To think Oprah being the potus would be amazing

Female, black and lesbian would restore my faith in the world. Trump's supporters would hate that and she seems far more suited than him. She would walk it right?

OP posts:
AnnPerkins · 09/01/2018 13:47

If I were American I would vote for Martin Sheen or Rob Lowe, for obvious reasons.

@TheCraicDealer or Ron Swanson obviously.

AnnPerkins · 09/01/2018 13:48

*Or Alison Janney!

How could I forget her? Shock

Roussette · 09/01/2018 13:49

Why on earth does it have to be a celebrity? Imagine here.... they'd be laughed out the room.

Oprah fights the inequalities that suit her agenda and are we now saying that to be the POTUS you don't need any experience or qualifications? If the liberal response to Trump is Oprah, they are just as batshit crazy as the crazy christian conservatives in power now. Democrats need to concentrate on the journey ahead to oust revolting Trump and his cronies, Oprah is just a distraction, let's hope this just dies a death.

Ieatcake · 09/01/2018 14:09

I mean it doesn't have to be a celeb but the COTUS seem to like voting for one to be the president..

I know a kid who likes to stick crayons up his nose.
Just because they like to do it doesn't make it good.

ShatnersWig · 09/01/2018 14:20

Taylor Reminds me of this.... And he'd be excellent. If he was American. And real.

ColonelJackONeil · 09/01/2018 14:23

I do agree with the idea of the president being a figurehead like our queen with little real power. Then you could have any celebrity you liked and they couldn't nuke the world.

SilverySurfer · 09/01/2018 14:31

Could this be her running mate?

This seems to think it's a possibility: www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2017/11/15/harvey-weinstein-2020-sexual-predators-guide-winning-elections-steven-strauss-column/860300001/

LambMadras · 09/01/2018 15:29

Can't we just choose someone for president that is actually qualified for the role? Why would a black woman tv star be any better than a white male tv star? Just choose the right person for the role regardless of their gender or how many fucking minority boxes they can tick.

Oprah as president is a ludicrous idea. But then again so was Trump and looked what happened.

If she's enough money it may sadly become a reality.

sinceyouask · 09/01/2018 15:45

Oprah is a star, but that doesn't mean she should be President. What experience does Oprah have that means she could do the job? People always mention Reagan, but he didn't go straight from showbiz to the Presidency- he was a state governor beforehand.

If you are keen to see a WoC as President, why not one of those already involved in politics? Why is Oprah a better candidate for President of the US than Tammy Duckworth, Catherine Cortez-Masto, Kamala Harris? There are 34 WoC serving as representatives and 4 as delegates in the House and 44 serving as state legislators according to this source.

sinceyouask · 09/01/2018 15:46

Sorry, 444 in state legislature

Tringley · 09/01/2018 15:54

Of course BS would be better, but can you see him getting it?

Nope, I don't. Sanders would be considered a fairly centerist politician in Europe. In many ways he offers less to his country's poor than my country's centre right government led by a mixed race, openly gay man offers ours. But in the US Sanders is considered an extreme left wing choice.

But Kerry came very close and Warren may just have a chance. I've read some of her writing and she really understands how and why ordinary Americans have a lower standard of living and less security than their predecessors. The problem is, she acknowledges there is no easy solutions.

scatterolight · 09/01/2018 16:37

I think the OP's post demonstrates why so many men think women's suffrage was a bad idea. Are the best qualifications for political office a string of identity attributes? Black, female, gay. She's got a hattrick there, quick make her President!

It's this kind of childish thinking that makes me ashamed to be female.

Andrewofgg · 09/01/2018 16:46

I don't care about her gender or her race or her sexuality - I care about the one thing she does share with Trump which is a complete lack of education and never having held elective office. She should stick to the day job.

sinceyouask · 09/01/2018 16:58

What the actual fuck?

It's this kind of childish thinking that makes me ashamed to be female.
It's not being female you should be ashamed of Hmm.

noeffingidea · 09/01/2018 17:11

She might have the potential, but she needs some experience and training first. I would say about 10 years.
I've also heard Dwayne 'the rock' Johnson being touted as a possible candidate. Exactly the same thing goes for him as well.

AngelsSins · 09/01/2018 17:46

Scatter does Trump make you ashamed of men too? Do you see them as childish?

On the one hand I think no, we should stick to politians in these roles. On the other though, what have these politians ever done for women without a fight? Fuck all. So a woman who cares about women? Can't be any worse than privallaged white man after privileged white man. She might actually make things better for women.

What attributes does Trump have that make him right to be president? What qualifications? None. Less than Oprah in fact. So does that mean giving men the vote was a bad idea? Or maybe just giving Americans the right to vote?

Cavender · 09/01/2018 18:24

why so many men think women's suffrage was a bad idea.

Confused

Really? I don’t know any men who think women’s suffrage was a bad idea. I’m amazed that you do Scatter.

Women have had the ability to vote in the U.K. since 1918 (over 30) and 1928 (equalised with men). I’m pretty sure it’s become an accepted baseline over the last 90 years...

You may need to reconsider the men you associate with.

vwlphb · 09/01/2018 18:26

I’m going with the idea that it’s bad to let Americans vote. After all, Obama aside, as far back as I can remember your main options for president have been TV and movie stars and family members of previous presidents.

Cavender · 09/01/2018 18:28

I live in the USA and I’m not sure the UK’s current political situation gives us the right to be sniffy about American voting.

Everyone I know here thinks we’re idiots for voting for Brexit.

vwlphb · 09/01/2018 18:31

That is true, you are idiots for voting for Brexit.

RavingRoo · 09/01/2018 18:57

I think the next president of the US should be qualified. Oprah has a long way to go.

Andrewofgg · 09/01/2018 18:58

Nearly right, Cavender. That's the vote for the House of Commons. They had the local government vote from the 1880s.

But in 65 years in this country I too have never met anyone who thinks female suffrage was a bad idea.

SenecaFalls · 09/01/2018 19:00

Just more than a bit of an overstatement. There were three. (not counting John Quincy Adams since, I assume, he was before you can remember) and Reagan had a career in public service and elected office before he ran for President.
