That pineapples don't grow on trees, but grow in the ground? I'm well educated, went to university (twice), but I had never thought about where my pineapple had come from, and it never occurred to me that the 'chopped' end was on the bottom and not the top!

What didn't you know until recently?

I hope IN the ground was a typo...

BlueSapp · 08/01/2018 16:24

cashews and Brazil nuts are weird definitely never eating those again ugh!

Trills · 08/01/2018 16:25

Pate is nice. Liver is gross. There's nothing wrong with holding both these opinions at once.

ColonelJackONeil · 08/01/2018 16:26

I keep finding out about pineapples then forgetting again. My brain clearly thinks they should grow on trees.
I found out recently on MN that the state of Arkansas in the US is pronounced 'arkinsaw'.

SinceWhenDid · 08/01/2018 16:26

Do all cashews grow with scary faces!?

Ooh yes, bananas are berries, aren't they? But strawberries and raspberries aren't berries, because their seeds are on the outside.

You can do a cool trick with bananas. Get a needle and thread, and push it through from one side of a banana to another, then again to the next side and so on until you've gone around all the sides, then finally put the needle from the last side through the first hole, then pull the thread so you draw the thread through the banana flesh and out through that one hole. Repeat that several times down the length of the banana. When you peel the banana, it will be sliced.

I found out that the last time anyone walked on the moon was 40 - FORTY - years ago... seems an awfully long time.

Grunkalunka · 08/01/2018 16:29

I only know about pineapples because I saw an Elvis Presley film on TV when I was a kid set in Hawaii where he sings in a pineapple plantation!

BarbaraofSevillle · 08/01/2018 16:29

Peanuts aren't actually nuts.

Chowmum · 08/01/2018 16:30

Well, as hyenas are born almost fully developed - with teeth - something seems a little weird there Hmm I'm guessing hyenas are only children Grin

lougle · 08/01/2018 16:30

In the ground was an autocorrect, promise 😋

Having googled cashews I see that the seed case is highly poisonous but the toxin is destroyed by roasting. How did they find this out?

FreddieClaryHorshieLion · 08/01/2018 16:31

I've only recently found out Luxembourg is a country in its own right, I thought it was a Swiss city !

I find that entertaining. Probably because I’m from Switzerland ;)

But ‘we’ (well. Not the whole country but a rather well known bakery chain) do have Luxemburgerli, which are small macaroons...

FreddieClaryHorshieLion · 08/01/2018 16:31

*macarons.

mustbemad17 · 08/01/2018 16:32

Chowmum it definitely made me cringe! Totally the wrong fact to spout in order to impress a group of mum's with babies, put it that way!

I also didn't know that bears give birth in hibernation. I want to be a bear

lougle · 08/01/2018 16:32

Wait, Holland isn't a country?? Since when?

The clocks go back an hour for 5 months only (Nov to March). They go forward for 7 months (April to October).

The long summer days are just around the corner!

It used to be quite complicated though:

That the tags on Kickers represent port (left/red) / starboard (green/right).

GinisLife · 08/01/2018 16:34

I'm 57 and just found out about pineapples 😂😂😂. I guess if it was a quiz question I'd have guessed at ground grown rather than tree grown but not something you ever think about really. (And I consider myself reasonably intelligent lol)

Snowysky20009 · 08/01/2018 16:35

I've got to 37 and just found out about pineapples, various nuts and that a banana tree walks! (It's that age again....)

Charolais · 08/01/2018 16:37

What the hell do you people do all day long? The ignorance is astounding.

Strawberry is a "swollen receptacle" - it's the swollen tip of the stem (where the flower was attached), with the seeds on the outside. Raspberry and blackberry are clusters of drupes if I remember correctly - a drupe is a seed with a hard shell and a soft bit round the outside, like plum, almond, peach.

So, yeah, peanuts aren't nuts, but most "nuts" aren't nuts. Almond is a drupe, as are walnuts and pecans. Brazil nuts are seeds within a capsule. Hazelnuts are nuts, though.
