To hate the dog

We have a 10 week old puppy . I am 8 weeks pregnant with the most horrendous morning day and night sickness and my sense of smell through the roof.
The dog is NOT house trained and seems to be going backwards rather than improving. He is shitting and pissing EVERYWHERE. Pooing in his own bed. Eating his own poo. Vomiting his poo up. Weeing in his own bed. His bed is washed multiple times a day, new beds have been bought.
I can't cope . I am crying everyday with it all it's disgusting. I dread waking up in the morning feeling sick, being sick and then cleaning up all the piss and shit he's left all over the kitchen floor . I can't stand him being near me . I'm at a complete loss st what to do but I'm absolutely miserable and hate living in my house with him. Please help Sad

Can I just say it's no good bullying the OP.

A mistake has been made - by both her and her partner. The deed is done and she can't go back in time. She can't help her physical reaction to the dog's bodily functions - however she CAN make her life and the dog's life much better by biting the bullet and re-homing him.

The dog is unhappy, the OP is unhappy - it is the work of a moment and a phone call to a BREED RESCUE - NOT GUMTREE ETC to improve the quality of BOTH their lives.

Please do it OP. For all of your sakes.

You’ll need to put a lot of time and effort for the first year for a puppy’s life to make sure they are trained and they have good recall. After a year it gets easier. If your DH can’t step up for the year - walking, training, toilet training, socialisation, keeping it from being bored and chewing your house up etc then ask him who is....
If you don’t get it right now, then you won’t be able to handle a puppy and a baby. I know I’m ignoring the sickness but looking down the line you’re just going to have a ruined puppy, a baby and probably a sulky DH who won’t want the ruined dog then.

OP's last update said: Dp will be home soon , hes out from 7 - 7. So will speak to him properly soon I've been crying all day over it so hopefully he sees sense

I hope you got on ok last night OP. Please let us know. This situation is solvable Flowers

THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULDN'T BUY UN-TRAINED PUPPIES.

If you want a pet (WHICH THEY POO AND WEE JUST LIKE A BABY). Then ADOPT an older dog.

Don't take any of your hatred out on it, put some effort into training him NICELY. I've had (ex) friends who hit their dog to try and train them which stresses the dog out more.

Poor pup.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 03/01/2018 09:06

Have you read the thread Margaritaanyone89?

mydogisthebest · 03/01/2018 14:20

ellephant, crate training should never ever be painful for owner or dog. You never make the dog stay in the crate if it doesn't want to. You gradually get them used to the crate i.e. leaving the door open and popping the odd treat inside. Gradually the dog gets used to the crate.

Some posters seem to have no idea about dogs. Ridiculous when you can get all the information you need on the web

SchadenfreudePersonified · 03/01/2018 16:42

What mydog says - the objector the exercise is to let the dog realise that the crate is its own personal space - somewhere it can retreat if family life is getting on top of it, the kids are getting on its wick, it just feels under the weather, or just wants a kip in peace.

It serves to keep a puppy safe during the chewing everything stage, when the dog could destroy expensive stuff, or (WORSE!) swallow harmful objects or gnaw through a wire and electrocute itself.

It is NOT somewhere to cage your dog, or leave him locked up for hours and hours. You may shut the dog in for an hour while you go to the shops, but you open the door and let him out for a wee and a cuddle as soon as you come back, and leave him out - the choice to go into the crate is the dog's.

As owner, it is YOUR responsibility to teach, socialise and show the dog how to be part of the family.

Too many dogs spend too many hours trapped in too small cages.

It's cruel. Always get the biggest cage / indoor kennel you can accommodate, and NEVER use a kennel in which the dog cannot stand or sit, or lie at full stretch. They are a tool, not a punishment.

Valerrie · 03/01/2018 16:48

Always get the biggest cage

Sorry, that's not right. If you get a big crate, a puppy will soil in it, defeating the object of crate training. A crate should be big enough for the puppy to turn around a comfortably lie down in, but no bigger. I've seen people buy enormous crates for tiny puppies and wondering why they toilet in it.

By all means buy a huge crate if your adult dog is going to be huge, but until the puppy is grown, you'll need to section off enough to discourage the dog from using it as a toilet.

Uncalled for Fluffy

BigFatGoalie · 03/01/2018 17:05

fluffy , Don’t worry.
It’s almost the end of the holidays, you can get back to school soon.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 03/01/2018 17:06

Well it's pretty dumb to comment on a thread that you blatantly haven't read Fluffy. But there you go.

Wolfiefan · 03/01/2018 17:44

@Vallerie
A small cage won't guarantee a dog doesn't mess it. What will toilet train a dog is the owner being by it and taking it out after eating and drinking and playing and napping and every 30 minutes or so as well. Praise when it does go.
My dog had a big crate. She never messed in it because she wasn't left to do so.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 03/01/2018 18:37

Valerrie

In my experience, a large cage gives a small puppy roofer a toilet area. A young puppy cannot physically control their bladder/ bowels for 6+ hours overnight. If s/he is in a cage with only room fr their bed, sooner or later (probably sooner) they will be forced to soil in it, and then they end up soaked in wee and covered with poo.

Frequent "takings-out" during the day will quickly house train most puppies when there is someone who can respond o his/her needs, but overnight there is rarely anyone available to take them out.

We'll have to agree to differ on this one Smile

SchadenfreudePersonified · 03/01/2018 18:37

*room for, not roofer
