Feet on my new sofa - AIBU?

This is going to make sound v precious and house proud, which I'm not, but this is a real bugbear for me and I'd like to know if AIBU or WWYD?

I had a playdate at my house today for a few mums and their daughters. One of the mums I've known for about 6 months, and she is lovely, but during the playdate kept climbing on my new sofa and putting her feet on it. It was really annoying me but I didn't say anything as I though I would sound anal. It's not the first time she has done it, and I honestly don't think she believes she is doing anything wrong. We don't put our feet on the sofa, it's just our thing, and I find it really rude when people come to me house and do so.

AIBU? Would you have said something to her?

If you have rules then you need to tell people when they come in.

I sit cross legged or tuck my feet under me, without shoes though.

If you don't tell people they won't know.

GreenTulips · 08/01/2018 19:12

Why was she climbing? Is this the childnor the mother?

Just tell the child to stop doing it 'We don't do X is our house'

Jigglytuff · 08/01/2018 19:12

With shoes on? That's weird. Without shoes, assuming your friend changes her socks daily, her feet are probably cleaner than her trousers!

ThePinkOcelot · 08/01/2018 19:29

Is this the child or the mother climbing on your sofa?

Piratesandpants · 08/01/2018 19:32

With shoes YANBU, without shoes YABU (but she should be sitting, not climbing).

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 08/01/2018 19:33

Shoes rude, socks fine. Which was it?

wineoclock1 · 08/01/2018 19:34

It was the mum not the child. She climbed over the armrest of the chair to sit on the sofa, no particular reason why (ie there was nothing in front of the sofa blocking it). She didn't have shoes on, and your comment about the jeans makes me feel better. I just felt awkward saying something to her. I'd like to invite her again but just don't know how to say something nicely without causing an atmosphere.

People do different things in their homes you cannot expect her to know the rules in yours unless you say.
If you want people to abide by your house rules then you should at least tell them what they are.
Like shoes off at the door.
No feet on furniture.
Downstairs loo for wees only
No cups on the table without a coaster
And so on.

Vitalogy · 08/01/2018 19:40

An adult climbing on the sofa, that's odd.

TheQueenOfWands · 08/01/2018 19:41

If you make guests take off their shoes then maybe her feet were cold?

stickytoffeevodka · 08/01/2018 19:42

What's wrong with socks/bare feet on the sofa? Confused

woodhill · 08/01/2018 19:44

Bit over familiar in someone else's house

Starlighter · 08/01/2018 19:45

I was all for YANBU until I realised this was WITHOUT shoes!

What’s wrong with feet on the sofa?! So you never ever put your feet up on the sofa?! Confused

Fluffyears · 08/01/2018 19:49

Mil put her feet up on my new sofa at Christmas. I think she felt my look as she put them back on floor. Why she felt the need I have no idea. Maybe just jokingly say ‘hey monkey stop climbing!’

pasturesgreen · 08/01/2018 19:51

Well, technically she isn't doing anything wrong. Sounds a very depressing way to live, never being able to put your feet up on your sofa.
I don't think you can really go about reprimanding guests for what would - to most people - be perfectly normal behaviour. She didn't have shoes on, get over yourself.

stickytoffeevodka · 08/01/2018 19:51

I never realised people had issues with feet on the sofa until this thread!

I don't find it remotely comfortable to sit and watch TV sat upright - I always sit with my feet curled up under me or sprawled across DP!

Vitalogy · 08/01/2018 19:53

The woman was CLIMBING!

CosmicCanary · 08/01/2018 19:53

Why would you want to make your mil feel uncomfortable Fluffy?

MrsDustyBusty · 08/01/2018 19:53

Why do so many people buy furniture anf flooring which is not intended for nkrmal use?

Vitalogy · 08/01/2018 19:54

I don't find it remotely comfortable to sit and watch TV sat upright - I always sit with my feet curled up under me or sprawled across DP! Me too, but not on a bloody play date.

oblada · 08/01/2018 19:54

I really can't think of a way to say this nicely. I would definitely be v put off by someone saying that to me.. I'm a bit of a precious cow in my home and people know so no shoes on, no walking on the coffee table (kids!), no eating other than in kitchen/dining room and generally no doing anything that could damage my furniture (other than normal wear and tear).. But even I wouldn't go to the extend of banning socks on sofas... Is there a particular reason for this?

canihaveyourstupidhat · 08/01/2018 19:56

Could you put a blanket or something on the sofa to protect it from feet? It is pretty strange not to allow bare or socked feet on the sofa and I don't think you can ask her not to do it without making her uncomfortable.

Nikephorus · 08/01/2018 19:56

Mil put her feet up on my new sofa at Christmas. I think she felt my look as she put them back on floor. Why she felt the need I have no idea.
Maybe because it's comfortable to tuck your legs up? Maybe to keep her feet warm? Maybe because she could lean against the arm of the sofa better? Confused I never realised people could be quite so anal.

CariadAur · 08/01/2018 19:57

I would suit on the floor in a house with that rule...

Steeley113 · 08/01/2018 19:58

For goodness sake, I thought I’d heard it all when people on mn were saying they go to the bathroom just to break wind or upstairs to change a nappy. Now you can’t even put you feet on the sofa with no shoes Grin
