Is it snobby of me to not want it in my bedroom?

DP wants us to have a TV in the bedroom.

We already have a massive TV in the living room, when actually when I lived alone, I never had one in the first place (would just stream films if in the mood for watching something).

I told him it just didn't sit right with me, a TV in the bedroom, and he said I was being a snob.

But I'm right aren't I?

Can anyone help me pinpoint why exactly it feels wrong? It just does to me, anyway!

Have you got a telly in your bedroom?

I don't think you're being snobby not to want one in your bedroom! What a silly thing to say. Your bedroom should be a space where you feel comfortable and snoozy and nice and everything. If for you that means a tv is not right, then no tv, easypeasy :)

extinctspecies · 10/01/2018 08:28

I'm going to stick my neck out here and say, yes, I think it's a bit downmarket/naff to have a TV in the bedroom.

And it's bad for your sleep patterns.

Chienrouge · 10/01/2018 08:28

We only have one tv which a lot of people seem to find quite strange

I thought that was fairly normal! We only have one. I imagine when the DC are teens they might have one in their room, but at the moment there’s no need for more than one. If DH wants to watch something I’m not bothered about I read, or exercise, or do some crafting. Same the other way, if I’m watching something he doesn’t want to watch he does something else.

HazelBite · 10/01/2018 08:29

Gosh, we have 3 TV's in downstairs rooms in our house, and one in each bedroom (4) we are a household of 6 adults and we all like to watch different things/play computer games. Our "main" set is in one of our lounge's and is linked to the sky box.
I love TV in the bedroom, and as a sufferer of tinitus I need it to get to sleep. DH likes to watch MotD on a Sunday morning before he gets up.
I know plenty of people who think having a TV in the bedroom is naff until they have a a health issue confining them to bed.
Now being surgically attached to your smart phone is naff!

GlitterUnicornsAndAllThatJazz · 10/01/2018 08:30

@extinctspecies
I agree it feels "downmarket" - but why?!

OP posts:
Amanduh · 10/01/2018 08:31

We have one, but it’s never on an night. More for when someone is ill in bed/having a lazy morning etc.
Personal preference I think

LaughingLlama · 10/01/2018 08:31

I love having a tv in my bedroom. I spend a lot of time in my bedroom though.

I come to bed st 8pm some nights and snuggle up watching tv.
That said I'm on my own most of the time.
Tbh TV does not sound like something that matters to you very much and so I can imagine it would cause issues in the bedroom if your dh wanted it on and you didn't. It's not just the sound but changing light that would bother you if trying to sleep whilst he was watching it.

Amanduh · 10/01/2018 08:32

Oh, but if your argument is that it’s ‘downmarket’ he’s right, you are being a snob.

Piffle11 · 10/01/2018 08:34

YANBU - when we moved house my DH had a large TV put on the wall opposite our bed ... he didn't consult me, just presumed it would be ok as he had one in his previous bedroom before we moved in together. I hate it: the noise and the light means I can't sleep. DH claims he cannot get to sleep without it on, I can't get to sleep with it on. I tried an eye mask and pulling the duvet up over my ears, but obviously this doesn't work on warm evenings, and it doesn't really work anyway. I ended up lying there fuming. When DS2 was born I moved into his room for 6 months to night feed without disturbing DH and it was bliss. Also, the lights from the bloody sky box and this other TV device he has means it's like mission control opposite our bed. Don't do it as you will regret it. I no longer sleep in main bedroom.

cakecakecheese · 10/01/2018 08:34

Snobby seems an odd choice of words, like others have said it's personal choice. My ex husband liked having the TV on in the bedroom as it sent him off to sleep but it disturbed me and almost every time he'd be asleep, the TV would be on and I'd have to retrieve the remote and turn it off. In the end I said the TV goes or I do. He then would end up falling asleep on the sofa watching it but at least I could get a restful night's sleep!

Can't he just have a tablet and earphones if he wants to watch something in bed?

Runningoutofusernames · 10/01/2018 08:37

There's a lot of evidence that TVs in bedrooms harm sleep - science is on your side! Smile

Loonoonow · 10/01/2018 08:39

We have a small tv in the bedroom which DH watches the news on in the morning and I have on when doing my make up/drying my hair. A month ago I would have said that was more than enough so,would probably be with you OP.

However I was ill over Christmas and spent the best part of three weeks lying in bed and I got very bored of squinting at a tiny little screen 8 feet away and the limited range of channels. So my job for this week is to buy a 32'' smart tv for that corner and I am very much looking forward to the occasional early night watching movies in my nice warm bed.

WorldWideWanderer · 10/01/2018 08:39

I think if there are two of you, a TV isn't such a good idea as it may stop you interacting with your partner....on the other hand, you may want to snuggle up in bed and watch a film together, which may be nice?
TV in the bedroom has nothing to do with whether you are a snob or not.

