How long is acceptable to wear a dressing gown

How long is acceptable to wear a dressing gown between washes. Currently resisting washing my new Xmas one because over washing will make it lose its softness faster. So not to drip feed I probably wear it for about 7-8 hours a day during the week (shock horror). I literally live in itnoutside ofnworking hours. Am I gross [lighthearted]

Okay have skipped page 6 as desperate to ask - WHERE ARE YOU BUYING CHEAP NICE FLEECE (not towelling thanks) DRESSING GOWNS?!? We have moved to colder country and want the heating down...

I bought this from Sainsburys but in grey: tuclothing.sainsburys.co.uk/p/Printed-Dressing-Gown/132419225-Purple

Imagine spending all your time at home in some sort of get up that you were too embarrassed to open the front door in!

I am not embarrassed to open the front door in my pjs. Not for a second.

Sallystyle · 07/01/2018 00:31

I'm curious though, are you in a relationship? Does this mean your partner predominantly only sees you in your pyjamas and dressing gown? I'm not sure I'd find that attractive in a partner to be honest. Unless he /she does it too?

I am and yes, he mostly sees me in pjs. He is certainly attracted to me. My current pjs are nice lounge pants and a hoody from FatFace. I am not sure how that is less attractive than people wearing leggings and t-shirts. He gets to see me naked when I get into bed. He doesn't wear pjs ever.

Attraction or lack of, is certainly not an issue here.

Dh has a big fluffy dressing gown as well as me. I bought it him for Christmas and he wears it over the top of his loungewear. He gets changed out of his work clothes about the same time as the dc go to bed, an hour or so after coming home. Attraction, or lack of it, isn't an issue between us.

HuskyMcClusky · 07/01/2018 00:56

Why would someone be ashamed to open the door in it? People go to the shops in PJs, dressing gowns and even slippers where I live

Maybe this is the difference. I have literally never seen an adult at the shops in pjs or a dressing gown in my life. No way would I open my door in pjs.

I’d feel weird wearing nightwear around the house all the time. Like I was sick or depressed. Couldn’t care less what anyone else does, mind.

Gwenhwyfar · 07/01/2018 01:00

If someone disturbs me at home they can take me as I am, as long as I'm decent.

Sure, but The op specifically stated she was embarrassed to open the door due to being embarassed about how she was dressed...hence the responses to her.

On a seperare note I actually have seen someone out in their pyjamas and dressing gown. We were sitting waiting for a take away and two women walked past the parade of shops in their pyjamas and dressing gowns. They'd also been out for a takeaway. One of them was wearing a fluffy pink dressing gown with white stars on.

The interesting thing was I turned round as they walked past and looked at them, becayse well it's not every day you see someone walking about in their pjs, and one of the woman looked back at me, then she looked down and the look on her face was embarassement.

I've no idea why people deliberately put themselves in situations that embarass them. This was a very busy parade of shops. Early evening. Winter. And genuinely they looked ridiculous. Everyone looked at them, and some were laughing, but the rest just looked away in disgust.

You can get away with going out in your pjs,if you put a coat on, but if you put your very obvious dressing gown on, then from the reaction they got, you're just asking for derision.

This thread made me think of a dear ex-NDN, always to be found in her dressing gown, watering the front garden at 3.00.p.m., always with a glass of fizzy in her hand. Late 80s. What fabulous woman, and still going strong according to agog middle-aged types I know who've just moved into the neighbourhood. Smile

you're supposed to wash them ??Blush

I can't say I have found a dressing gown to be a particularly functional bit of clothing for daytime wear.
I only wear mine at the beginning of the day during showering, quick cup of coffee.

Dressing gowns have long wide sleeves, so get we, they trail and drip t if trying to do any wet housework, the garment is large and cumbersome, doesn't fasten well except for a cord around the waist, so rides up, needs re adjusting constantly.
It rides up when you sit down and restricts movement.
It feels like wearing a blanket and would hinder my day to day activity.

Sure it's warm, but I have many warm casual clothes that are far easier to wear than a dressing gown.

I just don't see it as very practical day garment.

SheGotOffThePlane · 07/01/2018 08:45

I have 4 but only wear 3 of them on rotation. The one I have on at this moment is going in the Washing later. I have a fresh one that hasn't been worn since it was washed last week and one that was fresh on yesterday.
They get washed maybe weekly, or bi weekly at a push.

speakout · 07/01/2018 08:55

Mine gets washed once a month.
But I wear it only 15 minutes a day.

Imustbemad00 · 07/01/2018 09:34

I’m single if it matters. But when I wasn’t I still used to wear pyjamas a lot, but my pyjamas were maybe slightly more attractive. Now I literally do not care.
I literally will be in pyjamas all day today. When I need to go out I will put some clothes on and then get changed back into pyjamas as soon as I get in again (repeat prices every time I need to go out)
Back to the original question though, I accidentally left my heating on all night so it’s quite warm. I think I may wash my dressing gown for the first time.

"You can get away with going out in your pjs,if you put a coat on, but if you put your very obvious dressing gown on, then from the reaction they got, you're just asking for derision."

It depends on the area. I live in a deprived area and it's quite normal here. Nobody would say anything. You wouldn't stare too long at anyone here anyway!

Bluntness100 · 07/01/2018 15:48

What really? There's loads of people out shopping in their dressing gowns where you live?

PissedOffNeighbour · 07/01/2018 15:50

Ha ha i have been shamed into washing my dressing gown today - first time in several years Blush

dontbesillyhenry · 07/01/2018 15:51

How are you able to wear a dressing gown for 8 hours a day? Do you not work/go out?

mookinsx · 07/01/2018 15:54

i wash mine when theres enough room in the load - which rarely happens
gross?
oh well

MuseumOfCurry · 07/01/2018 16:02

It's your home though so if you wish to dress in pyjamas and a dressing gown all the time go for it. I'm curious though, are you in a relationship? Does this mean your partner predominantly only sees you in your pyjamas and dressing gown? I'm not sure I'd find that attractive in a partner to be honest. Unless he /she does it too?

If I'm home, I'm in my cosies. Unfortunately, given the hideous cold, they've taken a sartorial hit. Normally, my version of cosies is a pair of leggings and a decomissioned cashmere jumper. Over the past month, I've actually been wearing several layers of thermals.

I doubt my husband loves it, but he still tries to have sex with me all the time.

Sweetpea55 · 07/01/2018 16:05

I'm amazed that someone needs advice on when to wash a dressing gown.. It's the same as any other article of clothing.. WHEN IT'S DIRTY.!!!!!

AmaraSas · 07/01/2018 16:07

Tend to wash mine once ketchup gets dropped down the front

Or a coffee spill

Frusso · 07/01/2018 16:53

* How are you able to wear a dressing gown for 8 hours a day? Do you not work/go out?*
I work nights. So 8.5hrs of dressing gown wearing time.

Even when days I'd have

1 hr in the morning, 7 after work. And that's factoring in a shop after work, and not counting weekends.

Can easily get 12hrs on a lazy Sunday.

Imustbemad00 · 07/01/2018 17:18

Hour or so before work, I get home at 4 so 4 until 10 or 11. Today I’m on 8 hours already lol.

My family call my dressing gown my ‘skin’ ... because I never take it off. I wash mine every 3 ish weeks unless it looks or smells manky.
