH we have a rotary grater as pink, bloody cheese is not good look.

MeganChips · 10/01/2018 19:06

I buy pre-grated Mozzarella for lasagne. It’s a pain to do from balls and it’s ok melted.

Never anything else though.

Gatehouse77 · 10/01/2018 19:07

Very occasionally I buy grated mozzarella for pizzas but that's about it. I do use cheat garlic though...hangs head in shame Grin

CauliflowerBalti · 10/01/2018 19:07

Pre-grated cheese is vile.

When I’m feeling decadent I buy pre-chopped onion though. I hate chopping onions.

tobee · 10/01/2018 19:07

I buy both. I like both. ShockShockShockSo shoot me!

SauvignonBlanche · 10/01/2018 19:07

Pre-grated cheese looks vile!
I do buy chopped frozen onion as it makes me cry.

rookiemere · 10/01/2018 19:08

I buy it because I'm lazy. I also buy pre-sliced for DS's pack lunches.
I also use frozen garlic as its a lot quicker and doesn't make my fingers smell.

Gillian1980 · 10/01/2018 19:09

We grate.
The pre-grated stuff seems dried out to me and I like choosing a nicer cheddar than the basic mild or mature on offer pre-grated.

GoldilocksAndTheThreePears · 10/01/2018 19:09

Pre-grated is the only way I can have cheese so I love it, pre-prep veg is very expensive so rarely get it but for people with issues with hands or standing or anything it's a god-send. As I only manage to get fresh cooked food every few weeks when I visit my parents I need something for all the crap I eat.

Njordsgrrrl · 10/01/2018 19:09

My BF thinks I'm a wrong-un for grating it at all because why would you own a grater when you can just slice it thinly with a knife Confused

Groovee · 10/01/2018 19:10

I grate it when I want it. Dd grates it and gets it everywhere.

Gillian1980 · 10/01/2018 19:10

I do buy frozen diced onions though to avoid the tears.

Bowerbird5 · 10/01/2018 19:10

I grate cheese and I chop all my veg.

Yogagirl123 · 10/01/2018 19:10

DH often grates cheese, the pre packed is awful!

nakedscientist · 10/01/2018 19:11

Good actual Lord! Of course we grate our own cheese.

I like the cut of your jib @juddyrockingcloggs!

We GRATE our jib as well!

FreddieClaryHorshieLion · 10/01/2018 19:11

Yes, I grate cheese. But not with a cheese grater. I wonder what the English term is?
