Is it snobby of me to not want it in my bedroom?

DP wants us to have a TV in the bedroom.

We already have a massive TV in the living room, when actually when I lived alone, I never had one in the first place (would just stream films if in the mood for watching something).

I told him it just didn't sit right with me, a TV in the bedroom, and he said I was being a snob.

But I'm right aren't I?

Can anyone help me pinpoint why exactly it feels wrong? It just does to me, anyway!

Have you got a telly in your bedroom?

Sorry, do realize it's an escape for those who are confined to their beds.

TheHodgeHeg · 12/01/2018 01:34

I don't see the point of a TV in the bedroom unless it's not your house. When we lived with PIL's we had a TV in our room so we could watch what we wanted. Now we just have one in the living room cause there's no need for more than one TV when there's only one group of people iyswim.

Personally I find it more comfortable to sit on the sofa and watch TV than in bed.

Ineke · 12/01/2018 02:54

Nothing snobby about it. But from a health perspective, it's not a good idea to have a TV in your bedroom. I use an ioniser to clean the air because of asthma, I would never have a TV where I sleep more evidence is showing how important sleep is for mental and physical health and so I try to keep my bedroom a calm sanctuary so sleep is good, no matter how short.

How else do you watch porn whilst having sex with your husband ? It works for us.

Bumsnetnetbums · 12/01/2018 07:16

Shock ^^

MrO1 · 12/01/2018 07:45

In our house for a very long time we didn’t even have a TV, same as you we would just stream online what we actually wanted to watch. I personally wouldn’t want a TV in my bedroom, despite the fact that many times we watched things online whilst in bed on a cold winter night.
Bedroom is for other things- not necessarily for watching TV.

mumof3boys33 · 12/01/2018 08:22

Catra..no such thing as fibre where we live. No mobile signal either and no I don't live in the middle of nowhere. 3 miles from a very large town.

labazs · 12/01/2018 08:33

guess everyone different but a big no for me

Like it😂

I watch tennis. At 3am in the morning I'm not going downstairs in the unheated living room. That's just one of many reasons. However, I don't like it in the bedroom. I'm a very complicated person.

Tv's are fine in the boudoir

Unless they are automatically popping out of some hideous crushed velvet/faux leather sleigh bed.

ChilliMum · 12/01/2018 08:56

Older kids here so we have a family portable. It's not networked so only dvds or we can stream Netflix on it but it gets passed around if there are sleepovers, sickness etc.

I hate a TV in the bedroom but it is lively now and again in winter to put my pj's on early and watch a movie in bed Grin

I think it's a good compromise and lives the store room when not needed.

Apparently, according to the ancient art of Feng Shui, a TV in the bedroom promotes infidelity!

Sparklingbrook · 12/01/2018 09:15

Feng Shui is a load of cobblers not particularly believable.

RhiannonOHara · 12/01/2018 09:58

Pretty sure telly didn't exist when feng shui was being developed anyway. Grin

Smollenski · 12/01/2018 09:59

We don't have a tv in our bedroom, but we both have tablets for reading and sometimes I'll plug in my headphones and watch something on iplayer if I can't sleep. We've been together for 25+ years, though. I'm not sure why it's 'snobby' to not want a tv in your room. Sounds like toys are being thrown out of prams...

Haha. Don’t think they should have a place in the bedroom. However, neith should the type of ghastly bed you describe or one of those with the 3 foot high paddded headboard.

RoseWhiteTips · 12/01/2018 11:01

...neither

Lemog · 12/01/2018 11:22

Not snobby at all, the issue of having a telly in the bedroom has never come up in our household but if it did, I would dig my heels in and flatly refuse to let it happen.

curlilox · 12/01/2018 12:12

I don't have a TV in the bedroom. Bedrooms are for sleeping and TV doesn't help. I didn't allow our DC to have TVs in their rooms either, until they were 16, despite protests that "Everyone else does."

RainyApril · 12/01/2018 12:58

Whether it's snobby or not depends on your motivation for the choice.

Lots of good reasons for not having a tv in your bedroom, but if your primary motivation is it's a bit downmarket/chavvy/working class then that's the definition of a snob.

katzensocken · 12/01/2018 19:59

It's not snobby. I've always been in tiny rooms so having a TV in the bedroom just clutters up the space, though I did have TVs (old CRTs, even a black and white one) in my room as a teenager. Not as much to watch then so I wasn't using it all the time.

When I was recovering from surgery a couple of years ago I was on bedrest for a couple of weeks and we had my old Mac computer up opposite the bed so I could stream Netflix on it. That was useful, but after a while I was more mobile so I just shifted to the couch in the living room and watched stuff there.

We do like to curl up in bed sometimes and watch something though, especially if either one of us feels rough. Our compromise is a tablet, one of the ones which can be propped up on the keypad. So we stream Netflix there and and just put it on the bedside table.

MRSsqueak · 13/01/2018 19:41

we have a massive 50 inch plazma in our bedroom it is bigger than the one we have in our livingroom. BUT this is only because we got it cheap £70 from a family member and the stand was broken so it could only put it on the wall. the wall we would want to put it on in the livingroom just would not take the weight of that tv so its in our room. we dont use it a lot tbh plazmas eat electricity and we have better things to do in the bedroom Wink we do love putting a movie on and watching a film in our bed with the dc's tho and dh used it to play playstation on it when he was recovering from a operation

Bumsnetnetbums · 14/01/2018 12:27

Omg mrs youre such a chav with that plasma screen
Why the fick is a tv snobby? Does the class stealth boast now include electronics? Jesus! Only board games allowed in our house. Grin