I'm on my own and so love having a TV in the bedroom. It doesn't interfere with my sleep either....the number of times I have an early night and have something on the TV but fall asleep anyway, only to wake hours later and it's still on.... Talk programmes like the news channel actually lull me to sleep so it doesn't necessarily interfere with sleep, depends on the person and what you're watching....

EmmaGrundyForPM · 10/01/2018 08:40

I don't think it's naff to.have a tv in your bedroom or snobby not to have one. Its just personal preference.

We only have one tv in our house and it's in our living room. We had an extension built a few years ago and created a big kitchen/diner/family room. The builder insisted we have a tv point put in there as we'd watch TV there he thought but in fact we don't and we've never bought a second tv to put in there. We don't watch much tv anyway. I guess if I'm snobby about anything it's the idea of eating in front of the tv. We always eat at the table.

Dh is very clear that he doesn't want a tv in the bedroom. I'm more ambivalent but am.happy not to have one there. We occasionally watch something on a laptop in bed but I mean very occasionally - maybe every 6 months?

gamerchick · 10/01/2018 08:40

I agree it feels "downmarket" - but why?!

That’s why he’s saying you’re a snob!

It’s a personal preference thing, I dont personally have one in my bedroom.

Maybe suggest the compromise to your bloke? Tell him if you go down the separate bedroom route so you don’t have to be disturbed, then he can do what he wants.

00100001 · 10/01/2018 08:41

Binary Household Rules for TVs

  1. No TVs in any bedrooms, including the guest room

  2. there can never be more TVs than people that live in the house

  3. nobody in a normal sized UK house has a room big enough to warrant a curved screen.

  4. no, they really don't.

  5. when you pay for the Sky subscription, that's when we will have Sky DS14.

timeisnotaline · 10/01/2018 08:44

If he doesn’t agree that the priority for bedrooms is sleep (at regular hours anyway) then it doesn’t sound like a good idea. It doesn’t sound like he would appreciate that the lights bother you etc , turn it off on request, make sure
It’s never on all night disturbing sleep , he is all ‘you won’t even notice as I can wear headphones’ which isn’t the right starting point. He can watch tv In the lounge, I assume you don’t have the same option of using your other bedroom plus it’s not fair to make you.

MrsLettuce · 10/01/2018 08:45

We had a tv in the bedroom for a while when the DC were tiny. Two under two. Both non-sleepers. It meant I could lay down and feed / half doze while the older of the two snuggled up to me and watched CBeebies. It was an absolute godsend.

Banished the TV as soon as that phase was over and didn't miss it once. That was about 8 years ago now.

whiskyowl · 10/01/2018 08:48

Get a mirror TV. Then you can pretend it isn't a TV if anyone sees the space! Grin

Seriously, I would never ever have had a TV in the bedroom. But at the moment my house is being trashed by builders, and the only place to put the telly was on the dressing table opposite the bed. And I have to admit, it does feel quite nice to be able to slob out in front of it. I am totally miserable at the moment, though (due to said building work) so curling up in a ball and hiding feels nice. Smile

Starlight2345 · 10/01/2018 08:51

I am a Lp . It works great for me . I watch tv in bed means I can turn heating off . Also as a childminder it means my son can come in from school and watch Tv in my room and get some space from minded children sometimes

mydogisthebest · 10/01/2018 08:56

Most of my friends seem to have at least 2 tv's so think it strange that we only have 1.

They seem to watch different things from their partner so one will watch in the living room and one in another room (usually the bedroom).

Me and DH compromise on things we watch. We like a lot of the same sort of programmes but other things we will record and take it in turns to watch. When DH is watching something I am not interested in I will usually read or be on my laptop.

We don't want to spend evenings in different rooms

amusedbush · 10/01/2018 09:02

DH and I can't agree on this at all. I gave in and got my old 22" TV out of storage to put in our bedroom but it was short lived because he would watch super loud/violent things while I was trying to sleep. Not only was the noise a problem but the flickering light stopped me from sleeping too. I don't sleep well at the best of times and I noticed that the day after he had been watching something in bed, I woke up feeling almost hungover as I'd slept so badly.

FreddieClaryHorshieLion · 10/01/2018 09:06

I’d rather have a tv in the bedroom than the living room.

But I don’t really want a tv in the bedroom either!

Although I do feel tempted by the posters talking about how the older DC watches tv whereas the younger DC gets their bottle. That would be a lovely idea for Sunday morning....

Anyhow, I’d hate the idea of lying next to DH whilst he was watching tv with the headphones on. Also... I’d probably be upset / annoyed by the light coming from the tv.

We currently don’t have a tv, btw.

Julie8008 · 10/01/2018 09:06

A TV in the bedroom is a necessity. Its needed to get to sleep.

Shineystrawberrylover · 10/01/2018 09:07

Not snobby - a rather empty counter argument. Just sensible a tv hardly helps with sleep. Devices are very disruptive to sleep.
I don't think tv in the bedroom is a taste thing. Just an attitude to sleep thing.
