That pineapples don't grow on trees, but grow in the ground? I'm well educated, went to university (twice), but I had never thought about where my pineapple had come from, and it never occurred to me that the 'chopped' end was on the bottom and not the top!

What didn't you know until recently?

Pineapples - has the words ‘pine’ and ‘apples’ all squished together. Very misleading.
Naughty pineapples.

Trills · 08/01/2018 17:04

I was hoping more for a response along the lines of how many hyenas do we need anyway? when I said we'd run out of them :o

mustbemad17 · 08/01/2018 17:05

Apologies Trills

How many bloody hyenas do we need in the first place?!

Better 😝

ILookedintheWater · 08/01/2018 17:07

You're opening them wrong.. Never open the top, always open the bottom
No! You should open a banana from the top: which is the brown end you can nip to open the crease. If you open it from the bottom you snap off the stalk (like my Mum did when I was a kid) but you are much more likely to either mash the banana or have it fall out of the skin. Be like a monkey split open the top. Bananas grow upwards. the bunches hang down.

PortiaCastis · 08/01/2018 17:09

A group of said hyenas is called a cackle

I knows cos I just googled it

Straycatblue · 08/01/2018 17:09

Everyone has a unique tongue print.

RavingRoo · 08/01/2018 17:11

How have people only just discovered this?

Trills · 08/01/2018 17:11

Much better thank you Flowers

lougle · 08/01/2018 17:11

Ilooked Don't despair, I think your top is the PP's bottom Grin. I always refer to the brown bit as the bottom, and the bit that you say is the bottom, the stalk, or the handle, as the top. But I think we're in agreement, that you need to pinch the flat brown bit, which will split into 3, and peel the strips away from each other, using the stalk as a handle. Am I right? Smile

I found out last year that asbestos is mined, and I've worked in a related field for twenty years.

FreddieClaryHorshieLion · 08/01/2018 17:12

@moreshitandnofuckingredemption
Freddie how many do you buy?!

Too many. Definitely too many.

I honestly don’t know. We ‘made’ our guests take home a pineapple each, I made two pineapple cakes, we made pineapple infused vodka for NYE, have been having it for breakfast...

ILookedintheWater · 08/01/2018 17:17

Am I right? Smile
rightish....I was talking about the brown end but you can't call it the bottom when it grows upwards and is therefore the top: it just leads to confusion (clearly Grin)

Bluntness100 · 08/01/2018 17:20

Welll ive learned some stuff on here today. Had no idea pineapples grew on the ground and peanuts in the ground...thanks !

mustbemad17 · 08/01/2018 17:20

A group of meerkats is called a mob or a gang. I loved that when i found out haha

tabbywabby · 08/01/2018 17:23

I'm in my 40's and I have just learned that 'show pineapple' is a concept. What it is, I don't know, but it's a thing. Apparently.

Sammy900 · 08/01/2018 17:23

I'm 38 and I've just found out about pineapples!!

BitOutOfPractice · 08/01/2018 17:23

Yes, but isn't English the only language that doesn't call them ananas or a very close variation of that?

Which in itself is confusing as that looks like bananas without the b Confused

April229 · 08/01/2018 17:25

They don’t actually grow IN the ground. They grow on plants on the ground.

And kippers are a fish - it's herring I think the person who posted that kippers weren't a type of fish meant that they weren't a particular species of fish, they were a fish that had been treated in a particular way. Kippers don't swim around in the sea.

BewareOfDragons · 08/01/2018 17:30

They don't grow in the ground. The new pinapple itself grows in the centre of the plant above ground. And generally, each plant only produces 3 pineapples, 1 at a time, before the plant is ripped out and a new plant is put in, because they get progressively smaller and aren't considered viable beyond that for sale purposes.

(Can you tell I used to live in the sub-tropics where they were grown? The Dole plantation was very informative, and the sold the best fresh pineapple ice cream you could ever taste!

Mitzimaybe · 08/01/2018 17:31

Last time I went to Spain I said ananas and was corrected to piña. Usage seems to have changed.
