How long is acceptable to wear a dressing gown

How long is acceptable to wear a dressing gown between washes. Currently resisting washing my new Xmas one because over washing will make it lose its softness faster. So not to drip feed I probably wear it for about 7-8 hours a day during the week (shock horror). I literally live in itnoutside ofnworking hours. Am I gross [lighthearted]

OP posts:
ohfortuna · 06/01/2018 00:39

sometimes when it's very cold I wear 3 at once, a lightweight jersey one, a hooded fleece one and then a big thick toweling one on top

ohfortuna · 06/01/2018 00:43

after all why spend money on heating when you could just layer up with dressing gowns :o

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 06/01/2018 00:47

Well, my ex only washed his about 3 times the whole time I knew him. He wore it at least an hour or two each day.

We were together 12 years. The stench of that thing was one of the many reasons

SparkyTheCat · 06/01/2018 00:48

I accidentally set mine on fire recently! So it's a bit crispy round the edges now. In answer to your question OP, once a month or do.

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 06/01/2018 00:48

But me? Whenever I wash towels of a similar colour. So every couple of weeks

IHaveACuntingPlan · 06/01/2018 01:29

I bought mine from sainsburys just before Xmas and like you I've been living in it over the hols. It's fleecy, it has owls on and it's lovely and soft. It's like wearing a hug all day long. It also saves a fortune in heating. I will admit to freshening it up with some Lush body powder Blush but it does need a wash. I suppose I'll put it in tomorrow, then I can hang it to dry and hope against hope it'll be wearable again by Sunday night!

ChocolateDoll · 06/01/2018 01:54

OMG.

Cannot believe anybody spends 7-8hours a day in their dressing gown! How do you manage that?!?!

paxillin · 06/01/2018 02:02

I imagine you just wear it whenever at home. I have an old over-sized cardigan for the same purpose.

SheRaaarghPrincessOfPower · 06/01/2018 02:05

Judgy fucker..

It's cold atm! Wearing nice warm fluffy house coats is environmentally friendly, so shh.

You just need another one, OP

monkeysox · 06/01/2018 05:31

I wear one in bed too.
It's warmer.
Have a few. Wash every week or so. (as over pj's)

bimbobaggins · 06/01/2018 05:40

Wow, you’re meant to wash them? Who knew! I usually just wear mine for a couple of years then it walks to the bin itself.

ForgotwhatIcameinherefor · 06/01/2018 05:43

I can still remember the exact smell of my Ddad’s dressing gown and I haven’t shared a home with him in over 30 years.

ElizaDontlittle · 06/01/2018 06:26

I have only ever worn mine in hospital or very occasionally if I stay at someone's house.
I have blankets on the sofa to put over me, and a few cardigans/hoodies that I wear if I'm cold after work. I love pyjamas though - frequently get home and change straight in to them!

DIngdongmerryilyonhigh · 06/01/2018 06:27

Once a week. Or if less than a week and it smells or has stuff spilt on it - I have a baby and a toddler.

IDismyname · 06/01/2018 07:45

I sleep in mine, over my PJs, in the winter. It's not a towelling one - just a brushed cotton one. On the back of this thread, you've reminded me to wash it. It's probably not been washed since November.

I would love love love to find a kind of modern day kaftan thingy that I could wear. I find the sleeves on my dressing gown are a complete hazard in the kitchen.

trinity0097 · 06/01/2018 08:05

About once a year for mine!

But it’s not ever worn next to my skin, I am always wearing PJs or leggings/t-shirt under.

kaytee87 · 06/01/2018 08:13

Maybe every 2 - 3 weeks. I don't wear it during the day unless Ill.

Bluntness100 · 06/01/2018 08:18

bluntness but what do you wear when you get out of bed? Do you get dressed straight away?

Generally I sleep in shorts and vest and just shove a hoodie on when I get up and go downstairs. If it's cold I might shove my leggings on.

When I have a shower I get dressed straight after. When I come in from work I change into my "house clothes". Which is generally said leggings and a jumper in winter.

My husband doesn't have one either. He gets up, shoves his jeans and t shirt on then will change when he has a shower..

I did have one years ago and binned it eventually as I never wore it.

Still surprised, people, wear them so much [ confused]

BuggerLumpsAnnoyed · 06/01/2018 08:24

I washed my new Christmas one Thursday. I am living in it it's the nicest dressing gown I've ever had!i washed it first thing in the morning, DH started work later than me so was under strict instructions to take it straight to DMs on the way to work to be tumble dried so it was ready for my return in the evening!

Sgtmajormummy · 06/01/2018 08:52

DD loves hers and has worn it half the time these holidays. It's a fleecy one which seems to attract grime (mucky pup!) so about once a fortnight.
Mine is a good oldfashioned tartan one which I wear for about half an hour at breakfast time in Autumn/Winter. Every two months and when I put it away.
If I'm cold in the house during the day I have a sheepskin waistcoat (so cosy and seems to be self-regulating) which has seen better days. It was a charity shop buy, so not worth dry cleaning. I'll say farewell at the end of this Winter after 4(?) years.

turbohamster · 06/01/2018 09:07

I reckon the cost of multiple dressing gowns plus the cost of washing them is probably more expensive than sticking the heating on.

monkeysox · 06/01/2018 09:19

Who said heating wasn't on?!
Just not on overnight

turbohamster · 06/01/2018 09:25

after all why spend money on heating when you could just layer up with dressing gowns

It also saves a fortune in heating

Llangollen · 06/01/2018 09:26

I am bit confused about saving on heating. You could also wear jumpers? If people are happy with them, good for them, but they seem so unpractical, I find them uncomfortable, unsexy and feel like an hospital patient. If they are unwashed as well Shock

I accidentally set mine on fire recently! Grin GrinGrin
they do sound like a hazard too

thelastredwinegum · 06/01/2018 09:39

Try to do it once a week, if I'm in the house I try to be in my pyjamas & dressing gown.
