That pineapples don't grow on trees, but grow in the ground? I'm well educated, went to university (twice), but I had never thought about where my pineapple had come from, and it never occurred to me that the 'chopped' end was on the bottom and not the top!

What didn't you know until recently?

lougle

Holland is a region and former province on the western coast of the Netherlands. The name Holland is also frequently used informally to refer to the whole of the country of the Netherlands.

FreddieClaryHorshieLion · 08/01/2018 16:40

I’ve recently learned that Bananas don’t grow on trees (but on plants). :)

CowesTwo · 08/01/2018 16:41

Lougle, the name of the country is The Netherlands.

catwoozle · 08/01/2018 16:41

Yes I didn't know the pineapple thing until not that long ago really. In my head they grew on palm type trees.

JaneJeffer · 08/01/2018 16:41

Charolais I blame Black Lace for the shocking ignorance about pineapples.

All together now...

I'm 39 and although I knew about the pineapple thing (think I heard it on an episode of q I), I didn't know about walking bloody bananas!
I'm going to have to goofgle that later.

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/01/2018 16:41

What the hell do you people do all day long? When you should be finding out about various fruits and nuts... well, work, raise children, volunteer. Life, basically!

I thought those berries were 'groups of drupes'.

Mummyoflittledragon · 08/01/2018 16:42

Op
We refer to Holland as the country. It’s actually the Netherlands. Two of the provinces in NL are north and southHolland. Hence the name.

Stickladilove · 08/01/2018 16:42

Cashew fruit is delicious!! Yes the red/orange fruit above the nut.Getting off the black skin from cashew is a tough job.
Iv harvested pineapples, so known since 12

meredintofpandiculation · 08/01/2018 16:43

chowmum - you might be right that hyenas are only children - from wiki: "After parturition, the pseudo-penis [ie the clitoris] is stretched, and loses many of its original aspects; it becomes a slack-walled and reduced prepuce with an enlarged orifice with split lips" Ouch!

MrsTerryPratchett · 08/01/2018 16:44

I bet harvesting pineapples is hard but it sounds soooo romantic.

lougle · 08/01/2018 16:44

"Giving birth is difficult for female hyenas, as the females give birth through their narrow clitoris, and spotted hyena cubs are the largest carnivoran young relative to their mothers' weight. During parturition, the clitoris ruptures in order to facilitate the passage of the young, and may take weeks to heal."

I don't envy the life of hyenas! Shock

Makes human child birth a bit more bearable 😂 Poor hyenas!!

orangewasp · 08/01/2018 16:45

That pineapples don't grow on trees, but grow in the ground? ....what???

Bookaboo · 08/01/2018 16:46

I only buy them as "show pineapples" and have never eaten one.

What is a "show pineapple" ? Please don't tell me you buy it just to brighten up your fruit bowl & then chuck it away?

frogsoup · 08/01/2018 16:46

Charollais the crushing irony of saying 'what do you people do all day long?' while yourself pissing about posting on mumsnet threads about pineapples at 4 in the afternoon. Grin Just like ours, your life is clearly stuffed full to the brim with high cultural pursuits and a love of learning.

mustbemad17 · 08/01/2018 16:46

Another random zoo volunteer 'fact' (i'm not at all convinced by this) is that it is entirely possible for apes to take over the planet.
I think he spent too many evenings watching Planet of the Apes

Summerisdone · 08/01/2018 16:46

I’m 28 and only found out yesterday (from my 14 DSis no less) that Washington DC is NOT in the state of Washington, but is in fact on the opposite side of the USA, on the border of Maryland.

meredintofpandiculation · 08/01/2018 16:47

Don't worry. orangewasp OP says the "in" was a typo. They grow on things a bit like aloes.

mustbemad17 · 08/01/2018 16:47

Summer whaaat? Is it any wonder people like me struggle with geography ffs!!

Chowmum · 08/01/2018 16:47

I think we're only ignorant about things outside our normal lives. Never having seen a peanut or pineapple tree, how would I know? And it's not my life is likely to depend on knowing.

FreddieClaryHorshieLion · 08/01/2018 16:48

Smeaton

Sorry Grin but it’s such a cool banana fact imo.

But whenever I think about banana facts I think of the atheist’s nightmare 🙈

DullAndOld · 08/01/2018 16:48

well if it's any comfort I am 53 and also thought that pineapples grew on trees...Grin

frogsoup · 08/01/2018 16:49

I did in fact know about pineapples, as I used to pass a pineapple plantation every day during my gap yah. But peanuts Shock - I'd assumed they grew on branches!
