How long is acceptable to wear a dressing gown

How long is acceptable to wear a dressing gown between washes. Currently resisting washing my new Xmas one because over washing will make it lose its softness faster. So not to drip feed I probably wear it for about 7-8 hours a day during the week (shock horror). I literally live in itnoutside ofnworking hours. Am I gross [lighthearted]

When it smells. Not often though, I don't wear it that often. It's a massive, full length velvety thing so only worn in the winter really.

Ollycat · 05/01/2018 23:01

People go to the local carvery in them round here for roast dinner...guessing they get washed as and when required

Seriously??? Why would they do that??

I wear mine for about half an hour in the morning after I’ve showered and before I’ve dressed.

Those who wear them all the time at home do you put them on over your clothes when you get in?

givemesteel · 05/01/2018 23:03

This is a revelation, do some people just wear a dressing gown whenever they're in the house then?

Is this in the morning until you get dressed, or do you come in and put it on after being out? Over clothes or do you change into pyjamas first?

Just in winter or all year round?

I ask as my dressing gown is purely used for that 5 minute period between drying yourself after a bath or shower and getting dressed, only in winter if it's a bit chilly. Only have one which is old. Only washed maybe 3 times a year.

KenDoddsDadsDogIsDead · 05/01/2018 23:06

Ollycat they get worn to the shops, on the school run too. I know people who have a ' best' one which gets only worn outdoors for such occasions.

Neverender · 05/01/2018 23:07

Get up = dressing gown on
Kettle on, in shower
Off to work

Get in and get changed = dressing gown on until bed

UterusUterusGhali · 05/01/2018 23:08

I don't own a dressing gown...
I have a flimsy satin robe that's too small and useless so I don't wear it.

Am I missing a trick...?

Neverender · 05/01/2018 23:08

Weekends it's a whole different ballgame. Stays on for ages!

Grilledaubergines · 05/01/2018 23:08

OP, are you Dr Foster? Do you have your DH's bollocks in a vice-like grip and do you have a snarly disfunctional son?

The woman over the road, she's always got a glass of wine on the go. Pop over.

Grilledaubergines · 05/01/2018 23:09

Whoops, wrong thread!

Neverender · 05/01/2018 23:09

Yes Uterus - you need a massive fluffy one with wizardy sleeves! Satin gumpf doesn't cut it for winteeeeer!

HermionesRightHook · 05/01/2018 23:11

As soon as I notice a crusty bit.

Which is quite regularly.

FucksBizz · 05/01/2018 23:12

I put mine on over normal clothes if I'm cold, at weekends I wear it over PJs

Ollycat · 05/01/2018 23:14

KenDoddsDadsDogIsDead but why do they do it? Sounds very strange- do they have them on over PJ’s? I’ve never seen anyone out and about in one.

donajimena · 05/01/2018 23:15

I wasn't going to say when it starts to smell but I see a few brave souls have fessed up Blush
I never wear it when I'm in the buff though.

Gwenhwyfar · 05/01/2018 23:15

If you wear it over other things you only need to wash it if it becomes visibly dirty.
If you wear it with nothing underneath, just smell it.

InBlackwaterWoods · 05/01/2018 23:18

I've found my people! I live in my dressing gown! Feckin love it, I wear mine as soon as I'm up and as soon as I get in from work!
Yes, I do put it on over my clothes-keeps me cosy until the heating comes on!
I wash it once it starts to smell/has too much chocolate/egg/grub down it. Swap it with another one, wash them in rotation maybe every two weeks.
Dressing gowns are life! My DH despairs, but before my dog died, I was a regular trotting round the block in my goonie and wellies with her at night! Grin

Onlyoldontheoutside · 05/01/2018 23:18

Washed usually when the sleeve ends get dipped in something like peanut butter or tea dripped down the front.
Normally wear mine for a few months back in the morning weekdays while brushing teeth or in the late evening if I get restless leg.Weekends all morning or earlier if I have to go out.

FluffyWuffy100 · 05/01/2018 23:23

Depends on how clean your skin or clothes are underneath!

Mine doesn’t get washed v often.

apostropheuse · 05/01/2018 23:24

I only wear a dressing gown to walk five steps from my bedroom into the bathroom before my shower ... and the return journey of course. It remains remarkably clean.

BigApple11 · 05/01/2018 23:24

I don't even own one!

Blush
KenDoddsDadsDogIsDead · 05/01/2018 23:25

They wear them over PJs Ollycat. Not my thing and I dont get why either, but its commonplace here.

user1494670108 · 05/01/2018 23:26

I only wear it once a month! Wash it less than yearly I reckon

Ruffian · 05/01/2018 23:28

When you find it in the kitchen making its own toast it's time to wash it.

Sallystyle · 05/01/2018 23:29

Not very often but I need to wash mine tomorrow as the white sleeves are getting grey.

TotallyWingingIt · 05/01/2018 23:30

I'm so happy to hear I'm not the only one that lives in my dressing gown when I'm home! I adore mine. Wash it every week or so because the cuffs always get grubby or I spill food on it
