AIBU to think they were rude about my social faux pas?

We - MIL, FIL, DP, two DDs and me - went to a restaurant for lunch where they serve veggies for a starter as part of a set meal for kids. My girls don't eat them, so normally my DP and I do. On this particular day, I was heavily pregnant, very tired and very hungry. When the kids' starters were served (us grown ups hadn't ordered starters), I took the veggies off my younger daughter's plate and tucked in without thought. I was feeling weak, but trying to hide it, so nothing was on my mind except for feeding myself in that initial second. My MIL was sitting across from me while my DP and FIL were on the other end of the table opposite each other. My DP looks at me and nearly shouts at me 'Are you going to eat that' or something similar. And my FIL looks at me with these dagger eyes like I had knocked someone over to shove food in my mouth. I couldn't bear to look at my MIL, but no doubt she had the same look. I just froze. I don't think I even responded. I had clearly committed a fatal error of not sharing with my MIL, while DP and FIL shared my elder daughter's portion of veggies. FIL made a big deal of giving their bit to MIL. I felt mortified. They made me feel so embarrassed. There were additional looks and sarcastic comments during the meal as well. Now, AIBU at thinking this is ridiculous? I was a heavily pregnant, hungry woman who acted out of habit (when ILs are not there). If given a chance, I would have noticed two seconds into eating that I hadn't shared, laughed at my faux pas and apologised. And I think any other person (please do let me know your brutally honest MN thoughts on this too) would have laughed back - thought nothing of it - and turned down any offer, given I was a hungry pregnant woman taking food off my own daughter's plate in a meal we were paying for. Now I am breastfeeding, I am expecting the situation to arise again (or rather hear some reference to the previous occasion). What do I do then?

Why the fuck would the GPs think they should be entitled to, or want, a few bits of salad from the kids plate?!
Next time DH shouts at you about whether you're going to eat something, holler back with your mouth full, 'I already am! Yum yum! Now don't be tight, order your parents a proper starter, before they try and take mine!' if they want to give daggers, you should at least do something which warrants it.

This is just weird. Husband nearly shouting, ILs glaring, still sniping ages later... over a bit of carrot? They are the ones who are rude, not you.

Write down on a piece of paper "I predict you are all going to keep sniping over a bit of carrot" and put in a sealed envelope. Produce envelope and give to the sniper when they start. :)

If it is pizza express it’s only tomato halves, cucumber and red pepper at ours - probably 8 slices in all of all items combined

I dont think you did anything wrong, i wouldnt have expected half of your dd veggies.

Bluntness100 · 30/12/2017 21:17

I just find it strange you were all basically fighting over some veggies.

Why didn't you order a starter if you were all that hungry that you were diving on your kids food? Or if you couldn't afford it Eat something before you came out so you weren't so hungry?

Honestly, all sharing out thr kids starters like you hadn't seen food for a month. I feel embarrassed for all of you.

Aroundtheworldandback · 30/12/2017 21:20

Why didn’t you just order enough food for everyone?

RaindropsAndSparkles · 30/12/2017 21:28

It sounds weird. Where was the conversation about the DC getting starters they wouldn't eat and did anyone else want a starter?

To be perfectly honest I do think it was a bit off to just grab your dd's food. If you were that hungry why didn't you order a cpl of sharing platters/garlic bread/olives for everyone.

Amoregentlemanlikemanner · 30/12/2017 21:28

Pizza Express WBU.
Everyone knows that only the kids get starters otherwise it would be too expensive. They should offer "extra kids starters" to the pregnant.

Mind you there might have been a dough balls issue then.

biscuitmillionaire · 30/12/2017 21:37

They're uptight, you're paranoid.
No big drama. Forget about it.

That's fair enough, if they couldn't afford starters, but they should have eaten a little something before they went, to be falling out over sharing the kids veggies becayse they are all so hungry is crazy behaviour. Or even ordered some dough balls and cheaper mains, or less drinks, anything so they all behaved like reasonable adults.

WellThisIsShit · 31/12/2017 00:06

I think it’s horrid to behave like your dh and in laws did to you. I also think it’s really sad that you’re worrying about them bringing it up. It’s really sad it’s on your mind and shows that this is how they generallly behave. Poor you. I’d try and ignore the in laws and focus on why dh felt he could treat you like that. Hopefully all just a storm in a tea cup Flowers

Ps you can’t stop the thread comments in the same way you can on Facebook, when you have enough to look at. it doesn’t work like that here. Just ignore if the thread keeps on going, they do fizzle out in the end!

Coconutspongexo · 31/12/2017 07:56

Hangry

Bodicea · 31/12/2017 08:10

Its pizza express right? I always eat my kids veggie starters. It wouldn’t occur to me to share with my in laws or anyone else. They are v odd!

lastnamefirstfirstnamelast · 31/12/2017 08:24

Odd how utterly.

Who on earth gets so hyped up on sharing a few slices of cucumber and a tomato..

I could maybe understand if you grabbed a bottle of wine on the table and poured a massive glass for yourself.

Considering the tragic, henious events that have occurred this year, you all need to get a friggin grip.

nolongersurprised · 31/12/2017 09:23

I was insanely hungry during my pregnancies. I remember DH cooked a chicken after a long day at work and I came home and ate it, standing up, from the chicken.

Your DH and PIL sound very precious over a few scrappy vege bits. What did they expect, for you to hand them around offering your MIL the BEST bit of sliced cucumber?
