Is it snobby of me to not want it in my bedroom?

DP wants us to have a TV in the bedroom.

We already have a massive TV in the living room, when actually when I lived alone, I never had one in the first place (would just stream films if in the mood for watching something).

I told him it just didn't sit right with me, a TV in the bedroom, and he said I was being a snob.

But I'm right aren't I?

Can anyone help me pinpoint why exactly it feels wrong? It just does to me, anyway!

Have you got a telly in your bedroom?

Not really snobby.
Just differing in opinions.
I have always had a t.v. in the bedroom though.

CheeseGirl4 · 10/01/2018 07:17

I've never had a TV in my bedroom and wouldn't want one either, but I know a lot who do.

nutbrownhare15 · 10/01/2018 07:18

Tv is bad for sleep, I feel it would also stop you interacting with your partner. I'm trying to limit the amount of tv I watch anyway as it turns everyone in my house into an irritable zombie. Just my personal.opinion, I've never had a tv in my room.

SuburbanRhonda · 10/01/2018 07:19

This issue does divide people.

I would never have a tv in my bedroom. I can imagine that the disagreements you’re already having wouldn’t end if you gave in and got one - he’d probably be wanting to watch when you wanted to sleep, for example.

Sounds like tv is just not part of your lifestyle but you’ve already compromised by having one in the living room. Don’t give in!

Wheelywheel · 10/01/2018 07:19

Yanbu, it's terrible for your sleep.

I would be dubious too. What happens if he wants to watch tv in bed but you want to sleep?

alotalotalot · 10/01/2018 07:19

Snobby is the wrong word. Just personal preference.

Veterinari · 10/01/2018 07:19

Nope. It disrupts your sleep patterns - experts recommend no electronics/screen time in the bedroom.

I have a kindle fire that I use if I want a lazy Sunday morning with coffee but i don’t use screens before bed.

Would that work as a compromise?

Knaffedoff · 10/01/2018 07:20

I don't have a tv in my bedroom and would love one, but dh refuses. As the bedroom id designed as a restful place, he trumps my decision as i know the tv would impact both our sleep routines

RebootYourEngine · 10/01/2018 07:20

I have a tv in my bedroom. I quite like coming home after a long day and watching a bit of tv in bed.

I do slightly judge size of tvs in bedrooms though. I know someone who has a 50inch tv in a room that is a small double room. To me that looks quite chavvy.

TheMamaYo · 10/01/2018 07:21

I would never have a tv in the bedroom. Nothing snobby about it!

Velocitractor · 10/01/2018 07:22

I was the same as you OP, never liked a telly in the bedroom. Then last year (after 38 years of telly-free bedrooms!) I had BPPV (Vertigo) which resulted in several days of my having to lie flat on my back on my bed. DP moved an old telly into the bedroom (godsend) and after I recovered We just kept it there. We use it maybe a few times a week and it's actually really nice to go the whole pj's, brush teeth thing and then half an hour of something before falling asleep. Also lazy weekend mornings watching cartoons with the kids in our bed is super cosy.

Bitsandbobsalot · 10/01/2018 07:22

Not snobby at all. I had this argument with my dh when we redecorated our bedroom I won by telling him there’s only two things we should be doing in the bedroom and watching tv isn’t one of them Grin

GlitterUnicornsAndAllThatJazz · 10/01/2018 07:23

@SuburbanRhonda
Oh I won't! We already have his sofa because it was admittedly bigger and comfier than mine. It pulls out into a massive almost bed like contraption. Its a small 2-bed flat we live in, so I kind of think, in this small space, do you really need two separate rooms in which to loll about in gazing up at a screen? FFS!

But I'm interested in why it divides people - I guess one camp sees it as total comfort: why wouldn't you want to be able to lie in bed and watch a film? Bliss!
The other camp sees it as: there's already a dedicated room for lounging and watch: it's called a lounge. The bedroom should be a safe haven of peace and quiet.

He said he can get wireless headphones so it wouldnt disturb me noise wise but I still dont like the idea - which means it gows further than a noise issue but I cant figure out what!

We have a small tv in our bedroom
But , we only use it to put the news on in the morning
( though I do put the radio on from the tv if I’m cleaning upstairs )

FluffyWhiteTowels · 10/01/2018 07:24

Why do you need a TV in the bedroom. Is it to be warm during the winter and turn heating off earlier?

I don't think it's snobby to not want a tv in the bedroom. I think it's choice.

TittyGolightly · 10/01/2018 07:25

We have a TV and Blu-ray player in our room. It’s very rarely used, but brilliant if DD is poorly and wants to watch a film or it’s raining outside and we all want a family movie.

GlitterUnicornsAndAllThatJazz · 10/01/2018 07:26

And I'm a hypocrite because obviously I dont have a problem with reading books or stuff on your phone in the bedroom. I dont even have a problem with him watching something on his laptop in the bed. I think it must be just its physical presence, the fact that it would always be there and taking up visual space, that bothers me

I loved having a tv in my bedroom. I’ve switched all the rooms downstairs around so now we have two sitting rooms, and brought the telly down, but I’m tempted to get another one for upstairs. Lazy sundays in bed watching crap telly are golden.

Notso · 10/01/2018 07:29

I wouldn't want one in my room and thankfully DH is on the same page. We spent a long time living out of a bedroom when we first got together wishing we had a whole house to sprawl in, so when we finally did we were adamant we'd only watch TV downstairs. We did for a while have an old TV linked to a DVD player in our room that was only used for poorly kids or sleepovers.

GetOffTheTableMabel · 10/01/2018 07:30

I’ve always told my dh that tv in the bedroom would be bad for our sex life. I believe it too. If I’m not so exhausted that I fall asleep immediately then we should take that time to have sex not watch telly. He has found it a compelling argument Grin

UrsulaPandress · 10/01/2018 07:32

We don't. It's just not something I feel the need for.

Chienrouge · 10/01/2018 07:40

I’ve never had one in my bedroom and never would, but it’s just personal preference.
No point for us, we have a 4 and 2 year old so lying in bed watching TV at the weekends is never going to happen! And we have a lounge to watch TV in the evenings, so can’t see the point in having one in the bedroom.
Actually though, left to it DH would definitely have one in the bedroom.

PrimeraVez · 10/01/2018 07:42

We have a small(ish) one in our bedroom and it is useful in the mornings when DS comes in and can be pacified with Peppa blood Pig for half an hour. Also, when DH wants to watch football, I often go up to bed early and watch something on Netflix.

However, in my experience, it can be a slippery slope. I hate falling asleep with the TV on as I think it really affects my sleep. So at the first sign of one of us starting to nod off, it goes off. Same with if one of us just wants to sleep, the other won't put it on. Realistically, it's probably only one 1-2 nights a week.

Notso · 10/01/2018 07:43

He said he can get wireless headphones so it wouldnt disturb me noise wise but I still dont like the idea - which means it gows further than a noise issue but I cant figure out what!
Never mind the noise it's the light that's a problem too, I have a friend who can only fall asleep with a TV on as a hangover from feeling scared/lonely on her own at uni. Sharing a hotel room with her is virtually impossible

Bluesheep8 · 10/01/2018 07:43

Not snobby just personal choice as a pp said. We've never had a tv in the bedroom. We have a 3 bedroom house and own one tv which is in the lounge.
