Is it snobby of me to not want it in my bedroom?

DP wants us to have a TV in the bedroom.

We already have a massive TV in the living room, when actually when I lived alone, I never had one in the first place (would just stream films if in the mood for watching something).

I told him it just didn't sit right with me, a TV in the bedroom, and he said I was being a snob.

But I'm right aren't I?

Can anyone help me pinpoint why exactly it feels wrong? It just does to me, anyway!

Have you got a telly in your bedroom?

I sleep like a log. So does dh.

Rebeccaslicker · 10/01/2018 09:08

I am exactly the same - and yes I do think I'm being snobby. See also televisions in the kitchen.

But I can't help it, it's how I feel about them!

we've just moved and our bedroom is now v big - I want a chaise longue or chair or something along a big empty wall; DP doesn't. I can see the compromise being a flat screen tv above a chaise longue.... 🙈🙈🙈

OCSockOrphanage · 10/01/2018 09:08

We don't, partly because the location would interrupt the view (huge south facing picture window) and there's no suitable wall space. We had one temporarily while DH was recovering from an operation but it was on a small trolley and was always in the way.

JennyOnAPlate · 10/01/2018 09:08

We don’t have a tv in the bedroom at the moment but I can see that changing when the dc are old enough to be up later than me. At the moment they’re in bed by 8 so dh and I have the tv to ourselves all evening.

On the other hand though, I’m never going to allow the dc to have TVs in their bedrooms so is it hypocritical if I get one in mine??

theunsure · 10/01/2018 09:09

We have one but rarely use it, I don't watch it just before bed.
Mostly used if one of us is ill or if we want to watch different things at the same time.
It is useful to have but it can lead to bad sleep habits when you watch it at night. I do love getting under the duvet and watching a film during the day though! Not that I get the opportunity very often but did over Christmas.
I have had a TV in the bedroom since I was about 12 though, including when I lived alone in a tiny house.

blackteasplease · 10/01/2018 09:09

I never have and agree it's bad sleep hygiene. Thst said, so is watching on a tablet in bed which you could do anyway!

Chienrouge · 10/01/2018 09:12

I also think when reading these threads that we must be one of very few families who don’t own a tablet!

Scabbersley · 10/01/2018 09:12

Why on earth is it bad sleep hygiene? What's the difference between watching a film in bed, turning it off and going to sleep, or watching a film downstairs, turning it off and going to bed?

Phones and I pads must be worse surely

Scabbersley · 10/01/2018 09:13

Chienrouge we don't either. Never seen the need for one.

Chienrouge · 10/01/2018 09:20

Me either Scabbersley, they’re just like a smart phone but with a bigger screen aren’t they?

PocketCoffeeEspresso · 10/01/2018 09:21

DP hates the idea of a TV in the bedroom, I couldn't care less (although I don't find sitting in bed particularly comfortable, so don't think I'd really use it anyway)

Can't he just use an ipad if he wants to watch TV in bed? It's what we do (DP more than me, which has a certain amount of irony)

Creambun2 · 10/01/2018 09:22

Having a television in the bedroom is awful - really common.

FreddieClaryHorshieLion · 10/01/2018 09:25

But why would I want a tv in the bedroom?

  1. It’s for sleeping. (And sex... if we have the time and energy....)
  2. DH and I divide the nights into his and my nights / when we have to feed DD2. I’d be rather afraid that either of us would start watching tv during our nights and thereby disturb the other one’s sleep. With flickering lights etc....

As for the tv in other rooms. Why?

The kitchen is for cooking and in our cas also eating (we have a kitchen supper on most days.) Having a tv in the kitchen is a bit like having a tv in the loo imo. It seems like a distraction / good way to waste time. And also a good way to keep us from connecting. From talking about our days etc whilst eating....

We currently don’t have a tv (but sometimes watch something on the computer...)

EggsonHeads · 10/01/2018 09:28

Having a tv in the bedroom feels really wrong but in some ways it's a bit better than having it in your sitting room. At least that way your children aren't exposed to it. If I had to pick I would hide it away in the bedroom in a wardrobe or something. But don't do both-that's just weird and unnecessary.

NeversayNever2 · 10/01/2018 09:28

Well I suffered insomnia a good part of my life and I live having TV in my bedroom and sleep really well with it, definitely one of my ultimate luxuries... Esp it's come into its own when been ill. Esp when I have been ill with the young child! I love it. I thinking your denying him quite a big thing.

NeversayNever2 · 10/01/2018 09:29

Sorry that should read I had insomnia before I ever had TV in room and now I sleep really well with it.

DramaAlpaca · 10/01/2018 09:29

It's honestly never occurred to me to have a TV in the bedroom. Two downstairs is enough. The DC never asked for them either, though as soon as the eldest started working he bought himself one for his room.

Sparklingbrook · 10/01/2018 09:29

I have always had a TV in the bedroom. I like watching TV in bed on a Sunday morning and I have it on as I am getting dressed in the week.

I don't care what anyone else thinks (nobody goes in our bedroom anyway), and my sleep hygiene is just fine. When I want to go to sleep I switch the TV off. Simple.

Maybe some people would be up watching it all night or something.

EggsonHeads · 10/01/2018 09:30

@Scabbersly in terms of sleep hygiene the idea is to create a Pavlovian association between bed and sleep so it is better to watch tv downstairs before bed rather than in bed before going to sleep.

NeversayNever2 · 10/01/2018 09:32

We have timer on our TV so we can turn it off after ten, 15 mins etc Grin

TammySwansonTwo · 10/01/2018 09:33

Hmm, can't think why he called you snobby...

I spent 18-25 in flat shares so always had a TV in my room then. Due to health issues there are times when I need to stay in bed and it's invaluable then. Ours isn't even hooked up to an aerial, just a box that accesses our server. Not sure what the difference is between this and watching a laptop in bed, except that it's less awkward

SmittenApril · 10/01/2018 09:33

We don't have one, just don't really see a need. We have 2 DC and I want to avoid them having one for as long as possible and I think it's easier if I model the same.

We do have a small one in the spare room though which I use when ironing in the evenings and sometimes the kids go in on a Sunday morning to watch Netflix or something. I find that a good compromise.

Sparklingbrook · 10/01/2018 09:35

I assume that TVs in hotel rooms are a no-no too if you don't like TVs in bedrooms.

ToastyFingers · 10/01/2018 09:36

I would quite like a tv in the bedroom but DH isnt keen.
We're not really into most tv, but a good documentary is great for sparking conversation, and we love watching stand-up together.

I can see where he's coming from though, we could do with more sleep, not less.

Rebeccaslicker · 10/01/2018 09:37

Wow Creambun2, spoken like a true Tory! Wink
