How long is acceptable to wear a dressing gown

How long is acceptable to wear a dressing gown between washes. Currently resisting washing my new Xmas one because over washing will make it lose its softness faster. So not to drip feed I probably wear it for about 7-8 hours a day during the week (shock horror). I literally live in itnoutside ofnworking hours. Am I gross [lighthearted]

I think the person who a few months ago wanted to champion house coats had a better idea. Or jumpers.

happymumof4crazykids · 06/01/2018 09:43

Every week at least! I wear mine for a few hours a week and wash it every week! Loads of softener and dry it in the tumble dryer. It comes out lovely and soft and fluffy! I've had mine for 4 years now and it's still lovely!

liz70 · 06/01/2018 09:44

I wash both bathrobes (cotton towelling robes for putting on straight after shower or bath, to dry oneself), and fluffy chenille dressing gowns (worn over pyjamas or nightdresses) weekly at 60°. I have two of each type. They hang on a coat hanger on a door to dry while I'm wearing the other.

Llangollen · 06/01/2018 09:46

if I'm in the house I try to be in my pyjamas & dressing gown.

genuine question: do you really clean. tidy, cook, take the bins out etc in your pyjamas? Do you change for clean pyjamas before going to bed?
I don't really have uncomfortable clothes, but I do wear casual ones at home, I just don't get the attraction for pyjamas (my kids do, and they are not impressed when told to get dressed Grin )

mishfish · 06/01/2018 09:47

I’d love it to be acceptable to wear a dressing gown in an office

anothernetter · 06/01/2018 09:50

I've normally got several in the go at any one time. My DH lives in his

liz70 · 06/01/2018 09:52

I only wear my dressing gowns over pyjamas or nightdresses. Once I'm dressed I wear cardigans over clothes. Still have the heating on or I wouldn't be able to feel my hands.

This thread talks about dressing gown v housecoat:

IsaSchmisa · 06/01/2018 10:01

I generally wash mine when I notice there's marmite on it.

wrenika · 06/01/2018 10:01

I think I've only washed my dressing gown once in a year and that was because I spilled something down it! They never seem to smell...well, mine doesn't!

Imustbemad00 · 06/01/2018 10:08

Great replies. 8 hours consists of an hour and a half in the morning, and then I put it straight on after work usually with pj’s underneath. It’s not smelling yet so I guess I’m ok for a while 🙂

To the person who has 8. Where do you keep them all??
My addiction to dressing gowns does cause problems. I literally hate wearing jeans, restrictive clothes etc and as soon as I walk through the door I take them off and put night clothes and dressing gown on. Therefore anytime anybody knocks at my door, for example, 5pm on a weekday or 2pm on a weekend I ignore the door as I’m embarrassed to open it.
I thought my old one was still soft until I got this new one. New one is light grey and white, starting to look a bit off colour I suppose. 😂

I don't own one. My mum is obsessed with them, has about five different ones and that has really turned me off them. So no dressing gowns in this house. I stick a hoodie over my pyjamas when I get up and get dressed straight after a shower.

I always think dressing gowns are a bit grubby and this thread has confirmed it. Grin

Fekko · 06/01/2018 10:32

I have 2. The one I slip on when I get up and the towelling one after a bath. They get washed when needed...

squishysquirmy · 06/01/2018 10:35

Its not really a hassle to wash them though is it?
And I really don't think the "extra cost of washing" comes anything close to having the heating on enough to keep the house really toasty, as a pp suggested.

You just shove them in the machine on a normal wash with some other stuff. Mine dry fairly quickly too.

I have 2 - one that is super soft and quite warm, and another which is super warm (thick fleece lined with furry fleece). The super warm one is warmer than my outside coat! I live in NE Scotland and I can't afford to have the heating on all day.

Leggings, yoga pants, jumpers, hoodie. Lots of acceptable lounge day wear that isn't restrictive.

I think you're wearing your, pyjamas and dressing gown as lounge wear for some reason. I can't imagine putting my pyjamas and dressing gown on at five o clock and making dinner in them. 😱

squishysquirmy · 06/01/2018 10:49

"Leggings, yoga pants, jumpers, hoodie. Lots of acceptable lounge day wear that isn't restrictive"

....And dressing gowns and pjs, which also happen to be perfectly acceptable lounge wear within the comfort of one's own home. Grin

HuskyMcClusky · 06/01/2018 10:49

I haven’t owned a dressing gown since I was a child.

And I don’t put on whatever I’m wearing to bed until just before bedtime.

It’s a whole new world! Shock

Gwenhwyfar · 06/01/2018 10:56

""Leggings, yoga pants, jumpers, hoodie"

That's what most of my PJs look like so why not just wear my PJs?

liz70 · 06/01/2018 11:02

"I always think dressing gowns are a bit grubby and this thread has confirmed it"

They're only grubby if people don't wash them regularly, which is their minging own choice. As I said, weekly hot wash for mine.

Gwenhwyfar · 06/01/2018 11:33

liz70 - things that don't touch sweaty parts of the skin don't need to be washed often. It's not grubby to not wash your coat, is it?

Sallystyle · 06/01/2018 12:06

I think you're wearing your, pyjamas and dressing gown as lounge wear for some reason. I can't imagine putting my pyjamas and dressing gown on at five o clock and making dinner in them.

My pyjamas go on the second I get home from being out. I often do the school run, change into my pjs and if I go out again I put my clothes back on.

I hate restrictive clothing and whilst I could wear leggings etc I prefer my pjs. I don't sleep in them as I sleep naked, so they are basically lounge wear anyway.

paxillin · 06/01/2018 13:31

Are people trying to police what others wear at home? Go on, live in your Wonder Woman costume, team it up with wellies and a Garfield-print dressing gown. Extra points if you do the school run in them and full marks if posting a picture on MN.

NancyDonahue · 06/01/2018 14:14

I love my dressing gowns Grin. I have fleece ones. One thin, one thick.

I usually put the thick on one in the mornings as I get up before the heating goes on, and the thin one in the evenings after showering. Always pjs underneath. Both get a weekly wash but as they're fleece it's just a quick warm wash and hang to dry.
