How long is acceptable to wear a dressing gown

How long is acceptable to wear a dressing gown between washes. Currently resisting washing my new Xmas one because over washing will make it lose its softness faster. So not to drip feed I probably wear it for about 7-8 hours a day during the week (shock horror). I literally live in itnoutside ofnworking hours. Am I gross [lighthearted]

Are people wearing dressing gowns over their clothes?

TotallyWingingIt · 05/01/2018 23:32

I do if I get chilly rather than put the heating on Notso. Usually over pjs though

Lifechallenges · 05/01/2018 23:33

Once a year as I only wear it briefly most days and with Pjs underneath!?!?!

Babababababybel23 · 05/01/2018 23:35

About once a month but I have about 4 and don't wear them very often

Maryann1975 · 05/01/2018 23:36

Are you meant to wash dressing gowns? Blush every days a school day.

PissedOffNeighbour · 05/01/2018 23:38

I think some people are confusing dressing gowns with house coats...

Carbohol78 · 05/01/2018 23:40

I have 2, a clean one for after my shower (it is towelling, so also acts as my towel), and a cozy one for first thing in the morning and at night, both weekly wash

Notso · 05/01/2018 23:41

Do you not have a cardy Totally?

TotallyWingingIt · 05/01/2018 23:44

Cardigans aren't as snuggly and warm. I don't do it as much in warmer weather though. Only when it's cold mostly

Ohmyfuck · 05/01/2018 23:45

Please wash it.

LegallyBrunet · 05/01/2018 23:46

I'm 100% certain my sister lives in her's so...

They're the same thing? Confused

cushioncovers · 05/01/2018 23:46

Worked on a hospital ward where we took patients down to theatre and then I brought their slippers and dressing gowns back to their bedside and all I can say is we do not wash our dressing gowns as often as we should, dear god they often smelt vile and don't get me started in the slippers 🤮🤮

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 05/01/2018 23:46

I don't believe people wear them to school and demand video evidence.

squishysquirmy · 05/01/2018 23:49

Once a week or every two weeks, depending on how much tea I have spilled down it (I'm a clumsy oaf).

I live in mine: Whenever I am in the house in the colder months*my dressing gown is on. Saves on heating and its soooo cosy, but I keep burning the sleeves on the gas hob Hmm.

paxillin · 05/01/2018 23:50

It needs a wash as soon as it tries to run away after you take it off.

Frusso · 05/01/2018 23:59

Also live in my dressing gown! Especially in the colder months, if I'm in the house I'm wearing it. Over pjs until I get dressed, then when I get chilly I put it on over my clothes. Never wear it naked, i.e. straight after a bath.
I've had it for a year, and its still it's so very soft and fluffy. Wash every 2-3 weeks except in summer when I wear it less, always use softener and tumble dry it.
The tie gets washed a lot more often (every 2-3days) as I have a similar habit to @ILoveMrDarcy and my makeup hands get wiped on it.

@PissedOffNeighbour I wear mine as a housecoat, but they are pretty much one and the same thing these days.
I do think at a dressing gown is not the same thing as a bath robe, they seem interchangeable too, but firmly believe they should be towelling. fluffy shouldn't get wet.

ScreamingValenta · 05/01/2018 23:59

Until it starts to smell or I drop something down it.

Llangollen · 06/01/2018 00:03

I can't stand dressing gowns, I really do not understand the attraction?

If you are wearing one 7-8 hours a day, I would say to wash it every couple of days, every week at the most. How often to you wash a jumper?

Gwenhwyfar · 06/01/2018 00:05

I only wash jumpers when they're visible dirty Llangollen as they don't touch my skin except perhaps a bit by the wrist. They don't get any sweat on them at all.
Why would you wash a dressing gown every few days if you're wearing PJs underneath.
I suppose the attraction is that they're warm and comfortable.

AlexaAmbidextra · 06/01/2018 00:07

Well I can't say I'm a clean freak but astonished at so many stinking dressing gowns. Shock. Why would anyone wear one for so long without chucking it in the wash?

Llangollen · 06/01/2018 00:11

They don't get any sweat on them at all

it's not just about the sweat though. We can't smell ourselves or our house. Why would I wash a dressing gown? because at the very least it will touch my neck, and people don't realise how dirty that can get. because I cook, because it simply doesn't feel clean not to.

I read a thread from a woman who sold a jumper on ebay without washing it, because it hadn't touched her skin so it was clean. Sounds disgusting, sorry

Notso · 06/01/2018 00:12

Same here Llangollen my daughter wears her full length thick fleece one most of the time. It's like living with the ghost of Christmas present.

brizzledrizzle · 06/01/2018 00:20

Never but then I only wear it for about two mins after getting out of the shower.
