That pineapples don't grow on trees, but grow in the ground? I'm well educated, went to university (twice), but I had never thought about where my pineapple had come from, and it never occurred to me that the 'chopped' end was on the bottom and not the top!

What didn't you know until recently?

Went through the thread and didn’t see it mentioned, so here some more random facts: pineapple and kiwi have enzyme in fhem that destroys animal protein. So when you’re eating either of them, it eats you back.
That’s the reason why the jelly made with gelatine won’t set if it has fresh kiwi or pineapple in it. The enzyme destroys all properties in gelatine.
In case you didn’t know, gelatine comes from pigs.

Also, even though the pig’s orgasm lasts for 30 minutes, the only species that can enjoy sex in the same way as humans do, are dolphins.

Absolutely pointless fact: Moominpappa was adopted.

The daddy long legs spider (not to be mistaken for a crane fly) has a penis but spiders don't have one; they have some palps in their head where the sperm is. The palps can finish the job of reproduction without the male spider.

I haven't read all of the messages so i'm sorry if duplicating but bananas don't grow on trees they are PLANTS! xx

pineapple and kiwi have enzyme in fhem that destroys animal protein. So does papaya (papein) - you used to be able to buy it as a meat tenderiser

Female bed bugs don't have a vagina so the males have a penis that drills a hole in the female ShockConfused

Ow! Xmas Shock

mbajoras444 · 11/01/2018 13:24

That is completely normal. How are we supposed to know everything all the time. I actually learned this pineapple fact from you just now. I am not a biologist to know these things.

Not quite correct. Male spiders produce their sperm in an organ under the body. During mating they use the palps under the head to pick up the sperm and plant them into the female. So the male is there until the job is finished. He then usually makes a hasty retreat.

brizzledrizzle · 11/01/2018 13:52

The orb spider has detachable palps so if he's quick he can get away , scientists found that the palps can still be passing sperm over 20 minutes or so after he's been eaten or run away.

Lots of things do external fertilisation. Frogs, damselflies for example. Produce eggs, eject them, get them fertilised. put them somewhere safe to develop. Only reason to do it internally, it seems to me, is that you want to encase the egg into a tough shell (so need it fertilising before encapsulating it), or you want to hatch the thing inside you and incubate it.

Also, can't remember if it's cashews or brazil nuts but when they're being harvested you have to wear really thick gloves otherwise the oils will cause severe burns.

Cashews. I ate the fruit of a cashew once, bit the "nut" and burnt my face Blush

Also mango and citrus fruits will lighten your hair but also darken your skin when you go into the sun. Fresh picked bananas leak a juice that will stain your clothes really badly.

I have learned just now that Dalmatians puppies are born white and develop their spots after a few weeks.

andadietcoke

No judging, a couple of years ago I had a student who eat chicken but didn't know it was a bird.

Accidentally Did you never see 101 Dalmatians? Grin

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 12/01/2018 08:41

I must have done at some point but this fact has clearly leaked out of my ears at some point along my life!

TammySwansonTwo · 12/01/2018 08:56

I'm severely allergic to cashews - wonder if I'd be allergic to the cashew apple?

PerfectlySymmetricalButtocks · 12/01/2018 10:12

Accidentally my uncle and aunt have a Dalmatian/border collie/standard poodle cross. She's got white collie fur with grey spots underneath. Xmas Grin
